Greeny and the crew react to Rick Carlisle's comments on small market teams not getting as many officiating calls. Greeny says Carlisle is feeding the hive of people that think sports are rigged by saying that. He emphasizes that games are not fixed, leading to a long discussion about small market vs big market teams in today's NBA. Also touched on how bad the Pacers are defensively.

Not fixed, but the NBA definitely wants certain teams to win, for ratings and viewership of course. Come on, every one knows that NBA wants that juicy Celtics vs Lakers finals for years now. NBA definitely preferred NY vs IND for the history as compared to PHI vs IND, and they would certainly prefer a Bos vs NY ECF instead of the BOS vs IND.

If the NBA wanted the Knicks to be good, they would have fixed the draft in Knicks favor. The Knicks have never moved up in the draft. By the way the western conference has 3 small market teams in Denver, Minnesota and OKC. The difference is that they are all way better and play defense. Rick should teach his team to play defense and hit their free throw shots. That is why they lost.

@@Mr.Thomas_AndersonI don't disagree with you that as a network, they show a favoritism towards big markets and certain historic players. However, that does not mean that what I said can't be true as well. By using provocative words in the video title, like "conspiracy", that is sure to garner views - which is the overall goal of the station and everyone on there. And just some additional thoughts: Greeny may have this opinion that what Carlisle said was a bad thing, but that doesn't mean that everyone on the channel is gonna share that opinion. Surely, some are going to take the other side and say Carlisle had a point. (It makes for good on-air debate.) And lastly, if ESPN didn't cover this story as a big deal and it appeared like they were trying to downplay it, we would all then be saying the same thing that ESPN is in favor of big markets by not providing this story proper coverage and consideration. So basically, most of us already share the opinion that ESPN shows favoritism (as well) and we would be saying this regardless of how they covered this incident.

ESPN never addresses their relationship with MSG/CAA; so comparing other markets to this specific market is just not an apples to apples comparison. I think it’s pretty obvious there is favoritism for the Lakers and Knicks. The Lakers take more free throws than any other team year in/year out - that’s a fact, and can’t be argued. Knicks are in bed with ESPN and Disney, and are the largest market i.e., most money on the line, and yes - there is an officiating issue. First of all, it's not at ALL laughable that the league might have deliberate ways of influencing officiating so that it is biased in favor of big market teams. And it doesn't have to be as obvious as Adam Silver getting on a conference call and telling all the refs, "Alright guys, you know what to do! Throw it for New York!" It could just be doing statistical analysis to know what biases refs have already and being sure to assign refs to certain games at certain times of the year accordingly. It could be masking influence behind other officiating guidance at specific times. And that's to say nothing of the general question of bias that refs absorb from hundreds of cues picked up from league officials, messages, etc. If the league really wants to clear up the question of bias, then hire an outside firm to do thorough statistical analysis to see what officiating biases DO exist.

It's not laughable when you see it in corrupt politicians and big corporation favoritism and even more money is riding there. It's laughable to think about it in the way Mike describes it, but it's very likely that there is favoritism for certain scenarios in NBA playoffs. The thing is that now Pacers will get some calls at home, but you won't hear Carlile complaining about when they are the beneficiary. You have to advocate better officiating in general, but then you make an enemy of everyone. It's tough to be mentally ready to play when you know the game is rigged and you see it unfold. These guys have no idea what that feels like, but dismiss it so quickly. Knicks have up 121 which is also not good defense, but they won and no one is taking about it. Pacers could have also won those game if the officiating was better. Don't cover up one problem (officiating) with another (Pacers play) These guys are so afraid to even play a devil's advocate on this course it might mean their job. Sorry state of sports reporting

The ratings are down Greeny across the board in the playoffs. This is why the NBA is seen as too top heavy as once the superstars are eliminated nobody cares to tune in and watch anymore. That's a big problem as it means the sport cannot be self-sustaining in so called "dry talent" dark age times as this is what's happening in baseball and hockey right now. Even the NFL is having this issue right now.

Brunson is a great player but falls down on the ground like no other. If Hali fell like Brunson when he got shoved he would got the call. Knicks are better actors but they rebound better and hit freethrows. They play better defense and these were bigger issues that the refs.

