Part 1
H. R. (Bob) Haldeman
September 12, 1971
008-103
White House Telephone
President Richard Nixon talks with his Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman. In the first part of the conversation, after initially discussing a TV show about Nixon's wife Pat Nixon, the two men talk about Nixon's military aides. Nixon wants one military aide that he is totally comfortable around. He wants to work with someone he already knows because, he says, "it takes me a hell of a long time to get acquainted with anybody, to get used to them." One of the men he discusses is Jack Brennan, a key character in the new movie Frost/Nixon. He especially likes one aide named Coffey, because he is "extremely easy" on Nixon to be around and he knows "how to melt into the woodwork."
They also discuss the duties of Nixon's personal secretary and friend, Rose Mary Woods, who was then signing his autograph for him. Nixon praises the new secretary Nell Yates, and he also suggests that Woods' secretary Marje Acker could take over some of Woods speech typing duties.

(NARA censors beeped out some of this conversation as "personal returnable." This is represented here by approximately 5 second beeps.)
You can hear the second part of this conversation here: • RICHARD NIXON TAPES: A...

Nixon needs to get to know a person before he feels comfortable around them. It appears to me that he likes a quiet, capable person. He’s not one to pick a very loud and aggressive person. He wants a person in his staff that matches his own personality. Someone who is capable to do the job but is comfortable to be in the background and only speak when the President first speaks to them. You see how he praises his secretary. Nixon is an introvert, as I am. It takes a good 6 months before we can get use to a new person. Nixon is trying to transition a new person in gradually into his comfort zone. This tape reveals the inner Nixon and how comfortable he was around Haldeman.

These recordings are great - I could listen to them all day. I don't think there is a source that is as revealing about the heart of power. This could easily be one of us chatting with our friends. Incredible.

The tapes dont make Nixon into a good guy; they make him look more human.

Confirms that he was socially awkward. Good thing he never called himself "a stable genius"

@jatroup12 I too often thought he had a good strong, distinct, deep voice. Reagans was more pleasant and polished delivery, FDR had a nice, patrician, baritone. Jimmy Carter and George HW Bush had rather unpleasant voices.

Irrespective of political beliefs, HR Haldeman was a brilliant man. But he seemed the proverbial yes man. I don't think RMN had any tolerance for an advisor who would say, "Mr. President, you're wrong."

While he was president, Nixon was middle-of-the-road. Of course, people standing in the middle of the road get nailed by both lanes of traffic...

He was the only president to install a taping system like this, that captured everything.

Not true. Kennedy also taped. But the family and his minions tightly control what is released. Johnson also taped. So did eisenhower.
@ExVeritateLibertas
@ExVeritateLibertas Год назад
@@paddle_shift FDR installed the first taping system. But there are comparatively few JFK and FDR tapes released (that I've heard) and I don't think I've ever heard an Eisenhower tape (except JFK's and LBJ's calls to him)
@paddle_shift
@paddle_shift Год назад
@@ExVeritateLibertas Correct, Eisenhowers tapes were likely destroyed after he left or exists at his library. Kennedys as i said are tightly controlled by his surviving daughter and his library. Likely LBJ tapes are controlled for same reason.

He started OSHA, banned DDT (which I think was a mistake), and he managed to successfully hide the fact that his wife, Pat, was a life-long atheist, angry with God because her mother died when she wuddn't but 12 years old.

Like planes? Terrible imagery ...then again what's in a Congress and Treasury since it ain't my adding up? Who else did all this? I think the idea is far...but that's how bad they look to me.
