Richie Benaud decides upon his top six opening batsman of all time with the aim of picking the two batsmen that will make his all time favourite fantasty XI.
Footage taken from Channel Four's excellent cricket coverage back in 2003/04.
May I apologize if the poor picture quality ruins your enjoyment of this (and the subsquent) upload. It was mostly recorded on long play VHS tape, which is prone to loss of picture distortion if not properly cared for.

Wow! Saw this title and immediately thought, "Gavaskar". My first real cricket memory was Sunil Gavaskar tormenting West Indies in Trinidad in 1971. Not so much his run scoring, but his determination not to get out. Ideal opener.

Yes commentary. He has hardly anything insightful to say, nor was he sophisticated or interesting in his delivery style. My XI: Hobbs, Gavaskar, Bradman*, Tendulkar, Steve Smith, Sobers, Gilchrist+, Marshall, Steyn, McGrath, Muralitharan I broadly agree with Benaud's reasoning and conclusions, aside from his omission of west indian pacers and murali. Of course, this video was made before the era of steyn and steve smith, the latter of whom I'm sure benaud would have appreciated greatly.

From the footages available in RU-vid and the records that he made in County, Currie Cup, Sheffield Shield, World Series and a very brief but delightful Test match career, Barry Anderson Richards should automatically be in any World XI team as an opening batsman. The precursor of attacking opening batsmen who happened to have one of the most perfect technique which was far more ahead of his time. The man who invented the lofted inside-out off/cover drive! Why has everyone forgotten Bert Sutcliffe? He had a better record than any Test opening batsman, yet he is never remembered. And since he partnered Hobbs in the greatest opening or other partnership of all time, why are he and Hobbs ever separated in all-time elevens? Was Sutcliffe too modest, too introverted? I have nothing against Gavaskar - he remains the best openerI have ever seen - and I was born in 1972 - yet I would choose Sutcliffe first, before considering any other Test opener.

J PL Also he was quicker to a thousand test match runs than Bradman, he made them in exactly 10 innings at an average of 100.
@robertcameron3709
@robertcameron3709 5 лет назад
Sutcliffe was very very unlucky not to be classed as the all time best, not just as an opener, barring only Grace. I picked Hobbs as Grace's opening partner, but truth to tell it was a toss up between him and Sutcliffe. Bradman I think may have affected peoples perception of Sutcliffe by describing him as the luckiest player he ever played against. This was blatantly unfair and says more about Bradman than Sutcliffe. Bradman couldn't find a place in his world 11 for the likes of Hammond, Hutton or Hobbs, nor for S.F. Barnes, Jim Laker and most definitely not Larwood. He was clearly partisan and I think Bedser was the only Englishman I his 11. I would place Hobbs , Sutcliffe and Grace above Bradman as they were all openers whose abilities more often than not protected the rest of the order from the new ball in the hands of fresh bowlers. Bradman surely benefitted from coming in at 3 behind Woodfull and Ponsford.

@@ThankYouGoogle4 not embarrassed at all. Great openers are worth their weight in gold . George Hedley, who knew a bit about batting, felt his average (62) suffered because the West Indian openers of his time were poor. He invariably faced the new ball when it was an over or two old. Bradman came in behind Posford and Woodful when the ball was softer and had lost its lateral movement. The strike bowlers would not have been at their freshest either. Bradman was truly great, but he couldn't open.
@ThankYouGoogle4
@ThankYouGoogle4 3 года назад
@@robertcameron3709 When you put out an absolute statement like "He couldn't open" even though you're speculating, you come out as a unilateral thinker. Woodford and Ponsford retired in 1934. Even before Bradman had hit the midway of his career. Bradman has a staggering average spread across 5 different batting positions and has staggering average on each individual position as well. 70% batting at number 3 and another 30% at other positions for various reasons. And in a career that spanned across 20 years (war deprived him of playing more tests), you're telling me his openers never gave him the unfortunate opportunity to be a virtual opener? Well since you were just speculating and I wanted to make sure I was backing the right guy, I actually went ahead and checked a lot of scorecards. Guess what, prior to 1934 there have been innings where openers got out cheaply and Bradman came in and scored big. After 1934 when Woodful and Ponsford retired, he still has innings where he scored coming in at early stage. I saw 7 random innings where opener got out in less than 10 balls and Bradman came and still scored big (1 triple ton, 2 doubles, 1 century, 3 50s); 4 times he failed (less than 50). Pardon me because I could only check random 15-20 scorecards... And I excluded matches from Jardine's bodyline since Australia as a whole struggled with that negative tactic (even in that Bradman as I recall averaged high but not by his standards). Really can't dig through all of them scorecards. But yeah just because he could capitalise a lot more and Australia could benefit a lot more from him with a slight softer ball, there is absolutely no concrete evidence that would suggest he couldn't be a successful opener if Australia needed him be. I checked for an article by CricketCountry which presented a narrative of how Bradman failed in the experiment of being an opener. But even they failed to realise that Bradman had infact played another test with him being an opener in a follow-on innings : "In a trial match to select the team that would tour England, he was last man out in the first innings for 124. As his team followed on, the skipper Bill Woodfull asked Bradman to keep the pads on and open the second innings. By the end of play, he was 205 not out, on his way to 225". Look I understand your personal regard towards openers and in my opinion they deserve much more credit than they get. But to say any cricketer, be at any position, had more ability than Bradman, then remember the words of great Richie Benaud. "I infact started my career when Bradman retired so I only had the fortune of witnessing him play. But the people who have played with or against him would tell you that there was no player that could remotely be put in same category as him. He was just in another bracket." And in my opinion number 3 is infact the toughest position to bat at because you have to play dual role and you have to be technically the best batsman. If the openers play their part, you have to score big because they have already laid foundation for you. If they get out cheaply then you to have come and act as opener and provide stability. A batsman coming in at number 3 actually posses the qualities of opener and number 4 batsman. And he marvelled at number 3 (Played and scored big even when opener got out really early). You can verify all the numbers I presented.

