Richard Harris: Gayla

Another great song from the wacky duo of Richard Harris and Jimmy Webb. Previously, they had given us bizarre songs like "MacArthur Park" and "The Yard Went on Forever," both of which I highly recommend, if only for their senseless lyrics and wild orchestras. "Gayla," which is about (I think) a little girl whom someone is trying to kill (or, perhaps, offended with a dirty joke,) appeared on the album "The Yard Went on Forever."
Lyrics:
Gayla's taking all her bows in hand
She's skipping like a stone through the garden
She's chasing her small butterflies
All through the golden morning
But what ancient beast have you set to wait
Beside her tiny garden gate?
As though you did not know
She was a child
As though you did not have
Your dagger filed
Beneath your red soaked stinking cloak
Gayla's learning all the moonbeams' names
She counts all the stars on he fingers
She could put dust on old moth wings
And fly through the golden morning
But what ancient demon would you dare unloose
Upon that tiny pink pale throat?
As though you did not know
She was your dream
As though you did not mean
To make her scream
God damn you!
God damn you!
Damn you and your dirty joke!

So sad this is a very much underrated effort by Mr. Harris and Mr. Webb. Thank you TheMarioBros for bringing this classic back to reality~~~Rock On!!!!

Jimmy Webb's lyrics sung by the amazing actor Richard Harris are beyond anything written and sung these days. I bow to them and wish we could hear more from them...

What a shame this track was cut short at the end and so omitted the most beautiful part of all: the famale chorus comes in with the line, "Is everybody safe ?", the opening words of the title track, with French horns then playing the six-note motif that runs through the entire album. The female chorus continues the extended closing note to the very end. It is wonderful. I recommend everyone listens to the full version.

So right. If you truly comprehend the beauty of this album, that closing segment lasting about 25 seconds is simply awesome, and that is down to Jim Webb's production. It is worth noting that this demonstrates a great advantage of vinyl over all other recording formats. I reach the end of side one, track after track of exquisite orchestration, intense themes and the vocal treatment only Richard Harris could bring to them, all topped off by the French horns, and my emotions are wrung out. With the epic Hymns From Grand Terrace waiting on side two, I need a pause . When Mister Blue Sky gently asked, "Please turn me over," he might have added, "But only when you're ready." I can't remember if I saw it on RU-vid, but someone wrote that this album came along during a bleak period and may have saved their life. I can well believe it.

Who knows what Webb was thinkiing when he penned these lyrics? I only know that parts of this song always rambled through my head whenever I had to work a child abuse case. In thirty years of police work, I had this feeling in my heart as I walked out of the ER or crime scene when children were involved. The loss of innocence, the destruction of a young life by some worthless bastard always left me feeling the last line in my soul. God forgive me.

Do you know the lyrics? What happened in the song?

If one takes the Archetype all the way to the Absolute, the lyric works perfectly if one pins the antagonist as Lucifer. I think Webb showed great courage in stating something so bold brilliantly, completely without religious inferences. The whole record is so deep and perceptive it approaches the profound romanticisms of Hesse, Dali, or Bergman.

This song appears to be a metaphor for the loss of childhood innocence; and the antagonist in this case is simply of the onset of puberty. Recall that in the First Hymn, Richard paints a touching pastel memory image of children playing outdoors. Elsewhere on the album he describes the turbulent teen years (Interim) and the changes in personalities of both the protagonist and his female interest. This metaphor applies also in the first and last songs by his description of the LA they grew up in

The one and only song that troubles me 50 years , later I bought a new CD so there would be no sound interruptions but I'm no closer to it's true meaning .. Jimmy writes about his pain , so I'm thinking this happened to someone he adored .. That's the tragedy ... I'm so sorry Gayla was robbed of her innocence by a monster ... I pray she's forgiven ,"whoever did this" to her body and soul ... It was never her fault❤️❤️❤️

It seems pretty clear that it's a song about an innocent and imaginative child who was molested or possibly raped by a man with no morals and no conscience. At first I thought the profanity at the end was screamed by Gayla herself ("As if you did not mean to make her scream, "G-- D--- you!") but in retrospect I believe it was Jimmy Webb expressing his disdain and condemnation of the man for sexually assaulting Gayla and making her scream. A disturbing but powerful song.

I was named after this song… unfortunately the registrar who completed my birth certificate, misspelt my name and left the ‘Y’ out 😂… my mum didn’t realise until she got home and couldn’t be bothered to go back and change it 😮
