This is my fav so far - Rubinstein's was my favorite after I'd heard Lupu and Serkin who in my opinion both, as you said, "took the 'giocoso' too much too heart." But this Richter interpretation is exactly what I was looking for. I love Richter.
I just listened to Rubenstein playing this and then Richter. Much as I worship Rubenstein, I really prefer Richter's. So gentle, playful, yearning, a bit more intense where needed. All good. I'm working on this piece myself.
Rubinstein tookthe "giocoso" too much to heart. I dislike Rubinstein's interpretation of this divinely beautiful Intermezzo, and love Richter's. Brahms sent his last three opuses to Clara Schumann with the words "Ich schicke Dir die Wigenlieder meine Schmerzen." "I am sending you the cradle songs of my sorrows."
