Richmond Virginia is best known as the capital of the old confederacy during the Civil War. Richmond is filled with historic sites, and interestingly, acknowledges it’s confederate past while also exhibiting progressive ideas throughout the city. There is a lot more to see. Hollywood Cemetery, Maymont, Belle Isle, hiking trails along the James River, the mansions along River Road, the quirky Cary Town, the breweries, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art etc. Lots to do in Richmond.

I had that same tour guide at 2:10 a couple weekends ago; I asked him about me spending the night in that master bedroom and he said "no." I plan on visiting as many of Virginia's "War Between the States" sites in the upcoming months as possible...I want to experience them before they're all destroyed. You didn't show us Hurricane Camille's high water mark (August 1969) inside Main Street Station.

Mayor Ray Nagin Stoney has only one thing in mind. To drag Richmond into the 21st-century by rmaking it into into a giant theme park dedicated to reliving slavery and Jim Crow.

They got rid of the best tourist attraction of Richmond . It was Monument Avenue . All of the statues of soldiers that fought for the South. People from all over the world visited Monument Avenue.

Imo, those statues should be in a museum. Given that the monuments there were of people who was okay with keeping a group of people oppressed and enslaved has to make the descendants of those people feel bad. It’s like glorifying them and why you don’t see places like Germany, for example, have monuments or statues dedicated to the Nazis or Hitler, but it’s still part of the history and taught. The balance should be museums since it is a part of the history.

@@ssjup81 I think the statues should have been left there and appreciated like earlier generations have done from over a century until todays worthless generation. They do nothing but complain and push crazy BS ideas on everybody. We have had laws for years and now we are starting all over again and people don’t know what a man is or a woman. The cities and town don’t even protect their public property anymore. Richmond Virginia destroyed a beautiful Monument Avenue and lost all kinds of tourism. Now they can’t get a casino in Richmond to pick up their tourism.

Given the title of this video, I was expecting an in-depth review of Richmond's role as the Confederate capital. Fortunately such was not the case as there is SO MUCH MORE to Richmond's nearly 300-year history than the four years of the Civil War. Richmond is an absolute gem of a city--- so beautiful and historic!! Thank you for this excellent tour of my favorite city!

@@ProjectGaiaTravelYou might want to consider a gorgeous neighborhood called "Windsor Farms" located in Richmond's West End. A community planned in the 1920s to resemble an old English country village, Windsor Farms contains two Tudor manor houses built in England in the 1500s (Virginia House and Agecroft Hall) plus two Colonial mansions (Wilton and Ampthill) dating from the 1700s. All were moved from their original locations to Windsor Farms. The creation of this neighborhood is a fascinating story that is seldom told!

Yes it is a very controversial topic and I've received a lot of conversation on both sides of the coin. It's always a difficult thing when exploring history, as to if things should be forgotten or removed because the actions of the time are not acceptable in the present day. For example, Rome has a dark past and their most famous generals are displayed.... maybe because the Civil War was more recent? Who knows but thanks for watching!

You wouldn't see a statue of Hitler in Germany. But there is nazi stuff in museums. So I think those statues should be taken down and put them in a museum. Not in the middle of the street.

@@ssjup81It was Americans against Americans and slavery was legal in those days even in other countries. It’s still legal in other countries and I don’t see people going to those other countries complaining about slavery today.

It still kills me that the "Confederate flag" is allowed to fly over any ground in the U.S.A. It's not, nor has it ever been an approved national flag (it’s fact, look it up). It is just the “battle” flag of the Confederacy. It represented the confirmed enemy of the U.S. and a failed state that attempted the violent and seditious overthrow of the rightfully elected U.S. government. While I do not condone the destruction of any "Confederate" monument, statue or plaque. I do fully support that any that are able to be moved, be moved to a national museum in Richmond dedicated to teaching that the "stars and bars’ is hate speech, And how destructive racism, white nationalism, and replacement theory is and all the other ridiculous BS the hate mongers preach. I respect your choice to make this video. However I believe it is woefully misinformed and that it glosses over the real implacations of it's history of hate, violence and the incredible damage it did and continues to do, to our country. But in turn you must accept the differing opinions of those that disagree.

Hi Livia, The purpose of the Confederate flag is to show how Richmond served as the capitol of the Confederacy in the 1860s. It is not to parade the Confederacy in any way. I'm a strong believer in exposing the past and learning from it, rather than hiding what really was. Your not showing how disgusting the streets are. I live near Richmond. It's an absolute mess. Huge crime rate, nasty housing, shit people, river is horrendous. Good for you for making it look good. But if your thinking of visiting Richmond, save your time and money. Don't go
