There’s a good history behind the design of the Allegro. The CEO at the time gave the design team a budget to go away and design a car that made him think of his first girlfriend. When the prototype was made he said it didn’t even make him think of his dead grandmother.

I remember when my dad came with a new car in 1986. It was trabant, almost exacly the same as the old one. However as the six years old I was fascinated by some new electronic device, probably the primitive fuel consumption "computer", so there was no disappointment whatsoever LOL

My dad used to have a 2000s Impala, I remember one day when he came to pick me up from kindergarten, I walked out to the parking lot with him to find an badass looking 2006 Cadillac CTS-V, painted in all black. I know it's not much compared to some others but to me it was a super badass looking car to see my dad driving

my dad bought a W123 200 when I was 3, and sell it when I was 10 after an accident. Our brake didn't work when we went down a hill and hit rock face. Still love that car, it's beautiful and graceful.

My dad had a yugo in the early 90’s. He loved it because it was basic, cheap to run and it could fly over speedbumps. The problem was it rotted around him😂🤣😂

I grew up in the 70s and just do not even remember that they made an estate of the Allegro. But holy crap, that's an ugly thing, maybe I've blanked out the memory. Just FYI, at the time my Dad had a Cortina. (Edited due to typo)

Deco Dolly Like they said, Britain was collectively swept up in the jubilant fervor of the Cortina back then, save for the miserable souls in the Midlands, specifically Birmingham. I come from Leeds, so we were a Ford family. I do feel for Hammond, as my mates each had a Maxi, and a Marina, so I know the horror of owning something as dismal as a BL car.

My Mother bought a brand new Datsun 120Y in some baby boy blue colour. Being a kid I was horrified at what she had bought shows you how much I knew about cars back then. Couple of howlers in-between and then a Volvo 343 metallic gold it was a brilliant car, but the one I remembered most and going with Mum too the show room was the Rover 2.6 SE in metallic blue, you felt cool getting picked up from school in that car 40 years ago.

I grew up in Germany during the late '70's, early '80's. My dad kept buying from the same family-owned dealership as they changed from selling Simcas to Talbots to Peugeots. When I became old enough, he let me have some input for his car purchase. So I recommended to buy the mid-range Talbot Solara. Because it had a trip computer, which was a little screen that showed some data (such as fuel consumption) and some push buttons for it. Ah, the simple tastes!

My stepfather bought two Kia's through the lifespan. One was a Magentis and it was alright and then he sold it for a Sedona and I was wondering why did he choose this when VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy existed. He need more luggage space and seats which is why he bought it. He did eventually buy a 2002 Mercedes S class so hey good for me.

@@MarcKloos oh yeah that would have been a mk1 Cortina, they were sold side by side with the Taunus in mk1 and mk2 form until 1970 when Europe got the Taunus and Britain, America and the colonies got the Cortina instead

our first car being a 1969 Opel B Kadett Caravan.... after that we had a 1977 VW Passat and as a 2nd car a 1979 Passat, my first own car a 1982 Passat... i also owned Merc, BMW, Peugot, Renault and now a Hyundai, extra small i10, made in India! no more troubles for parking it in the narrow streets of my not so old town, just 800 years old..!

Mate had a two door in London between 2004-06 which we drove a lot, everyone loved it. It wasn’t even a decent example but it just stood out among all the bland modern stuff. Very comfortable too.

Sierras were 1980's-1993 Cortinas and Australia made do with a bunch of Mazda 626 clones known as The Telstar between 1983 and 1995.

Eh now, 91 Accords were built like tanks. I had one for my first car. That sucker was fast. 2.2 L 16 valve 4 cylinder coupe. My car could destroy my friends 25k mile 95 Jetta GLS and my other friends 93 Manual trans jetta. so Yeah 91 accords are awesome.

Idea for an episode : Richard Jeremy and James tour the Yorkshire moor roads as Compo Foggy and Clegg in reasonably priced classic probably a British sports-touring car, an Austin Allegro and Wally's motorbike-sidecar.. As I remember it was only the clutch housing oil seal that went on my estate, the other 3 Allegros I had, 2 of them I had to replace the engines 🤔 I never bothered with a MK3.

Agreed. I get mocking the Allegro, it's not a great car but it wasnt an awful one either. Just ugly. That car has survived for nearly 40 years and looked to be pretty pristine. There aren't many left now. It was a shame to ruin it for a joke. The Picnic though? That deserved it.

Ha Ha my father had a Golf GTI, coolest car ever when you are 10, he used to drift trough the corners. Now he drives a Honda always at a safe speed of 25 m/h but that is another story...
