Richard Armitage stars in Arthur Miller's classic American drama brought vividly to life in this visceral new production by internationally acclaimed director Yaël Farber.
In a small tight-knit community personal grievances collide with lust and superstition, fuelling widespread hysteria. Miller's timeless parable attacks the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.

God, this man is perfect! His every gesture, the way he talks, his intricated mind, his vocabulary, his deep voice, the expresion in his eyes, the wrinkles around them, the quietness, the contradiction between his innate power and his insecurities, all make him beyond charming, he's hypnotic.

I have recently become of fan of RA from the Hobbit movies and watching North and South about 2 months ago and since then have watched everything he's been in that I can find and am happy he has this role even though I will never see it. I'm glad doors keep opening for him, he's a truly beautiful, gifted actor, human being and gentleman and in today's world that's refreshing and delightful to see.

Please record and release a DVD of this! So many of us would love to go see this live--I'm sure Mr Armitage will be spectacular, as always--but since we can't, we'll settle for the next best thing. What I'd give to go and watch for myself though!

Terrific interview. I'm surprised by the relatively modern-day look of the poster. And am even more intrigued by how Yael Farber will interpret Miller's iconic play. Wish I could be there to see it!

That would be wonderful! There are far too many of us who can't experience it in person. A DVD won't be exactly the same, but I would still love to see it. I hope they make it happen!

Loved him in this. A classic actor in one of the 20th century’s best stage plays. And he wasn’t playing a dwarf. Although I did miss his long hair from the HOBBIT movies…

Got our tickets, flying in from Ireland, end of August, 3 WHOLE MONTHS to wait! Really looking forward to seeing this amazing actor who is my favourite Guy. Saw the film in 1996(?) with Daniel Day-Lewis, it was harrowing but very memorable, sure Richard will be as good as, if not better!

Quite overwhelmed even by this short video and The Old Vic poster. I have followed Richard's career for years now and believe he will be sublime in this role. Sadly I can't be there to see it in person so I pray they make a video of it! PLEEEASE!

Got my ticket for September, but I really hope the play will be filmed and released as DVD or video on demand. I surely would buy it in a second and people unable to fly to London would have, at least, an opportunity to watch it. As usual, Richard Armitage adds his passion and dedication to the character. Can't wait to see the result. I'm intrigued but the modern Proctor the official poster shows. The modernity of Miller's text is a punch in the teeth for everyone taking the disturb to reflect a little. I'm sure Director Farber will give us a stunning adaptation of the original play.

Thank you so much for posting this! It s great to hear that this project means so much to him. I will see the play more than once in July and I'm so much looking forward to it. The theme is universal and will, unfortunately, never be out of date. I thought I would never see Richard Armitage live, but it will finally happen! He is my fovourite actor of all time. He is such a talented actor and such a humble and beautiful person. I'm so proud of him. I wish wim all the best in in his life and career.

What a fantastic video! I won't be able to see the play as I live in Florida, but looking forward to reading reviews from those who do see it. To hear Richard talk about our society and how cruel we are to one another brings a profound sadness..because it's so true! Will be interesting to see how this play affects those in the audience. Way to go Richard!!!

It's really too bad that plays like this will never see DVD release following the play's run for those who can't go to London or New York to see them. Very few people ever get to see these and it's both sad and unfair the rest of us will never see them.

***** I've seen that one and it was absolutely wonderful! I was glad it made it to DVD. Unfortunately that's the exception rather than the rule with Theater work. One can only hope some of these will do the same as Hamlet did. Wish the two that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen did together in New York (No Man's Land and Waiting for Godet) had been videotaped. I would have loved to have seen those. Maybe we'll get lucky and this version of The Crucible will find its way to DVD.

I read this particular play out loud with my class mates in 5th or 6th grade. I remember feeling rather horrified that people could be so viciously cruel to each other and lay such hateful and damning accusations upon others out of hatred, jealousy, spite, greed, whatever, KNOWING that the accused would suffer so horribly for it. So many innocent people were murdered because of this sort of thing around the world, from the Inquisition to the Salem Witch Trials and beyond, to the 50's and 60's here in the US with the Anti-Communism movement that laid condemnation on often innocent people, all for the same reasons, and often with pretty horrible results - from imprisonment and deportation to torture and even death. It's a deplorable act to condemn someone to such a fate for selfish ends, knowing the person they condemn is innocent. I've never understood how people can be so inhumanly cruel to others, especially towards people they know. Richard is right though, that such a play forces you to look at yourself, your motives and how you treat others. Often the thing we hate most is that which we are forced to see when we look in the mirror. Is it any wonder that the most vicious and spiteful people tend to not have mirrors in their house?

