Richard Ayoade (SUBMARINE, THE DOUBLE) stopped by the Criterion offices and talked about a few of his favorite films in the DVD closet! Shop Richard's Closet Picks! www.criterion....
"White chicks" was a pretty big hit here in Brazil, i was surprised when he mentioned it on countdown and then was surprised again that he was just mocking it.
"This is the sight of my personal financial ruin." Truer words have never been spoken. I've often joked, crack would be cheaper. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Yes, my personal financial ruin...the cost of my ISP and phone data plan for all those e-mails and calls to Criterion's office from across the pond, asking for promo copies.

The Criterion Collection better add Submarine because that film is designed to be released on it! Love Submarine's story, humour, acting, characters, Erik Wilson's beautiful cinematography taking place in Swansea, Wales, the incredibly underrated score by Andrew Hewitt and an iconic soundtrack by Arctic Monkeys Frontman Alex Turner to boot! Timeless, funny, charming, endearing, but, sad and plucks your heart strings throughout! I still haven't seen the IT Crowd and think Richard Ayoade is talented at comedy and most likely the most successful British Comedian film director since Terry Gilliam!
I like Richard Ayoade a lot but Submarine is a fairly average film. I enjoyed it but didn't feel that original. There's a long long list of films that should be added that haven't yet and Submarine is definitely not high on there.
It *was* longer; this was a brief lighting and sound check. Ayoade, known as "The Lugubrious Chestnut" to his peers, held court in that closet for nearly three hours. The extended cut will be released as a special feature on a Criterion DVD of his choosing.
Sisters Certified Copy (in his hands) Zazie Dans La Metro Le Havre I think he also mentioned Kazan (?) (he mentioned it in a mumbly fashion possibly), so that would be On the Waterfront.
Listening again, he actually mentioned Chabrol's Les Cousins, not Kazan. So, full list: Sisters Certified Copy (holding) The Magic Flute Zazie dans le metro Persona Le Havre Les Cousins
Casey Bargsten I’ve seen all of his picks and I hated them all, but I like the things he’s in Sisters Certified Copy Persona Zazie Dans La Metro The Double La Havre To count the ones he mentioned
Always love these videos but they also always make me think of these filmmakers' personal collections. A video series of the movie collections/movie rooms of various filmmakers and actors would be so great. Someone make it happen! ^_^
"You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't steal a baby. You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet. You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again! Downloading films is stealing. If you do it, you will face the consequences."
Sisters (1973) dir. Brian De Palma The Magic Flute (1975) Ingmar Bergman Zazie Dans le Metro (1960) dir. Louis Malle Le Havre (2011) dir. Aki Kaurismaki Les Cousins (1959) dir. Claude Chabrol
Meh, there's nothing embarrasing about watching your favourite films if you're an ocular orientated person, Richard. It's no different than listenting to your favourite albums repeatedly. I must have watched The Shining at least a 100 times over the years... ok, that is embarrasing.
What many don't know is that the Criterion Collection closet floor is recessed about three feet lower than its exterior; Ayoade was consulted on the initial design in 2004 and its unique features afford him a greater vantage point.
So...does this mean Criterion's working on a release for one of his films? Or has he contributed on some of their releases before? Either way, loved his reaction to being in the closet. It must be so unbelievable.
I'm lowkey bummed to hear Jesse Eisenberg didn't find Buster Keaton helpful in forming his character. Buster is ALWAYS helpful in forming my character, spirit and sense of _joie de vivre_ ... and I'm now highkey annoyed with myself that I've succumbed to using the unimaginative buzzword 'lowkey'. Damn. Back to Buster school of manners. There are no bad Busters.
So what???? Ayoade dose not seem to have picked anything. He says he has already "RUINED" himself financially "ON A PRETTY PROFOUND LEVEL". But I was under the impression that these "Pick" videos were a give away!?!!!!! IMHO. (The Criterion G-A-W!!!! imho)
He mentioned Sisters, Zazie dans le metro, Le Havre (talking about kaurismaki), he then mentions a film or director I don't understand and finally buster keaton...
The Magic Flute? Which performance? Metropolitan Opera with Kathleen Battle as Pamina? Moll sings Sarastro in that one if I remember correctly...... me super smart! Real opera smart!!
I love you, Richard. But Zazie dans le Metro is nothing more than a collection of sped-up chase- sequences. Sometimes the Film does achieve the magic of a child's book, however, it is extremely tiresome
I've never been quite sure if the people in these videos are expected to pick out favorites, to provide viewers with some insight of what they like most, or if they are genuinely supplementing their current collections, and therefor picking movies they like but are NOT favorites already in their own collections.
