Wealthy Nigerians spent over $390 million on property in London over the last 3 years according to new research. They are the biggest spenders out of the whole Africa - who, as a continent, spent over $938 million.
"The most expensive property we've ever sold to a Nigerian is actually a transaction we're in the middle of working on at the moment," says Camilla Dell, from Black Brick Property Solutions. "It's a property in the region of £50million (or $78million)."
While buyers from Africa account for only 1.5% of transactions in the "ultra-prime" London property market, they make up 5% of sales by value - which is up from 2%. And this is by spending between £15million and £25million on each home.
"I would like to buy in Mayfair," says one Nigerian lady. "But unfortunately, I cannot afford to live there."
The most sought after areas for Nigerians, in particular, in London are around Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Belgravia. Buyers include Africa's richest man - Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian businessman who has an estimated fortune of £16billion.
And the world's richest woman - Folorunsho Alakija, is an oil tycoon, fashion designer and philanthropist based in Lagos, but is also a big investor in the London. She recently bought four apartments in One Hyde Park, the super-exclusive development in Knightsbridge.
"They're running banks, oil and gas companies, telecomms companies and over the last ten or fifteen years have made a lot of money," explains Camilla Dell.
But many Nigerians are suspicious of such large amounts of money being spent on such lavish property, outside of Nigeria.
"You have to ask - where do they get the money from? Was it stolen money, because if you steal money from government or wherever - you want to live big," says one man.
"Those places are for big, even bigger girls!" laughs one lady who cannot afford such property in London.

I couldn't imagine living there and don't get what all the hype is about! It's boring, cold, gray, rainy, expensive and the ppl there are rude and smoke 2 much! Houses and flats hardly have a front yard or grass u can actually walk on with out sinking in2 the mud! London is so over rated! I'm sure £50,000 can go a lot further in Nigeria and put 2 better use.

It doesn't reflex on the populous so how is Nigeria rich? Maybe rich in resources but to convert that to wealth is a huge debate.Money isn't wealth,money runs out but with wealth,you can create it,pass it down to generations yet unborn. How could Nigeria be so rich and its passport is the lest desire at any embassy or high commission? How could Nigeria be so rich and feeding and welfare is a struggle. How could it be rich and the educational system is rehearsed blunder, practiced over time.How could Nigeria be so rich and unemployment is touching the heavens.....with a 65% rate for graduates. How can a country be so rich they can't refine it crude and natural gases,given to them by God freely.How can a country be so rich and in 2015 electricity is luxury,basic things have eluded it citizens.How can a country be so rich and it citizens are fleeing in large proportion en mass daily to countries that are even way worst or same.There are Nigerians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, India, Greece, Cape Verde and a few Caribbean countries.Answer me good fellow,which child of a rich nation flees from a rich nation?

Nigerians I meet living in the UK are very patriotic people but one thing they all agree is that corruption is rotting Nigeria. It's sad that the whole, imperialistic, colonial, "I've got mine (by any means necessary) so SCREW you!" classicism mentality has infected so many indigenous societies where life was once far more communal and connected. So many indigenous societies adopted some very callous, sociopathic attitudes from colonials all the name of Western ambition. While there were beneficial things to learn from them, not everything they had to teach was virtuous or enlightened. Many of our ancestral ways were far more enlightened than theirs. Tribal and village life used to be dependent on a greater sense of taking care of each other as a means to the entire society thriving. No such things as orphans and vagrants and homeless. There were 'Haves" and "Have More" never "Have Nots". The very idea of someone lavishing in exorbitant wealth while their own people starved would have been an atrocious and foreign concept to our ancestors. Whether you come from an African, Amazonian, Amerindian, Native American, Polynesian tribe, THIS classism thing, is NOT us.

MsProdigy1985 Same. I'm also West Indian. I lived in London for 2yrs for university. Could never imagine living there. Way too expensive and too bleak. The buildings in most parts of the city (outside the wealthy enclaves) were dreary and old ( which Europeans laughably classify as charming and historical). I remember I was at a restaurant in Soho and asked for the restroom. They directed me to a damp and dark stairwell that appeared to descend into the bowels of hell. I didn't even bother.