A perfectly cast Richard Armitage I can't wait to see the passion he will undoubtedly bring to the role. I have friends from OZ coming over - now that's RA dedication. Such a shame The Old Vic won't be filming it as there's such a big demand out there for it on DVD.

So there are a number of theatre groups that have been involved in cinematic live streaming events of high-profile productions (Tennant's Richard II, Hiddleston's Coriolanus, etc.) I am keeping all of my digits crossed that The Old Vic may do the same with this production. This needs to be seen by as many people as possible....!! Would someone pleeease leave me a response if they find a link / see any information regarding such an event? Thanks muchly! :)

Must go and see this if I can find the time, although I don't understand why Richard has chosen an American Play when there is so much History of innocents being burned, drowned hung or imprisoned as Witches in England, including the innocent Women of Pendle who were imprisoned in Lancaster Castle, ( not far from Gisburn, Lancs.,) during the 'Pendle Witch Trials' in 1612. I do get to London fairly often, so maybe I'll have time to go and see how Richard plays this one.

Other than disagreeing with him, I strongly feel like I have absolutely nothing in common with Richard Armitage cause he can read all kinds of books he likes or has huge interest in and can perform at all kinds of plays if he wanted to. But to be honest, I never necessarily read a book much except probably a few in my childhood years cause I had problems and difficulties with reading, so even if I ever wanted to or liked a book, it would be severely hard for me at a very young age. Eventually I got a little better with it than the past. That's one of the basic things we both definitely do not have in common. He can probably read very well like a normal person with no problems with it at all, but I had major struggles with it while growing up. To me, it makes me feel like anything or anyone so super-sophisticating and completely impressionable by looks just simply doesn't help much with any sympathy for mine or anyone else's severe hardships. Also, he's probably rich with lots of money, just like any other celebrity in the world. He could be a millionaire! I don't know for sure! But I'm definitely not a millionaire. He lived in an environment where he can go to a drama school in school and college for a certain amount of years. I don't have that opportunity in the environment I live in. In the environment I lived in while growing up, there's not much opportunity to even go to college for any kind of entertainment at all whatsoever. Apparently, most of the U.S. does not have much opportunity for colleges except to just study to get better paying jobs and make bigger wages of money for real life. It seems like most of the U.S. cares more about money and society rather than personality, talent, or entertainment. So more likely, if I ever go to college, I'll just have to study something by a matter of interest, regardless of whether I want to do it or not, cause where I live, it only matters what someone wants to do in their life as long as it'll be suitable to make enough money, which honestly, I find this ideality of education very frustrating and lots of overwhelming stress for many young people. Where I live, I find it very unfair that not everyone can be successful studying who they want to be and have to study something else just for the money. For me as a person, I don't think it's all about the money, but apparently most people in this world are, and in a career, I wouldn't want to make any career of mine in the future about money. And where I live, there's lots of pressure in school. When I went to school, I was forced to study classes in high school to simply meet the high school credits whether I wanted to take any of it or not and to take many ridiculous tests even if I really didn't want to, and I hated taking the tests in high school. So it wasn't much fun whatsoever for me to go to school that I practically dropped out of high school to graduate somewhere else, and now I'm completely done with school, I'm very relieved. I bet at least he never necessarily had to go through any of that pressure! At least he could participate in plays at school and his future adult life if he wanted to and that he could be a success so easily. I or most of anyone in my environment can't! It's just that to see someone like him so successful and seems to really have a love of reading makes me feel like I'm such a terrible person just because I never read much in my childhood life, as if no matter any of the weight of mine or anyone's severe hardships in life or childhood life. I also bet he's never been bullied when he was young, cause it seems like almost about everyone around him seems to really love him. But even though I haven't been bullied as much as other kids in my childhood life, to be honest, I remember being mentally or even a little verbally bullied and sort of made fun of in school by both, grownups and other kids, but I don't have much of those problems now as I did then. The basic contrast between me and him is that I never read as much as he has while growing up, and I don't feel he would understand what hardships in life are like or that he'd ever have sympathy for it, especially not mine because he doesn't know who I am, but I bet even if he were to ever know me, he wouldn't care. Of course cause he wouldn't find reading hard at all, he certainly wouldn't understand or care to understand how hard it was for me, though I wish he would if he knew me, but apparently that's his choice, cause I already know I can't change him or his mind. Although, now I'm done with school, I'll probably read more often than I used to, and not try to let my struggles with it ruin any of my interests for reading any books. It's just that I never had a background of loving to read anything while growing up, and anything I liked reading was in my older teenage years such as 18 or 19 years old. At least he read all kinds of books and participated in plays even younger than 10 years old if he wanted to.
