This clip is in very good quality compared to many other recordings of Tucker. This performance is from the 10 November 1956 Lyric Opera Gala in Chicago (thanks 'SHICOFF1' for the info!).
Along with the '56 and '58 Met broadcasts I also have a recording from Teatro Colon with Tucker, Crespin, and MacNeil from '65. This is not from that. There is also a recording of the opera live at the Met in 1955 with Tucker, Tebaldi, and Warren. The only difference between the '55 and '56 recordings is that Salvatore Baccaloni was the Sacristan in '55. It was not a broadcast but was released on Readers Digest and Paragon LPs years ago. I have never come across a copy of it. Could be that one.
Humm, certainly a difficult song, any tenors avoid frequently to sing e lucevan le stelle afraid to miss. Tucker's BEST performance is probably Nessum Dorma but this e lucevan le stelle looks far away from some others tenors like Plácido, Del Mónaco, Pavarotti, etc. No everybody can sing e lucevan le stelle enough well to make a decent performance. Good night. ✌️
