Rick Dees on KHJ, June 12, 1979

This is an air check of Rick Dees on KHJ towards the end of KHJ's time as a top 40 station, Dees was still there when the station flipped to country. Headlines on June 12, 1979 include the death of John Wayne, an airline hijacking and reports of the NFL's Colts moving to LA.
I have edited this to make it seem more complete but most of the original ads and part of the newscast are missing.

I was there. My first job in radio was Associate Producer (I answered the phones & screened calls) for Rick from March - December of 1979.

The man was a master. Watching him work, studying his technique taught me more about the execution of morning radio than 4 years of media and communications college courses could have ever taught me. It was the greatest learning experience I could have ever asked for. And I was getting paid to do it!

Loved Rick Dees on KHJ. I listened to him every morning as I worked for a courier service. Great times.

Wow man such a great moment in time .. such fun times and happiness .. just hearing the call letters "K-H-J" brought back such good memories .. it just makes me happy. I felt really safe in the world at the time .. no worries .. just so nice .. i know it sounds crazy but if you were around at that time listening to KHJ .. you know what I'm talking about .. hard to explain.

these song selections capture this era perfectly. disco gets a ton of pub but my memory of the late 70s is songs like the first few in this clip: highly produced pop, aka "marina/yacht rock". These songs are NEVER played anymore. Good to hear them again.

Rick was not only a great personality. But Just a all around nice guy. Little story..... I was working for Anheuser-Busch at the time and A/B was a big sponsor of Los Angeles' Cinco De Mayo party at Lincoln Park in East LA. Well KIIS FM (where he was at this time) was a huge sponsor and Rick was the emcee for the weekend....... So we get this walkie talkie message from the VIP entrance that the "Yellow Jackets" have some guy named Rick Dees trying to get into the VIP lot....LOL. So my brother hopped into the golf cart got him in, parked his car and we all had a great laugh back stage. Such a great guy and we had some great laughes that weekend.

I was curious about the "clicks" too. They add to the ambiance of the era. candlefm you are very talented to pull this off so seamlessly. I grew up listening to Rick Dees on WHBQ (Memphis) and was searching for a full show. All I found were air checks. I wish you would do your Cakewalk Pyro 2004 magic with the July 11'th 1977 WHBQ air check. Thanks for posting. For 38 minutes and 44 seconds I was "blended" back in time to once again relive my childhood memories. EPIC!

It's total garbage, and for decades. It started getting bad towards the very end of the 80's and it became banal and unlistenable in the 1990's, so much so that I stopped listening to mainstream music. 60's, 70's, and 80's were the best.

Amazing you can hear all the clicks from the 45 record on "Just When I needed You Most". Surprised the song hadn't been dubbed to a cart. Sounds unprocessed, more like it was recorded in the radio studio instead of off the radio.
@candlefm
@candlefm 8 лет назад
+Doug Daniels Media I Wouldn't want to mislead anyone so let me explain that the recording i acquired of this air-check, probably a decade ago, had all the music save for the intros and endings cut out, using my own music collection I blended the music back in using "Cakewalk Pyro 2004" a now obsolete and unsupported software that I still use because I could never find another program as good. So you are correct that is a 45 record. I'm not sure what you mean by "dubbed to a cart", my radio work was on a non-professional level.
@dougdanielsmedia3472
@dougdanielsmedia3472 8 лет назад
+candlefm "Dubbed to cart" means that radio stations, on the whole, didn't play "records" from turntables by 1979. The songs were "dubbed/recorded/copied" from the 45 or 33 to something we called a "cart" - which was radio's version of an 8-track. By dubbing the record/45 to a tape "cartridge" you would hear pristine audio over the radio station. The record/45 would be archived and shelved unless the tape broke somewhere down the line. That's why I was surprised to hear the clicks and pops of the song - because you wouldn't normally hear that. Thanks for the information - and the air check. Love it.
@traxonwax
@traxonwax 5 лет назад
Some stations were not able to use carts on a regular basis. It depended on the format. If it was a Top 40 or any station that had a strict limitation on what was played, a station could have a couple hundred carts right there in the MCR. Now a station such as an album oriented station where the djs still had some say in what they played, whole albums would be impossible to have in Cart. There wouldn’t be enough room left for the DJ to work in. I remember whrn Beds Are burning was.huge, I remember the DJ saying that he hoped they would have a CD copy because they already had worn out 8 copies of the song. Lol Carts were mostly used on AM stations. Since most Top 40 stations up u til.the mid 80s were on AM, that worked out nicely.

@@candlefm Yup, I instantly "heard" the scenario you used in order to put the whole "Patchwork-Of-Radio-History" together; quite a crafty digital software morphing job!!! (And I REALLY mean; no sarcasm, good brother.) I started my career in broadcasting right about that same year, 1979 and "air checks" were just that, "telescoped snippets of ONLY the disc jockey's voice". In essence, there are two dynamics going on here. TECHNICALLY: Whenever the disc jockey keyed his microphone on, this would instantly mute the control room speaker system AND "remotely" start either a stereo cassette deck (sometimes wired to record dual-channel mono) or a 1/4" 2 track reel to reel recorder/reproducer deck, in the more higher profile network radio stations. PURPOSE: These "air checks" were used primarily so that the "boss" (programming manager or program director) could later listen to these tapes cassettes in his personal office...(in most cases, they used properly manufactured, retail grade cassette tapes, hence the VERY, VERY poor quality)...to constructively critique the on-air staff, make suggestions, recommendations & give praises...OR...critically admonish the personality, requiring changes in his/her delivery, or dismiss the disc jockey, if their delivery was either not up to par and straying away from the branding of the format of the radio station. So...there you go...boys & girls in radio history class...we learn something new everyday! (...that NOBODY under the age of 50, probably doesn't give a rat's hoot about, nor cares of it's significance or sees absolutely ANY importance of it's viability...) Thar ya have it...coming from an old radio fart like me! BolsaChicaRadio ============== Anthony Ochoa KRHC, KWST, KTSJ, KYMS, KWVE, KKLA, KUSC, The Salem Radio Network 1979-2019 (retired)

So many good memories. I think Rick Dees actually started his career at WSGN am 610 in Birmingham, Alabama. I was a dj at a couple of small am stations in the 1980's WQMS/WGTT am 1500 Alabaster, Al and WBYE am1370 Calera, Al. I remember the carts, bulk erasers, production, and old Russco turntables. I'm surprised by how much the news guy Terrence McKeever sounded like the legendary William Conrad in his role as the announcer on the old Bullwinkle and Rocky Show. At first I thought it was the same guy. I don't know if Conrad was McKeever's radio voice inspiration, but if so, he nailed it. Spoiler alert: The Colts didn't move to LA and Abner Doubleday didn't invent baseball.

Rick was still somewhat of a "newbie" at this point, not only at KHJ, but LA radio; having been hired in April 1979. I don't remember who the PD was that brought Rick to LA from Memphis, but Shaune McNamara was the Music Director at KHJ. She would go on to work with, and marry, the Real Don Steele.
