No matter what he says in this interview, humility and modesty aside, how amazing to be that person out of all of us in the U.S. and the world. He was not just an insanely talented actor, he was a star. Before the 80's became the 80's with the youth culture and brat pack, Richard Gere was John Travolta's main rival as planet earth's male sex symbol.
he tends to be vague when answering interview questions and spins it all in in a metaphysical way...American Gigolo had a huge impact it gave a peek into the glamour and excess that was the 80s .. He never admits to how beautiful he was, how he inspired through fashion sex and and his acting an unattainable beautiful being that everyone's breath was taken by its power if just for a moment.
He strutted around on screen like he was very very special. And I think audiences want to see that in a leading man, along with great acting in the moment...
"An Officer and a Gentleman" was impressive on many levels, but my friends and I (in our 20's at the time) loved the movie and talked often about character, determination and the rewards thereof. It made a difference, for the better regardless of how "pedestrian" Richard views his abilities.
Gere came very close to starring in CRUISING.....Friedkin wanted him, but the studio said no.....I think if Friedkin had revisited Gere for TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA, it would've done 2x the box office biz

I wont say Gere is one of the great American actors because he is not. But he is one of the biggest stars. I was 16 in 1990 when i 1st saw American Gigolo and id never laid eyes on Gere in my life. I just thought he was the coolest mofo id seen up to that point. And it was his greatest movie to date.