Well! many did and live to regret it. Others were not so lucky, they lost their lives. When IBB and OBJ were in power many Nigerians in the diaspora thought things were moving in right directions. They were excited and made decisions to go back home with their life savings and skills to contribute to the development of the Country. Those excitements were shortlived. They were broken by the system, lost everything. Those able to leave with their lives packed their bags, board the next plane back to the country they migrated from to lick their wounds and start all over again. Those people vowed never to do it again. "Once bitten twice shy"

It is a true disgrace that while countries like Norway use their oil money towards improving the lives of their own people, other countries like Nigeria use all their incredible wealth on a few rich while the rest have the worst living conditions imaginable. +Deborah X U are very right and people ALWAYS seem to think that America is such a great place...Don't get me wrong, I am thankful to be an American especially when I turn on the news and see the unrest in so many places...But sometimes living in the "land of plenty" can also backfire and become a curse...I want simplicity, peace, love, happiness and equality for ALL...Sadly, the state of America seems to continually exclude African Americans and they try to justify it...There is a saying that sometimes LESS IS MORE, if we moved to Nigeria we would definitely lose some of the accommodations that I'm accustomed to in America, but we'd also gain so much in the sense of self, family, character and personal strength...

It is what we do for ourselves and NOT what we expect others to do for us that is going to decide the fate of Afrika. Wealthy Nigerian should be more pragmatic in how they spend their money rather than exporting precious foreign exchange from Nigeria to buy penthouses in Britian to satisfy their egos. There focus should be on developing Nigeria to be a First world country like Singapore. When they invest outside of Nigeria it should be in assets that will generate profits that can be repatriated back to their country to grow the economy of Nigeria. How many of these wealthy Nigerians are prepared to make investments in important Fortune 500 corporations rather than in bricks and stones that doesn't generate any wealth for them. "Mind is the thing that rules and the black man to-day falls below the white man only because of the POVERTY of his mind"(Marcus Garvey). When Afrikans at home begin to see the bigger picture(i.e developing Africa to become a Super-Power) Afrika will continue to be nothing more than an extraction site for its natural resources. Singapore has shown the rest of the Thirld world what committed AND Visionary leadership can accomplish. Is it any surprise that the only country on the continent of Afrika that have succeeded in having a developed economy occurred under white leadership(i.e South Afrika). Are these wealthy Nigerians for Afrika or for themselves????? It was the myopic mentality of many of the Afrikan leaders during the 15th century that set the stage for the European conquest of Afrika. Have these wealthy Nigerians not learn any lessons from the assassination of Col. Gadaffi and other Afrikan leaders before him, that a weak Afrika will always be vulnerable to attack from the West(America and its European allies).
@Mimi-nr6jx
@Mimi-nr6jx 8 лет назад
To be honest, private entities develop an economy more than the government. If they spend that money on companies in the continent, they employ people and ofcourse you know that raises sources of income. Also, their "affluence" attracts investment which boosts an economy

I don't see anything bad in having properties outside your country if you can afford it "CLEANLY", it's more like an investment if i must say. I have friends who live in their parents house and as such they don't have to pay monthly rents like most of us, that's saving cost. People also buy houses and give it out on rent and they'll surely recoup more than they bought the house @ the end of the day. All these houses can also be sold at the end of the day if there is a need for it. A regular visitor to a foreign country can decide to have his own house for convenience.
@lunayen
@lunayen 9 лет назад
(Late reply) Nothing wrong with buying up condos in foreign countries, but to spend all your money in another country while your own suffers is very sad. These wealthy Nigerians have the means to CHANGE their country by investing in businesses, creating new connections to Western and Eastern countries and SELL their own products, but they don't even try. They can safeguard raw materials, create schools where students can learn trades to improve their country, hospitals where the locals can get adequate care, students can get education and researchers can invent new cures for diseases. Things that are worth 10000x more valuable than lousy condo in London. Every other country uses their fortune to help their own. Why can't these millionaires and billionaires do the same for Nigeria?