Mark Taylor has record fewest ducks (3) in all test history for 100 tests! Finished career with 5 from 104. Clive Lloyd edged him with 4 from 114. All other players are well outside this mark. An opener who reliably doesnt get out for 0 is invaluable to a team trying to not lose. Although his average was around 44 for the back half, a high balls faced counter along with no dropped catches could be 'not losing factors' which outweigh selecting 2 flashy openers who average either the same, or a boundary and a few singles more and are known to grass the odd catch giving up who knows how many runs. Id have to select MA Taylor instantly, and the lefty will face the first ball. The other guy would need to be pretty flashy or it wouldnt work. Id probably go Taylor and Tendulkar with Lara at 3. I dont think id lose many tests.

And I have Top 6 Strong Batting Line up with Diversity so I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper Alan Knott ahead of Wicket Keeper Batsman Adam Gilchrist who unfortunately Missed out due to I have a Strong top 6 Batting order as well as Strong tail enders too like Warne , Akram and Marshall who all can Bat also. So I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper with a descent batting record, so I went with Alan Knott who was also a Man of Crisis Batsman. And But Gilchrist definitely has make into Second Test XI or Alternate XI of above All Time XI List. Then I have a 1 Great All Rounder Sir Garfield Sobers who is the Great Left Handed Batsman and can bowl three different variations of Bowling and 1 Great Spinner Shane Warne who would have a Great Right hand - Left Hand and Leg Spin / Off Spin Combinations with Gary Sobers. And at Last I have deservingly Put 3 Genuine and Complete Fast Bowlers Akram , Marshall and Lillee as 3 Pace Bowlers with Great Statistic Records among them and along with Warne and Sobers they brings Versatility and Varieties as well and also All of them played in The Most Golden , Toughest and Competitive Era of Test Cricket From 1960 to 2010 Era. And Imran Khan as the 12th Man and W.G Grace as Honourable Mentions as Grace was a Father Figure Cultural Icon of Cricket and Sir Frank Worrell is The Best Manager the Game has ever seen who can Guide your Team and Bring out the best from above players. P.S - Steven Smith , Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins are Active Players. So I will Judge them after they will retire, so we can get the clear picture of their Overall career. And Frank Chester , Dickie Bird and Simon Taufel are Umpires of above team as well as Richie Benaud , Harsha Bhogle and John Arlott are into the Commentary Box along with Historian CLR James , David Frith and Arunabha Sengupta who Judge and Write about all of these Cricketers.

After 500 Hundreds years later from now if Human Race and Cricket Exists then it would be impossible to Pick All Time World Test XI. Because imagine in only last 150 Years of Cricket. Cricket has produced many Great Cricket Legends. and Some of the Stands out names in Best World Test XI Till Date are Bradman , Sobers , Grace , Hobbs , Tendulkar , Richards , Warne , Barnes , Lillee , Marshall , Hutton , Gilchrist and Knott who all are picked by WISDEN and ESPN Cricinfo Publications. And if in last 150 Years Cricket has already produced many Legends and Tried to fit these above Legends in 11 Slots, then after 500 Years Later it's likely that Cricket would produced as Good players as Hobbs , Tendulkar , Warne , Barnes etc etc (only Bradman maybe an exception) So it's going to be impossible to Fit Many Equally Deserving Cricketers in All Time 11 Slots which was easier to put in the past and Became difficult in the present and likely going to be impossible in the Future.

One thing is Sure, Who's the Greatest of All Time is Subjective at the end but if few bunch of great players consistently made it into Some prestigious All Time Greatest lists published by Credible publications , Historians/Experts and Websites like WISDEN , ESPN Cricinfo , The Roar and etc then it will create a Legacy for those particular players because those few players having selected by these multiple publications is not a flueke but they have a commonality of Greatness at the Highest level and better than most of the other Great players who maybe perhaps not in the same Stature as those few Great players who has made it into those lists. For Ex: WISDEN and ESPN Cricinfo has consistently rated Bradman , Sobers , Tendulkar and Warne as among the Top 4 Greatest Cricketers Ever and In their All Time Greatest World XI Teams which solidify their Greatness ahead of other Great players who narrowly missed out from their Lists or didn't made it into Top 10 Rankings.

