Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Recall that he played rugby and played well. Cuts and bruises were something to wear for the world to see. The athlete mentality was strong with RH. Also, he embraced the wild side of his personality. Today most people will test the temperature of the culture to decide what part of their personality to sho the public. Not this guy. Who doesn't miss the "take what you get" attitude and I'll let you be who you are?

@@bozzskaggs112 I was his 'room service' person the last couple of years of his life when he resided at the Surrey Hotel in NYC. He then looked entirely like Prof. Dumbledore (a year after the 1st Harry Potter), and he would invite me in to place the serving tray on his table and then have me wait in the entrance-way, as he fished for a substantial tip!! Harris was always gracious and a pleasure to serve!

I can't even imagine the days of Richard Harris, Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole and Oliver Reed all hanging out together rip-roaring drunk. In 1960s London pubs shouting profane jokes and Shakespeare quotes at each other in their legendary theater-trained voices. That combination of talent and ability to hold alcohol will never be seen again.

@@tc98826 Of course, they were all alcoholics but in those days alcoholism wasn't really seen as an illness. Reed couldn't "hold" his drink at all, btw. After about drink number 6 he'd get very nasty.

Clint Eastwood said that the part of English Bob in Unforgiven was written especially with Harris in mind. He had never met Harris but had been a fan of his for many years. Harris was a big Eastwood fan and accepted the part on the spot. Asked to describe what Harris was really like Clint gave his honest opinion. Huge in size and personality, gifted as an actor and without a doubt a little more than slightly insane!

His speech in the Oliver Cromwell movie addressed to parliament is one of the greatest scenes in movie history. I just wish someone would use the same speech in real life today. RIP Richard, you are etched into my childhood memories thanks to my grandfather.

Richard Harris was one of the finest actors and gorgeous man who ever graced the stage. I will never forget his unbelievable acting in This Sporting Life. I fell in love with him then and still get tearful watching him in anything. He died too young. What I would have given to see him in person. God rest your soul, Richard Harris! You were the best.

So happy to hear someone of a new generation recognizes the value of Cavett and his interviews. He did the homework to prepare and it keeps the conversations bubbling and generally with ease. For me and most of my friends it was required viewing for its candor, intelligence, and introduction to "inside the guest".

Dick Cavett is so quick and witty. He was class. God, I can't watch Fallon. He's always laughing and whooping it up and getting his guests to do the same. I'm a big fan of Richard Harris. Great actor. I didn't know he got into fights.

Ah Fallon isn't too bad, he's a decent enough person (which is saying a fair amount for a Hollywood type) and the product of a totally different age. He certainly isn't a match in terms of charisma and wits that's for certain, but you could do a lot worse than that (the unfortunate fatty fatty, two by four, can't fit through the kitchen door that we here in the UK somehow managed to dump on the Americans comes to mind).

I'm not that old (62) but it is the first time I see Sir Richard Harris without his mane of white hair. How nice of him to have gently reminded to the old dame that he starred with her in his first two movies. Gosh... You have may have liked the bottle but I find you so likeable!

Fighting was much more common 50, 40, even 30 years ago. I haven't been in very many fights in my life (I could count them on one hand and still have fingers left over), but I've noticed how much rarer they have become in our current era. Maybe it's due to the fact that one bar fight can lead to ten years in jail today.

My mates grandad was a DOP on a film Richard Harris starred in, shot in the UK, and his stories about the few weeks of filming, well the evenings, are hilarious and mental. Harris was the real deal, hard living, hard fighting, hard drinking Celtic man.
