As part of the Marc Davis Celebration of Animation, the Academy presented a centennial celebration of Milt Kahl: The Animation Michelangelo.
This taped tribute was recorded by animator Richard Williams in London, and was presented as the closing tribute on the day of the show, April 27, 2009.
For more information on this past event, visit: www.oscars.org/...
Note: The 20 minute screening of "The Thief" at Skywalker Ranch (as mentioned by Dick in the video) was later discovered by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg, who at the time were searching for an animation director for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

Richard genuinely admires and respected Milt Kahl so much so that he spent years trying to get Milt himself to admit he was the world's greatest animator

@@tobbs5410 to be honest I don't think that was my best comment, like there had to be a better way to say that and get the same point across. Richard was my hero... I didn't have much tact at that time

@@SpiderandMosquito I wouldn't say that - it's actually a rather sweet comment and a lovely thought that they're reunited now. I was actually crying by the end of this vid.

Richard was very lucky to actually hang out and talk to the greats in animation. I'm so envious.

Miyazaki (and all anime, by definition) is limited in motion, but make up for it with smart key poses and higher detail. In the rare event that the animation is bumped to 24 frames a second, like in Spirited Away when Chihiro and Haku were flying down the chimney, it's an overload of "stuff happening." Milt was more about clarity than just fluidity or detail. Whatever pose he drew, it was the best way to draw it.

Youre confusing Miyazaki and anime tv production. No need to compare Milt and Miyazaki. Both are great

Milt Khal was the Alex Toth of animation and Toth the Khal of comic books. Both relentlessly dedicated to a high level design, characterization, style, and finish in their field, and demanded the same from their peers. Their love of their craft made them difficult at times, uncompromising, and abit scary to to those intimidated by their infamous reputations. May we all strive for the best as did Khal, Williams, and Toth did.

YES! Probably Toth was more articulated than Kahl, but they shared this harsh, uncompromising attitude towards the art.

There's a parallel to this story. In Europe, André Franquin is considered the premiere comics artist, even extending the abilities of Giraud/Moebius. There only ever was one person who didn't like the drawings of Franquin, and that was Franquin himself.

You should watch the documentary "Joy in Motion" wherein Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston admit that Isao Takahata's movie "Jarinko Chie" surpassed anything that Disney did. Peter Chung also has some stories about how floored veteran Disney animators were by Ghibli's work. Pretty sure he knows more about animation than you. Anyway, the fact that Ghibli is full of amazing draftsmen doesn't lessen Milt's achievements.

I think both are skilled and amazing animators. They just have different approaches and different tones of story telling. In terms of movement Disney animators tend to go on the overly expressive route while Ghiblis more on the realistic side. In the end animation is about how you can convey a characters emotions and intentions while making them feel believable which both have done successfully