For whatever reason Richie left him out. Possibly because due to circumstances beyond his control he didn't have that long test career. However a lot of experts (including Bradman) pick Barry in their greatest test team. Me personally I saw him play in World Series Cricket in Australia, smashing a West Indies attack (Roberts / Garner) everywhere. Barry was the real deal.

All these people who are picking X1s seem to be selecting the best individual, in their view, for each role and then lining them up in a batting order and assuming that constitutes the best TEAM. It doesn't. When you are looking at the very best of the very best then they are all brilliant and the differences are minute. People are not considering the other side of people's games. For example, with all the brilliant fast bowlers to choose from, you really need to be selecting from the smaller (but still large) number who were at least competent with a bat in their hand. This brings such worthy bowlers as Keith Miller and Ian Botham into the frame, also Ray Lindwall. My all-time world X1 to play Mars in a Tardis Stadium would certainly include Sobers AND Botham AND Richard Hadlee, who would open the bowling with Marshall. Shane Warne would likely find himself fighting it out with Marshall over who should be No 10 and who No 11. Five specialist batsmen to include Tendulkar (who can bowl) but not Lara (who cannot, in any serious sense of the term) with Sobers at 6, Gilchrist at 7, Botham at 8, Hadlee at 9, Warne at 10 and Marshall at 11 gives you five all-time world-class bowlers, including one (Sobers) who is, in fact three bowlers in one person and eight all-time world-class batsmen. Any of the 11 might make 100 on his day, and all have done so in first-class cricket. It's interesting, however, that nearly everyone selects Gilchrist - and rightly so in my view, although he is not the very best of the best of the all-time international wicketkeepers. For that you would be looking at Bob Taylor or maybe, "back in the day", Don Tallon. But you wouldn't select a wicketkeeper who was not a top-class batsman when you have so many to choose from - Knott, Sangakara, Engineer, Gilchrist to name but four out of a couple dozen or so - who are.

@@srinathprakash882 Fair comment. I am in the same academic year as Imran Khan and played against him every year all through secondary school. He was good, but not as utterly brilliant as he later became in the professional game. Of course, I cannot forget Botham at Headingly in 1981, so am very possibly biased. Imran may very well be a better choice. As I said when you are looking at the very best of the very best, differences are minute. Would Botham's exemplary work at second slip come into the equation?

@@markcheckley3715 Wow! That's incredible. Well, one thing I noticed was, ever since 1983/84, Botham's performance went downhill. So, his effectiveness stops at the age of 28. Imran was a top AR till the age of 35. So, if this XI goes In, Imran gives you 7 extra years.

@@srinathprakash882 Yes but I only need 5 days 😀Actually, you could probably have both of them, with Sobers batting at 5, Gilchrist 6, then Botham, Kahn, Hadlee in almost any order and Marshall and Warne bringing up the rear. Barry Richards' rep was earned at the highest level when available - outscored Viv Richards when they batted together at Gloucester Park in Perth for the World IX against Australia in the Supertest in WSC better than 2 to 1 when Viv was in his prime & where Barry finished as not only the highest scoring batsman in WSC, but the one with the highest average - at a time when he had been out of International cricket for over 8 years! He scored double hundreds against touring MCC sides in Oz, broke all kinds of Sheffield Shield records when he played for SA in Oz in 71 where he scored 356 in 371 minutes against a near Australian test strength attack ... added to his 72+ Test average for admittedly a severely shortened test career & enforced sojourn due to no fault of his own. Added to that, Bradman's on-record assertion that if Apartheid hadn't stopped him from being excluded from Test cricket, that both he & Graeme Pollock would've likely been the greatest right-handed & left handed batsmen respectively the world had ever seen. Oh, and there was the small matter of his English county record to consider as well, where again, when tested at the highest level against national touring sides against Hampshire, he slaughtered the best attacks in the world. Seriously, do some research before making such a ridiculous and untrue statement about B.A. Richards - he was unbelievably good - and if he was Sir Don Bradman's first pick as opener for Bradman's All Time IX, then that will about do me as a measure of how highly regarded Barry Richards was amongst his peers.

o0Sandfly0o Can't agree more.Barry was technically very sound and fearless.It is very unfortunate that because of the ban on their country,we couldn't see much of players like B.Richards and G.Pollock.As my name suggests,Iam from Pakistan but I got great respect for these two greats.As for as this guy "tryarunm" is concerned,obviously he got no knowledge of cricket so he is very ignorable.

World' best XI lost comprehensively to an inform Australian best XI. In my opinion every player had a peak time in his career when he was at the best of his potential and form. So any combination of inform players not the best players at a given time would be the best XI. For example Muhammad Yousaf scored 1700 runs in a calender year when he was in the peak form and he is nowhere in the best XI.
