Rick, I’d be interested to see what happened next. Did your 9 iron need adjusting, and did you have other issues with the 3 iron. Give us an update when you figured it out. It would give us all an insight into what to look for when we have distancing gaps. Great content again, and I really appreciate your 2 videos a week!

A gapping session like this is extremely important, one of the key ways I dropped my handicap from 25+ to ~10 in two years. Also, do a gapping session just with wedges doing partial shots to create a wedge/distance matrix. Knowing a 50% 58 degree goes 50 yards, a 50% 54 degree goes 62 yards, etc, is incredibly important for those approach shots. I'm long off the tee so I am regularly left with 20-90 yard approach shots and building the wedge matrix was invaluable.

I recommend gapping clubs and found it very beneficial. I recently had fittings with Callaway, Mizuno, Ping and PXG. I ended up with the new Ping G430 Pwr Spec irons. I am very happy with the gapping results. On the course, the distance between clubs are quite accurate. Very pleased. Nice video Rick.

Loved seeing our gappings be so similar. It made me feel a lot better about my distances. After watching too much RU-vid golf I start thinking everyone hits their pitching wedge 165 yards on avg. instead of a 3 and 4 iron I game a 5 and 7 wood which help tighten my 240-190 gappings. My 5 iron is my 185 club, 7wood is 200, 5 wood is 215, 3 wood is 230. Off the deck averages. And I don't worry about so many mishits with a 3 & 4 iron, not to mention the steeper landing angles with the 5 & 7 woods

That G430 Max 3 wood needs to be in the flat-minus adapter setting. It's just so clear it's launching too high, spinning too much and drawing too much for Rick ... and the flat-minus setting would be a huge help to fixing all of those things.

When you see the numbers put up together like this, you notice how the roll-out (difference between carry and total distance) increases quite steadily through the bag, by about one extra yard per club. It's something I often fail to account for properly when I'm using wedges and lofted irons around the green for chipping, which can lead to overshooting the hole.
@alexlc1989

I'm getting advice from everyone 🙄 which I appreciate, but ugh. So can I ask here: Should I get "better" (like 2 years in) before purchasing a good set of clubs OR purchase good (maybe used) clubs now, because it will help while learning. Thank you. Just had first lesson this past Saturday. He recorded my swing and then we broke it down. He said my Basics are okay but I need repetitions and go for "Pure" contact at 50% and then I can start introducing more club speed and hitting harder. I was just trying to SMASH every shot and well, it was ugly. Basically short and down the middle to start, distance will come later. And he told me to leave that LONG game to the young guys and showing off. That my short game will win the matches. @@enemyvirus

@@robertflint4115 You should absolutely pick up new irons ASAP. If you have mismatched 15 year-old clubs, you will never get "good" and will likely become more frustrated than anything. It's clear that if you have a slow swing speed and are new to the game, super game improvement clubs should be what you look for. My favorites are TaylorMade M2 or m4 (about 4-5 years old), Callaway Mavrik (3 years old), or Tour Edge C523 ($559 on their site right now, new but last year's model). There's also a Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Iron-Wood Set for $699 where each iron is basically a mini hybrid. Really easy to hit.

WS CB Irons still have classic lofts as far as I know. That might be why the gapping is different that what Rick is used to. I also play WS irons (V6 FG Tour forged) and the lofts are classic. For example, I could carry my former 7i about 180yds (Taylormade RBZ, 30.4 deg loft on 7i, more modern). My current WS 7i (34 deg), 160 - 162yds carry is pretty much stock. Even though the lofts only vary between 1 and 4 degrees, it can have a big impact... but control over distance for me! Any day!

I have found that even the highest quality club(head)s will have loft and lie issues. Getting them checked and properly adjusted is just as important as getting a good fitting. And - as others have noted - ya gotta know if the lofts overall are traditional (old school) or more modern (i.e. delofted) to begin with. Um, a good player recognizes this......

Adjusting your gap wedge or sand wedge should be based on your pitching wedge loft. If it's 46* I would keep the gap wedge at 50* and adjust the sand wedge to 54* or 55*. If the PW is 47* or 48* then move that PW down to a 52*. That's what I did and I maintained the proper yardage gap and didn't really have to adjust much with the loft change for short game shots. I went from a 48* PW to a 46* PW with my newer irons. I changed my GW to 50* and SW to 54* to accommodate the different lofted PW.

Knowing your yardages on stock shots is very useful if you hit a lot of stock shots on the course. If a person gets out on the course and then is going for fades, draws, knockdown shots, muscling a shot, everything but stock shots then things get much less precise.

Hey Rick - besides gapping (i.e. loft) - did you know that changing the lie angle changes the length of the club? It's only marginal, but a 2 degree change in the lie angle can be just enough to make a noticeable change in the length, and hence the heft and feel of the clubhead. So, in a good fitting the lie angles of each club should be included. Then, if an adjustment is needed it should be done BEFORE the club is assembled. Just sayin'......

If PW is going 126, a 9 iron wouldn’t typically go 150 due to gapping. The loft seems appropriate, only because I hit similar distances. My PW goes 124, 9 goes 136, and 8 goes 150. I’m definitely not a pro golfer, nor do I claim to be, but the rest of the distances make sense.

I think your disparity is between your 50° and PW. If you widen that gap, then base everything off that new PW yardage, you should be right at your numbers you usually expect. 119 to 126...PW should be around 130 based off your 50°. That'll put your 9i into the 140-145 range.

Makes a huge difference on distance when you play real solid irons compared to those hollow body irons. Hollow body irons will give more distance but you definitely lose consistency. 160’s for your 7 iron carry is more realistic. You should switch to a very soft ball as well. Sacrifice that extra roll out distance for more control. You would be surprised with the total distance and carry distance. There would only be a few yards roll out which is perfect for hitting greens if you hit the carry numbers consistently.

Seems like a high launch from those irons. 25 from a 9 iron seems just a tad high. Great for decent angles.

In Arizona we lose about 10 yards in the winter and gain it back in the summer .. some summers the balls fly

Would like to know what the factory lofts are. Maybe the gap in loft matches up with the gap in distance.

Thinking that 3 iron could change to utility iron like the p790 or ping Icrossover ... Might be a little more consistent too

How did you decide on such a difference in club makes and specific models??

Boy does this put in perspective how bad I am with my clubs and the efficiency of them. I know my lofts are a bit stronger than yours. But my 5 iron goes 210 and my driver only goes 265. Standard 5 iron Paradym, and Callaway Rogue ST driver in 9 degree (draw setting)... Sheesh I need to work on hitting the center of the face.

Really interesting watch this, I have done this myself recently after being fit for new clubs and our yardages are very similar most withing 2-4 yards but as soon as you get to driver I lose 25 yards on you ?? why would this be the case, I'd consider my driving good, I spin it a little more around 2400 but surely that's not 25 yards loss ?

Distance all depends for me. If I’m 150 out I can either blade a sand wedge or chunk a 3-wood.

I had my 56 bent to 55 and closed that gap a bit and have 5* between my 3 wedges

Not a criticism but Rick normally tries to shape the ball out on the course but, in this test, he was hitting everything straight down the middle. Surely that'd affect the distances?