Midy Olumide You've got no ideas about real estates. They push such houses unto the newest thief, knowing that they are mumus and slobs. They think once they buy houses in England, they will automatically make profits. But, how do they end up? They loose them, as the same sellers manipulate them through fake forecasts and projections that bring the same property down the slope. And mind you, there's zero mercy when the tax man comes knocking. And so, at the end of the day, the property returns to the sellers. These houses are never yours in the first place, and so they'd got to return to the original owners? What were you thinking? That the properties can be yours for keep? You're kidding yourself like a real three year old.

This is sad! Documentary on material things. Nothing wrong with having nice things but your putting money in the pocket of the wealthy just so you can say I live here!! Material things will not make you happy. Use your head people and help the ones in your country. Build up your country. Create jobs in your country!!!!

"Internalised racism and inferiority complex" and to top it... Unpatriotic and elitistism. That's the wealthy Nigerians.... You wonder where the source of the financing coming... No Nigerian or African earn that amount of investment perhaps their lifetime.

Rich people always will try and protect their money and there is nothing wrong with anybody buying a property abroad for investment or otherwise. The cogent issue of stolen money has to rely on us the nigerian public, we should be learn to speak up for what is right, so if you see a political thief/thug on the street of london. Call him/her a theif.

you are correct. But the truth is if the money Nigeria earned from the oil since 1970 till today was invested properly in the countries infrastructure which would have produced other industries Nigeria would have been a major economic force today. At least become an alternative manufacturing economy that is very productive. which will be good for Nigerians and Africans globally in the long run. If the political thieves and their friends keep stealing the seed one day they will have no harvest and a land of chaos that will eventually affect their children no matter how much they think they have stored up for themselves .

If you steal money, you're not going to splurge where you stole it from. You're gonna spend it where it is untraceable. Not saying that's the case for this particular issue.

Not everyone is a thief! some people genuinely work for their money, give to the poor and to God but some/most just steal money, come abroad and buy houses everywhere! the latter needs to be checked cause they'll steal nigeria's money and be buying houses in the most expensive areas abroad, which is annoying to me. But minus them, those who work for their money, work for it so don't start dictating what they should do with it, if you had their kind of money, would you every month carry your salary to create new roads? attack the politicians, if anything they are the ones that should do all those things!

They can't take you round their houses because obviously most (surely not all) acquired it through fraudulent means. Personally if I am in such position I will do it gladly with intent of passing a message across and inspire other young Nigerians that you can live your dreams without taking what does not belong to you. Except that I am a very private person but I will still do it all the same because of the message I want to pass across. So far my name is not stated.

Would I buy a property in London? Hell TO THE NO... The UK economy is headed for a BIG CRASH pretty soon due to the amount of borrowing in the system (Watch the end of britain video). Buying up land and developing it in Nigeria is a better option as the economic trajectory for the country means you will amass some serious WEALTH in the coming years plus it will create lots of jobs for the people. On the flip side I cant knock anyones hustle if they choose to buy in London, their prerogative afterall. For wealth creation possibilities check out GroExpo Unfair Advantage at GroExpo.com

The Nigerian youth are the only ones that can let all this leaders realize the fact that we need better changes but those leaders use the youths in a way that we don't care about our country anymore, we only focus on our self, to a point that even in abroad Nigerians don't give a fuck about his/her fellow Nigerian in a bad condition. I believe the Nigerian youth have the braveness and the power to make a Revolution and let all this corrupt leaders realize that we need a better change. Proudly Nigerian....

Having lived in England and 7 other countries, I have to say England is overrated. Bad weather, alot of snubby people, expensive house prices with small cars, small roads and oh small houses with no private space away from neighbors. The houses will make you feel like you're living in a cardboard box. My advice don't buy property in any UK locations including Ireland too.

Is good to buy a house wherever one finds him or herself,but first start from your own country. The question is buying such expensive houses does it really worth it, just buying the house not the land?. To me it doesnt worth buying such apartments. Is better buying in a nice moderate areas(so long the area is peaceful)

Nigeria is in serious trouble. How on earth would any reasonable human being spend that kind of money acquiring properties in a foreign land? It appears the black race is hopeless. Majority of that money may have been stolen from Nigeria only to be invested in another country. Watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g_TtOzBSTcM.html
