Shakespeares play about Richard III. shaped the picture we have of him through centuries, as a purely evil genius (he hasn't been at all in real life).
But even in the play I dare say that he is more than that and that he hasn't been born as the "minister of hell" he is described as in the play. I believe Shakespeares Richard became evil, because society made him so.
On several occasions he himself says, how he longs for love but doesn't get it because of his physical appearance and that this rejection throughout his life let him grow cold and crave the crown to gain respect and acceptance through his status as king, if he can't achieve it otherwise.
That's my interpretation of his fictional character as Shakespeare portrayed it.
