An extremely moving version of Pink Floyd's powerful song about the disadvantaged. From the beautifully mellow album Wishing Well.

Saw him do this a capella at Nassau Community College Folk Festival as an encore about a decade ago. Silenced the entire audience. I think he may have been the most powerful interpreter of songs of his generation.

Richie doing Pink Floyd. What a guy. His tastes were so broad and eclectic. I miss that gorgeous voice so much.

On the turning away From the pale and downtrodden And the words they say Which we won't understand "Don't accept that what's happening Is just a case of others' suffering Or you'll find that you're joining in The turning away" It's a sin that somehow Light is changing to shadow And casting it's shroud Over all we have known Unaware how the ranks have grown Driven on by a heart of stone We could find that we're all alone In the dream of the proud On the wings of the night As the daytime is stirring Where the speechless unite In a silent accord Using words you will find are strange And mesmerized as they light the flame Feel the new wind of change On the wings of the night No more turning away From the weak and the weary No more turning away From the coldness inside Just a world that we all must share It's not enough just to stand and stare Is it only a dream that there'll be No more turning away?

He was once at Seasongood Pavillion here in Cincinnati. Solo, outdoor amphitheater. FREE! The mayor used to do a free series. It was perfection they way he massaged the words, so emotionally rich. Left us speechless as well.❤️Bless you Richie!

Yes, I agree, it's an extremely beautiful rendition, and I actually prefer it to Floyd's version.

Only this man could sing this the way it’s supposed to be sung , now it’s as powerful as it should have been when it was released by the 3/4 Floyd
@tedcroaker
@tedcroaker 2 года назад
There is no doubt in my mind that this slowed down version has far more soul, largely due to Richie's voice, and the woodwind arrangement is just sublime. Check out the title track from the Wishing Well album too if you aren't already familiar.

Just a few bits and pieces “..don’t accept what is happening.. it is the case of the suffering.. the turning away.. we may find that we’re all alone in the dreams of the proud.. on the wings of the night.. as the day time is slurring.. where the speechless unite.. in the silent accord.. no more turning away from the weak and weary.. from the coldness they feel.. in the world that we all share.. it’s not enough to stand and stare.. is it only a dream that they’ll beeee..... no more turning away.. “

Sadly the (uh) Right have turned away from the less Fortunate and if you question that ideology you are subjugated and labelled unPatriotic or Worse...a Richie Havens Concert was a Happening and you felt Uplifted from his mere presence...the Man is sorely missed in this time of the body Politic telling individuals what to Think... sadly... " turning away ".

Well there's no fancy video for one thing, I don't have the skillset for that or the time to learn it. Or maybe they are Floyd fans who prefer the original. If it's not either of those reasons then they are probably not people I could relate to or lose sleep over.

You are so lucky, I never got the chance. I love this slowed-down rendition of the Floyd song so much. His voice is so vibrant, he picks the phrases slowly and deliberately to emphasise the meaning of the lyrics, and the minimalist backing instrumentation is sublime. Put on some headphones, turn the volume up loud, close your eyes, and enjoy the genius of both the song and the performance. RIP Richie.

I hate what that toff Gilmour did with Floyd after Waters left, all sounded so bland and middle of the road,,, cringe worthy shite and it hasn't aged well either! But Richie Havens has taken a naff 80's Floyd song and turned it into something beautiful...who said you can't polish a turd? he should have re-made the 'Momentary Lapse' album in it's entirety.

Have either of you heard the version of Echoes on Gilmour's Live In Gdansk? For me it's the definitive version, better than the original. Dave Mason is also doing a decent rendition of it on his current Saucerful Of Secrets tour.
