I will say that Richie had every right to be pissed off, and he’s right in saying their music was stale. Pretty low to replace his parts with Shanks. That said, Richie has always probably been struggling with identity. This band made him. I think he’s always been in competition with Jon. And he’s had a long time battle with addiction.
Just shows sometimes the good times can’t last forever. Seeing the documentary was a great insight to the situation. The Real Bon Jovi is Jon, Richie & Desmond Child. Slippery, New Jersey etc was basically lightning in a bottle. When you take one ingredient/guy away from the recipe it can still be good but not the same. What you take two ingredient’s out and insert John Shanks it’s literally what Richie said ……It’s Not Bon Jovi. But Jon knows only one way - to go on, anyway he can. And John Shanks was there and present when Richie wasn’t. It’s sad

This documentary is a ode to Jon's surgery, not a celebration of 40 years of rock and roll, it should be called Thank you, good night, the story of Jon Bon Jovi's surgery. They put Richie under a very unpleasant light. Richie could be under a lot of pressure, but taking away his craft and putting him aside was basically firing him without saying the words. Jon allowed Shanks to crack in between them for so many years, then Jon found Shanks to be less expensive than Richie. I only see Desmond Child taking Richie's side a few times. Bon Jovi is still good, not Sambora great, Richie's voice coupled with Jon's is what makes the signature sound of their songs.

Richie Was Jon's Other 1/2 In A Sexless Marriage & Closer To Him Than His Wife & I Guarantee If Jon Treated Her The Way He Treated Richie She Would Not Have Put Up With It..She Has A Black Belt & He Knew To Stay In Line But You Instead Treat Richie That Way... Blood On Blood Was The Way You Always Said It Was. Well When Put To The Test -Someone Didn't Pass Cause Jon Knew Exactly What Was Wrong & Made No Attemp In That Film To Fix It & He Could Have..He Knew What Shanks What Was Doing As Does Everyone After Seeing That Film & Thank God For Phil Saving The Band. I Used To Not Be Happy About Phil But Seeing What He Walked Into & Has Done, Hats Off To Him For Saving It & Keeping It As Close To Richie AS He Could & For That Much Love & Respect. I THINK It Would Be A Hell Of A and With Both Richie & Phil & That Is Sad..That Jon Doesn't Understand It Didn't Have To Happen That Way.. I Will Never Look At The Band The Same Way Again.. Richie is dealing with demons and had trouble delivering? OK. A real "brother" would have waited on him and helped him put his crap together instead of sacrificing an allegedly valued relationship for the urgency of finishing an album or going on tour. You had hit the big time already, what's the hurry?! But herein lies the twist: Richie had always been JBJ's employee, so that is what you do with your workers if you are a bad, heartless boss, like Johnny. This is an acid test of what the relationship truly was about.
I think Richie's departure could have been avoided because although I think it was unprofessional of Richie to leave in the middle of the tour (he didn't even call Jon personally to tell him, which really sucks), I blame Jon for letting it get to this point in the first place. All he had to do was wait another year, which I think would have made Richie stay in the band. The "What About Now" album would have been more interesting because I think the record has tons of filler. Apparently he wanted to buy a football team and then wanted to make a quick buck by making another album and going on tour so quickly. He should have listened to Richie more. Sure, Bon Jovi is Jon's band, but the problem is that he took Sambora for granted. Richie was doing a solo album at the time, so of course he couldn't put the same energy into another band album at the same time. And then Jon also had the nerve to have John Shanks play some parts on the record. Richie must have felt like an afterthought at that point. I'm a drummer, and if I found out that the producer had already played the parts I was supposed to play, I'd be pissed off too.

I will always be a die hard Bon Jovi fan and I have been for 40 years. The music died a little bit in 2013. Richie was such a huge part of the band. In my opinion, just as big as Jon. They were a legendary duo. Glad for the years of the excellent music catalog that included Richie. Miss him but still love Jon. @@lane82356 you're absolutely right on your thoughts. I've been thinking some of those same opinions. I feel like Jon made the documentary thinking he would come out of it looking like a god, but now things are going sideways, and he's not looking so picture perfect. The dirt is starting to come unearthed. I'm sure he made that doc to make himself seem like a perfect husband, a perfect band front man, a perfect philanthropist and a perfect man. You can't kick the ass to the man who was the 45% of the band and you can't replace him & sit another guitarist/composer in his privilege position..... I think THIS was the big mistake that ruined all. But it's obvious Richie had a problem and both should sit & talk with ego out of the room....but they know what truly happened in those years, not us.
I haven't purchased any album after Lost Highway. The sound is different on that 2009 album. Jon may have had an album done but as a longtime fan I didnt dig it. Poor Richie
I love Sambora. But as someone who had this same type of thing happen to their group. Richie could've had more class then to leave the entire band standing on stage in front of people. In the end "that" is on him. You keep your commitments you do everything you can not to disappoint fans.

Disagreements and fights happen in bands all the time. Richie was totally wrong in what he did and now he is using the media and fan pressure to try and force his way back into the band again without having the manner to contact the band personally and privately to ask them if he can return

That was all? no further explanation from Richie about this and his further stance on this? Nothing new, that's what everyone already knew more or less. Anyone who's ever dealt with an addict knows how it can get you down, you want to help and support, but they lie and lie, are unreliable and completely out of touch with reality. It wasn't once that richie didn't show up or couldn't do his work, it was often and over a long period of time. The fact that he still subtly accuses them of thinking they can do without him also means that before, when he didn't show up, he probably thought; they can't do without me anyway and have to wait. Someone who has overcome their addiction, has undergone therapy and can reflect on their behavior and the consequences talks differently. The sad thing is, Richie has never overcome his problems, but still thinks, as he did back then, that everyone should have waited for him and preferably canceled everything until he was able and willing again... Well, that's life. BUT Let's all be happy, nobody has died! They're still alive, they're still making music, we have endless old recordings from back then that we can listen to and watch. Something like RU-vid would have been a dream for us in the 80's/90's! We're still young enough, soon we'll be really old, the first one dies and then the next one and we wish we hadn't been so strict when it was still possible!
How about Jon's problems? He has been singing terribly since 2000. But all he cares about, is money. Instead of retiring, he makes this documental out of it. Bon Jovi is not a band and it's not about music, it's all about money. It should be called Shanks' Bon Jovi.

I've done that with various jobs where I couldn't take the crap anymore. If Jon was concerned about fans and their money, he should have been more in touch with Richie long before Richie left instead of calling him his right-hand man and treating him otherwise. While Richie says he regrets how he did it, does Jon ever come out and say he regrets how he acted and changed the band to lead up to that point of Richie leaving?

All in all, miscommunication, but Richie should not be the fall guy. More than Richie had issues. And Jon changing the band changed jobs. I really would like to see Richie perform, but not with whatever BJ is.
Richie didn't show up during recordings so Jon let Shank play..sucks but i get it. That's also happend with Alec..when he couldn't play Jon let Hughy play. If your'e in the middle of a recording project ya must be there. Sambora was in and out rehab for a while. Jon andvthe band always had his back and helped him thrue it. If Sambora wasn't happy with the situation in the band he should have left earlier. And maybe it's me but every time i see Richie he talks like he's drunk and acting likeva 16 year old. Jon and the band grew up...seems Richie didn't.

Exactly Shanks wanted this all along. He took advantage of Richie's bad stuff happening and wormed his way in but now he needs to leave and let Richie come back so they can make great music again IF and that's a BIG IF Jon's voice will be good enough to tour!
