His piano solo on "This Masquerade" is TOPS, and I think he once said it was ad-libbed? Although IMHO I find that hard to believe cause it's so PERFECT.
Chill people! This was 1994 and this was a nice casual tribute to Karen while Richard was on a promotion tour. He was very kind to play along with Kathie Lee Gifford, who for her part was no slouch in those days. She was the original singer on “Name that Tune”. No need to compare her to Karen here. She wasn’t trying to one-up Karen, but just do a little tribute in an abbreviated way. Why all the rude comments?
Let's not knock the singer, she managed fine. It is only stating the bleeding obvious to say it is not Karen. But this is a one off fun sing, not a tribute act! It IS Richard on the piano, so nice to see him at work, a fine pianist, nice clear articulation.
There will be no other female artist can compare to karen voice...i wish she still live to this day..so sad someone like her no more this in this world.
It was extremely shoking 4 me listening Karen's Theme by Richard Carpenter & inmediatly lyrics 4 Karen came to me. I hope u like it -love, from ARgentina RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aq8b3KGJbIA.html FACEBOOK: facebook.com/BozziniMaria/videos/10154458104316616
This is a very old video, but appreciated none the less! Kathie Lee sings from the heart and brings out the emotions we all felt when Karen sang the same songs. Richard's arrangements were astounding; thank you Richard!!
Good to see Richard looking so happy in this 1994 appearance. In so many appearances, even up to today (2022), when Karen comes up, Richard gets a haunted, hurt, sad look in his eyes that really makes me feel so sad for him. I'm a "big brother" with a "kid sister" and "kid brother" too. Sibling bonds can be strong, and the "brother-sister" bond may be the most powerful, emotionally close, affectionate and connected of all sibling bonds. My little sister is precious to me, and even the mere hint of a thought of losing her opens a huge hole in me and I'm SO glad that I don't have to face that right now. My biggest dread in life as the older "big brother", is the possibility that I may be the only sibling left in later years, left only with memories. God Bless Richard.
It's a snowy day in Reno NV in 2023. This is a great way to celebrate some downtime. THANK YOU FOR SHOWCASING KAREN! She influenced me so much in my teenage years. She was 10 years older than me. I call her my first vocal coach. I now sing all over the world with symphonies and chorales. Read Richard's book recently. Such a shame. I miss all of Karen's vocals.
Richie, you resemble your sister so much! It must have beem hard for you to lose her. Keep on making music, because you are a genius and millions of people love you and your art! Hugs and a standing ovation from Brazil.
I remember as a kid on the way to swimming lessons the song "Yesterday once more" many times would be on the radio! Good memories! Kathie Lee is no slouch on these songs! RIP Karen Carpenter!
what a great opportunity to listen to this MASTERFUL musician!! (& I "feel" for him -having endured MORE than his fair share of difficulties...) thanks much for posting!!
Was a sweet tribute. We all know there is no replacing Karen. I’ve never even listened to any tribute bands of the Carpenters. Just can’t ever bring myself to do it.
I backed a Karen Carpenter tribute some years back - the great thing was that she wasn't a slavish, parrot imitation, but the timbre and the style were still close enough to put a little shiver down the spine. You know it when you hear it :-)
I don't think she was trying to imitate Karen. I certainly wasn't trying to imitate Kenny Rogers that time I sang "Lucille" at Libertyland that Spring day in 1977.
Richard happy Birthday, you have such great talent, please get together with another singer and start recording again, I know you cannot Karen, I am one of your biggest fans. I miss your music.
Thank you Richard for sharing your love and talents with us!! I think of you and your sister Karen EVERY DAY as I love to sing your songs on my treasured Karaoke 🎤 machine!! “Singing this song for you” ✌🏽🎤
Go Kathie! "Close to You"" done very well. You sang in your voice but done way better than most ppl.Pretty version of "Begun" as Karen called it. "Rainy Days" sung beautifully! Thanks Kathie Lee!Nice of Richard to do this. Thanks Richard! We Love You Karen! Miss You!
Can't be easy singing Carpenter hits in front of Richard Carpenter.....Kathie Lee did a good job overall. Why would you want to follow Karen Carpenter? Nobody can do that.
Kathie Lee has an awesome voice. I'm gonna show my age here. I remember when Kathie Lee was on the game show Name That Tune. . Have to say Love the Carpenters. They are the best.
Wow! I felt like no one ever could sing the Carpenter's songs and do them justice, well I was wrong. I didn't want to like her singing them, but I did, Kathie Lee did a beautiful job. Kudos to her for her versions, and putting her heart into it!!! ❤️
Well, Kathie Lee started her career as a singer (first on the gameshow "Name That Tune"). Of course, on "Name That Tune", she never sang all of a verse of any song. As for comparing her to Karen Carpenter, I'm not going to. Karen was a talented singer in her own way; Kathie Lee is a a talented singer in her own way (of course, she is no Karen Carpenter).
I think that it isn't a good decision, Even when he was part of Carpenters, I think that karen's was the soul and giving him a record with his sister is dead and a lot of ppl think that ha was blame cuz her tragic death.
To all them people bring up Karen: We all love her and she was the best ever but she left us and Kathy was trying to help Richard C play along with it for some of the songs. Chill out.
It's obvious they didn't rehearse this before they tried it and of course Kathie Lee can't hold a torch to Karen's vocal talent or singing ability but you have to give her some credit for giving it her best shot.
I loved it. She can sing’ and had the same low tone in her voice as Karen Carpenter. Yeah she slipped up a bit’ but maybe she got nervous. It was excellent. If Anne Murray sang some of these songs’ it could also work. She has the same quality in her voice. A top class performance here. I think she sang the songs in the same key’ as they were originally sung. Someone said that Richard Carpenter didn’t sing with her’ but he probably wanted to let her carry it herself.
Look folks, Kathi Lee Gifford was a professional vocalist who was in NAME THAT TUNE. Just because she doesn't sound like Karen Carpenter doesn't mean didn't interpret those songs well.
Just got a nosebleed listening to back row trying to imitate Karen can never happen which is why no one has ever we recorded any of my music and made it popular otherwise I had his songs copied and have had some success no one has ever imitated been a success recurrent songs and listen to this Crow stretch it out is an insult I can't see I Richard could even play the piano and talking about Karen which is why Kathie Lee has disappeared and Karen will be around for the next century rest in peace my darling is singing with the angels
Kathylee is a fine singer, but she's more of a lounge singer style. No justice here, but fun. And nice of them to honor the great Karen Carpenter. Seeing and hearing Richard play those opening notes to Close to You can bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eyes. Not that I would know, I'm speaking about someone else, you know, a friend.
I remembered an old episode of the Diagnosis Murder tv show. Dick Van Dyke's real life daughter was in this episode when she was singing some Christmas songs and happen to sound like Karen Carpenter. At first I thought the singing was dubbed and seen that particular episode a few times. Then I happen to look up Dick Van Dyke's bio info, which mentioned that his daughter was a singer but her voice sounded alot like Karen Carpenter.
He will be fine ...he still gets all the royalties from all the music sales....ma ma's baby boy the favorite....That mother wouldn't even tell Karen that she loved her and she didn't because she was jealous of her own daughter and seemed like she was in love with her son.
