I've been feeling this way for a long time. I have to credit Good Mythical Morning's Rhett McLaughlin with learning about Richard Holloway. He spoke about reading his book Stories We Tell Ourselves on his podcast (w/ his business partner Link Neal) Ear Biscuits. I just started reading the book and I'm learning more about these things I'm feeling currently.
What a wonderfully inspiring Christian priest. I totally agree with his ideas on secular morality and on the figure of Jesus Christ. As Mary, I wish there were more people like him, libertarians - respectful of people .
One day, the Church - and particularly churches in Africa, will be begging the people they oppressed for forgiveness. And the oppressed will forgive, because the oppressed know how to forgive.
Deeply glad that you're so thoughtful about morality and the wonder of life. But don't fret that the Sun will gobble up the Earth in (roughly) 5 billion years. By then (if we look after each other!) we should be living on many planets across the Galaxy, maybe even across the Universe. And, physicists know the Universe will have plenty of stars and galaxies for well over 1 trillion (1000 billion) years. Given the universe is 13.7 billion (ish) years old, this is really just the beginning.
Matthew 11:25: "at that time Jesus declared , "I thank you father, lord of heaven and earth, that your have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children. Yes father, for such was your gracious will. " The message of Jesus is hidden from this man.
