Others are busy on the celebrity circuit; Ashcroft just quietly gets on and works on creating outstandigly fine music. Haunting, melancholy and beautiful. Oh and that voice! Sublime.
@@nepopois9553 Agree wholeheartedly. I think the "they dont own me" and "natural rebel" themes have always been present; even prior to him having articulated them as such. One need only look back to Northern Soul when with the Verve and listen to "History".... Obviously before the huge success of Urban Hymns with The Verve and yet still one cannot fail to notice his lucid distinction even relatively early in his career as to whom he is and how he won't compromise himself. Love and peace to you and to all persons. 💙👌. .
James: Agreed. He doesn't do that celebrity circuit, paparazzi thing his peers incline toward. I like that about him. You're absolutely right about recognition though; as a vocalist and lyricist he's (at least for me...) the finest of his (and my) generation. Reclusive, and disinclined to self-publicise, I think he will not have the recognition in his lifetime at least. That said; since 'they don't own' him.....our finest 'natural rebel' is, I'm only guessing - obviously, not remotely bothered and far too cool and fiercly guarded regarding his privacy to care. Best wishes to you and to all. Txx
One of his first solo gigs, The Electric ball Room, Camden. He got so nervous and froze not long into Sonic, Liam walks on and steps up the the mike get the audience to give Richard lots of support and we all sing the words for him, what a moment that was.
You don’t get legends submerged like Ashcroft does in music now, look at lads in studio looking at screens, not realising they are witnessing greatness
In the mid 90's I was really into this new band from the UK called Oasis. I then met this girl who told me I should check out a band called The Verve. I lost that girl somewhere in time, but to this day I owe her a huge favor.
Reading these comments and I've come to realisations, that no one understands a word he is trying say. Yeah he is a fantastic singer and his guitar work is outstanding. But his true genius, his true beauty is in his consciousness and the way he is trying to wake peoples minds up out of the matrix, the matrix most people call life!!!!!! If you don't understand, "YOU ARE OWNED!!!!!!"
Amazing his vocals just get better and better. After my Brocken wrist he gives me inspiration to play my guitar again when it’s so difficult.@pcanham54 instagram
All the business with bittersweet symphony and the stones really shorted the world of what an amazing artist Richard is and the verves potential. I always come back to the verve and richards music when I need a boost, so underrated, so beautiful. Truly underrated music. Check out all the verves tracks mate, and the acoustics you will be blessed brother
I’ve loved this guy since I bought Urban Hymns on cassette in 1997. He doesn’t age, his voice doesn’t age. I’ve seen him 3 times in the last 4 years and I’d watch him every night if I could. He’s special and his songs are special. The voice of a generation
Absolutely!! "The voice of a generation," describes Richard Ashcroft and his songs perfectly! No other artist or band has songs that age so well... even his songs written in 1993/1994 (and before and after) still SPEAK today. The messages in his words are so timeless that they mean as much (if not more) to today's times than the time in which they were written. Just absolute classics. Richard Ashcroft is so incredibly sadly underrated and underappreciated (especially in America!)!!!
I like Richard Ashcroft and his writings, his narrative is always unmistakably direct. I knew a couple of lads who used to be part of one his support acts, I passed up on an opportunity to play drums for them with being busy, they were great guys as well.
Unbelievable, blown away!! this is a top notch artist, this guy has it in the blood! Mind blowing, my goodness! Can't understand one can dislike, really...may be his jelous ex girlfriends!!
I love art of all types I do sculpture in stone and steel but the way you capture music is unbelievable, the emotion I feel when you sing is on another level, how do you do it? I understand art but you are something else, what you have is a true gift and fortunately for the rest of us you have been brought to the fore . Cheers G
the soul that he bleeds is unreal, close your eyes, drift away, from the Verve to his solo career, that man is one of the best singer songwriters we have x
Not only does nobody own or control this 'natural rebel'; they also cannot touch him vocally or lyrically. For me - and I entirely understand and appreciate that others' will disagree, as is their absolute right of course! - Ashcroft is the finest vocalist and lyricist of his (and my) generation. His music is the soundtrack to my life.
Im flabbergasted that there is 38 people out there that have the audacity to give a "Thumbs down" for this slice of perfection!!!! ....Must be avid Justin Bieber fans !!!!
Is it true what they say? Nothing in life is free Are you looking this way Surely this can't be I know that you Ain't like the other ones March to a different beat, babe Banging a different drum I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I ain't playing their games I am nobody's fool Yeah, I know how it feels I broke those rules Are you walking with me? Or are you running with them? Are you ever free? Is this something that you understand? I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me They don't They don't own me Is it really that strange To try and find some peace? Is it so opaque That you still can't see? Them, right up above I wonder what they can hear I guess we all mess up, baby Mmm, we're here, then disappear I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I think I told you before that They don't They don't own me I think I told you before, yeah They don't They don't own me
Gorgeous tune this is one of his best ones. Everything he's done from the verve to his solo stuff, this is up there in the top out of all his creations musically, his live performances are all compelling and pashionful everytime oner of the true great human celebrity free spirits of our time.
Thanks for this, love hearing acoustic music, a guy/gal with some songs and an acoustic guitar and Ashcroft is one of the best :) Anyone know when this was actually performed? Guessing a good few years back.
Im 47 the brit rock era was unbelievable.... but as you get older you listen to the words .... probably lived the words .... people like ashcroft will be listened to by people like me till we turn turn to dust... what an era of music !