The NBA rigging the playoffs to get big market teams to the Finals is easily proven false! The Knicks, Nets, Lakers, Clippers, Bulls, n 76ers would be in the Finals yr in yr out. The Spurs don't win 5 championships alone kills the argument

Carlisle was not wrong, but his lousy coaching, bad rotations, and no adjustments mid game or at least game to game is why Pacers lost games 1 and 2.Before the series my prediction was Pacers in 6.I was going on that mainly because of NY lack of health and playing their players heavy mins against a team that runs just doesn't bode well.Anunoby got injured,Brunson is hampered to back up my case.Knicks if they lose game 4 which is likely, they will lose this series, because Pacers will at least win 1 game in NY whether it's game 5 or game 7.Pacers only team that hasn't lost at home in the playoffs and I just don't see it happening against a depleted Knicks team.

They only whine like this when a big market wins a game. The NBA bends over backwards to glaze these small market teams. Carlisle is being out coached and doesn’t want anyone to notice.

Celtics, Cavs, Pacers, Knicks, Nuggets, Timberwolves, Thunder & Mavericks aren't huge markets, especially since one of the Celtics or Knicks will be eliminated. I know we like to talk about freethrows or calls or whatever, but that's just bad reffing I think. If anything the new CBA helps small market teams compete against the big spenders in the Dubs, Lakers, Clippers, Heat, Celtics, etc. So I think that the league can improve referees & replay, but the Pacers are losing fair & square.

These analysts always huff and puff when it comes to people saying what Carlisle he's right. There's concrete proof over the season and years. You say you want to grow the league more then don't show teams in a small market even when they're doing great. I live in Florida and have seen more games with the Lakers when they were losing and in 13-15 place than I had the hawks ,magic or pelicans when they had a better record. ESPN pushes the agenda for teams in big markets for making the playoffs, they made the case for some teams that's not big market being kicked out of the league at one point, they make the case for great players who don't play for big markets to sign with big markets like new York and LA. And now you're saying there's no collusion? Even if there's not there's a lot going on with the refs, analysts and the head officials to make it seems like there is.

This is why people don't watch the games unless you're a true-blue fan of the sport/product itself as nobody can market it with superstar sports celebrity power here now. This is why the whole debate of what sport can self-sustain a period of no superstar markets personalities is more of a justifiable issues with sports fans in general wanting the superstar players winning it all vs rotting for the jerseys or the improvement of the game itself for everyone here to get younger people into the sport if they are in high school or in middle school.

Sheesh. Call it fixed or whatever. Fact is officials always favor specific players/teams this shouldnt be a surprise to anyone who actually watch games. This has been the case since the beginning of time. Its just more prevolent now even tho we have better technology to assist officiating. Why do you think their defense suck all of a sudden? Its a chain reaction.

I don't disagree that people may see Coach Carlisle's remarks and hear what they want to hear, that the NBA is rigged. But unlike players flashing dollar signs at refs, directly accusing them of being on the take, Coach Carlisle's comments hint at something that happens all the time in life and we are all susceptible to it. It is called implicit bias. Everyone knows that good-looking people have, on average, an easier time in life and can get away with more. There is no conspiracy to make that happen. It is human nature. There is a reason that QBs are, on average, better looking than most other players. As good-looking kids they are given more opportunity. All Coach Carlisle is doing is calling out that big market teams are better-looking. Stars get the calls. The glitz and glam does impact people, even though it is NOT a conscience thought. Being a referee in the NBA is the hardest job in the world and there are lots of things that affect their ability to call the game. There is NO CONSPIRACY to get the Knicks into the next round. The NBA did not tell anyone to do anything. Much like they will not tell them to make more calls for the PACERS. But you know what, when you make bad calls and everyone knows and then your boss is told about them publicly, you are probably going to lean the PACERS way, even if it is not a conscience effort. It is the job of the coach to influence the referees. It happens all the time during the game and at pressers. Coach just pushed it a little more but he never said the league was conspiring to beat them.

The consistency shown by the refs - of missing calls or making really bad calls in favor of the Knicks, is a big problem. The Repeated pattern of decisions by the refs needs to be reviewed and addressed by the the league

I disagree. Case in point: the suspension of Draymond Green in game 5 of the 2016 Finals. Blantant manipulation by the league to A). Extend the series, and B). Reward Lebron for his impact on the league' revenue. Disgusting and reprehensible.
