Wealthy people in New York City are paying $300,000 for robots to automatically park their cars underground. Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola discuss on The Young Turks. Watch TYT LIVE on weekdays 6-8 pm ET. ru-vid.comlive

"Hidden deep below some of New York City’s most luxurious apartment buildings is an exclusive world of futuristic parking spaces where high-end vehicles are parked and retrieved by robotic parking systems.
The high-tech spots are a rare amenity in the Big Apple, and if you want your car to occupy one of these VIP spaces you’ve got to be ready to fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The spots are only accessible to residents of buildings where the apartments will set you back several million, and if you want your car to live there too you’ll need between $300,000 to $595,000 more to score some precious space in the private garage."

Saw a thumbnail a few months ago, some folks had not been able to use their car for several months because it was laying at the bottom of one of these robo-lots in their condo, and the condo board was not getting the robo repaired. Plus a new concern, who plugs power to the electric car once it is placed onto its $350k spot?

So you pay northward of 300,000 so that robots will park your car in the morning. At the end of the day, when you are the most tired, you have to track down and fetch your car back and drive it out of the subterranean parking garage? And I thought poor people were supposed to be the stupid ones!

As a Manhattanite who lives in inwood… I’m not bothered by the fact that this luxury exist, I’m bothered by the continuous reminder of wealth that never trickles down to the poor people.. these are people that likely don’t live in the city and have their fancy Apts empty, with an automated garage for a car they won’t drive meanwhile the person that serves their coffee at Starbucks has to live in the worse area of the Bronx or Brooklyn or queens, commute crazy hours at the mercy of the MTA all to serve people that don’t even live here. Manhattan has always been the center of nyc but by and large it’s becoming quite like a car dealership floor full of shiny expensive non drivable cars.

Walking to a subway station. The horror. I found out recently that Keanu Reeves rides the subway in NYC. There are other reasons I moved out of NYC but the subway isn’t one of them. I’ve lived in NY state all my life. There are plenty of places that are nothing like NYC. Snow can suck pretty badly. You know what we New Yorkers do? We suck it up and visit warm places on vacation when feasible. I’ve known plenty of people who moved out of NY. They frequently come back. If you don’t want to visit NY, don’t come. We have better things to do here than listen to whiners.

True. And in some urban areas, you may have to walk just as far to and from the nearest parking spot. I don't think I would want to live in New York because of the winters. But I would not want to live in a car dependent place like LA, either. The non-car dependent culture and (comparatively for the USA) good subway station is one of the main things that makes New York great. There are plenty of other great things there, but only because people can get to and from them pretty easily. Otherwise, it would be more like several towns instead of one city known around the world.

I would think people that rich who live in Manhattan would want to live in a building that provides a 24/7 car service right outside the door so that they never have to drive or even own their own vehicle, and hardly have to even be exposed to the weather at all. If I won like 1 billion dollars in the lottery, that's the only place I'd want to move to. Sure, the cars used for that still have to go somewhere, but there wouldn't be as many of them. But then again, there are those weird people who actually like driving themselves, even in the city, for some reason. There are a lot of things that suck about NYC for average people, but if I was that rich, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
