Rick and Morty: Who's the Real Beth?

Rick and Morty’s Beth Smith is a character full of contradictions, shaped by the trauma of being abandoned by Rick as a child. Support ScreenPrism on Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=7792695
Paradoxically, Beth’s identity struggles eventually lead her to become exactly the person she wanted to be all along.

The "clone problem" is intentionally left open. There is no hidden clue, no subtle detail, no explanation that makes it all suddenly make sense. It's useless to craft theories going into that direction, and you are also missing the actual point if you think that's what it is about.

I was definitely of the opinion that the reason Beth goes back to Jerry over and over is because he's not her father. Rick could abandon her at a moment's notice, but Jerry is so pathetic and incompetent that he's reliable. He is a man she can love who's not good enough for her, so she's not afraid of him leaving her. Thus, he is a comforting thought. A loved one who will never leave her, thus acting as a safety net in her life where she fears abandonment.
@Museofmemory

Pretty much spot on.
@elevate07
@elevate07 6 лет назад
darkangel64593 really though we found out at the couples therapy episode. Jerry thinks of Beth as an actual goddess. And Beth requires attention all the time even if it comes from a pathetic slug man with zero spine. So even though they are toxic for each other their worst demonized visions of each other fulfills in need that they both think they have. Which ironically makes the marriage counselor tells them that their marriage shouldn't exist at all
@Museofmemory

darkangel64593 I'd say it's less "fulfilling a need" and more "enabling a behaviour".

Jerry also has the ability to be a "Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass" because he isn't smart. He won't overthink a situation when he sees those he loves are in danger. As shown when Rick Cronenberged the world, and when Jerry and Beth went to alien marriage counseling.

Yeah, that's a good point, I think I try to cut Beth slack based on her having less screen time than Rick. In season three there was a moment where she seemed to care about Summer, however I think that can leave a lot of mixed feelings; does Beth care about Summer or is it all just reaching ends to a means?

@Museofmemory
@Museofmemory 6 лет назад
The choice Rick offers Beth can be summed up along these lines; lose the safety net and live a great and (possibly) terrifying life, or cling to the security blanket and be forever mediocre, but at least content that it was her own choice rather than something imposed on her. It's silly to say that Beth could ever be entirely happy with Jerry, he does not possess the facility to satisfy her on any level. But that wasn't the point of Rick's choice. The point was removing the unbearable frustration of feeling trapped into her own life, which is what was driving her crazy. Still, there will always be a part of Beth that loves Jerry and a part of her that needs something more, and that won't be resolved by that one choice, not permanently at least. But having made that choice, she may at least understand her own internal conflict better, and find better ways of dealing with it.

This was such a great analysis! I love Beth and her struggle so much. It's this constant struggle of reality vs expectation and her reconciling with the aftermath. It's so uncomfortable, but very relatable to anyone who feels like their life took a turn they didn't intend. I like to think that Beth is who Rick could be if he'd allowed himself to be more vulnerable and put even a modicum of effort into his children. Like, still not happy the majority of the time and still very much a selfish jerk, but someone far less isolated and alienating, and with far more of a hopeful future.

Growing up, I was in a similar situation, so that video was particularly hard for me to get through. It was worth every minute though because the ending is so motivating and wholesome. Just a reminder to all those out there who live with absent and emotionally unavailable parents. The needy feeling of wanting to impress your parent (or parents) doesn't go away, but if you live with someone who really loves you, then it doesn't really have much of an impact on your life anyway because your SO will always be impressed with who you are because you're the one they fell in love with. That's why Beth would rather choose Jerry in the end, because despite all his flaws, Jerry's love is like a bandaid that fixes the feeling of emptiness left by Rick.

My assumption is the real Beth is the one who’s conscience would be transferred to the clone in case she died, so one of the Beths would have to die in order for the real Beth to be revealed. That or Rick is really such a horrible father he wouldn’t care if his real Beth lived or died (but that may be counterintuitive cuz he did put the device on both Beths’ necks.

Beth and Rick are my favourite characters If Rick is the most funny character, then Beth is the character who makes my eyes watery the most. "He is not coming back, is he?" She is acting so tough and strong when it comes to her own ambitions to achieve and Jerry's inferior state in a family, but she is extremely vulnerable before Rick. Such contrast catches my heart.

I don't think Beth did clone herself. I think what she likes about Jerry is that he's genuine, honest, and affectionate, as opposed to Rick, who's emotionally distant, manipulative, and cold. She knows she can trust Jerry; that's why he's the person she goes to for help when she has her identity crisis. I do think she was originally just looking for someone safe, and that she kind of stumbled into finding what she needed there... Not to say that they're exactly good together, either, but what I mean is, I don't think that what Beth really values in Jerry is what she was looking for in him originally. As for identity being a construct... I don't think that's necessarily true. I mean, sure, all of who you are comes from your genes and environment, so who you are is a construct in that sense. But, while we all have ideas about who we are... For self-aware people, those ideas aren't what you've constructed but what you've noticed. I'm neurotically aware of my emotions and beliefs, my motivations, my strengths and flaws, all that. I can't escape being aware of it, because... how could I not be, when it's right there in front of me? Although it's not something that can be summed up in a few adjectives, I have a strong sense of identity, and I'm very comfortable in my own skin. I do make value judgments about my attributes, but it's based on how they affect myself and others. And when I fall short of my own ideals... I can't lie to myself about it, because I can't avoid seeing the truth.

Probably yes. Morty constantly is on the limit of his capacities (not only of his mind, also stress, emotions, ...) which is a thing probably everyone would be if he travelled with Rick. But unlike Jerry he can be brave if he has to, accepts that he isn't up every problem and accepts how weird the world can be. And he enjoys watching weird shows from all dimensions. Most people are Mortys or perhaps also Summers. Jerrys probably wouldn't watch Rick&Morty.

This is a show where I can honestly say I love every character. I actually do think it's the clone and Rick just said it wasn't so Beth didn't have to come back. He knows he has to play along, even let Jerry back in so the cover isn't blown. I can definitely see someone thinking they want a certain life forever then losing their current situation and realizing it's what they always wanted, but I think Beth is so much like Rick she can use the clone as a way to not feel guilty about leaving her family. Whether it's for a bit or forever. But I don't know and I don't think any of us can really know until we see her in the new episodes. I love your videos. They're very in depth and show the genius of the creators.

You guys should make a video about Alexander Payne’s movie Election!!! Beth’s character reminds me of Tracy Flick
