I think Alan Watts put it succinctly when he said: "Psychedelic experience is only a glimpse of genuine mystical insight, but a glimpse which can be matured and deepened by the various ways of meditation in which drugs are no longer necessary or useful. If you get the message, hang up the phone. For psychedelic drugs are simply instruments, like microscopes, telescopes, and telephones. The biologist does not sit with eye permanently glued to the microscope, he goes away and works on what he has seen..."

I have tremendous respect for Professor Strassman. Years ago I underwent psychotherapy at the Berkeley Hypnotherapy Center. Much of the benefit of those sessions came from the voice of my therapist -- he was soft-spoken and he communicated wisdom in a patient and caring manner. This was an important in establishing trust. Professor Strassman has that same kind of voice. I would not hesitate to be part of any DMT research, as a clinical subject under his supervision.

Terence Mckenna gave Tibetan Buddhist monks DMT and they confirmed that it brought them to a similar "bardo" state, or immaterial realm that we fall into between reincarnations. When it comes to spirituality they are both equal, everything you do is a spiritual path as we are naturally spiritual beings having a human experience. As long as we are loving, sharing, compassionate and thankfull we are doing good for all existence and good for ourselves.

Pure meditation is like finding a way to walk through your inner gates. Very healthy but drawn out. The psychedelic path is kinda like blowing down the gates with a cannon. Can be very dangerous if one hasn't faced serious turmoil or done copious amounts of spiritual study.

When I wrote this I was lost. I guarantee you the onl true way is in Christ. All meditation and psychedelic drugs lead you too is spiritual turmoil. The truth is that we are the creation of God, and are his children. He loves us, but due to our sinful and evil nature(caused by The Fall) we are derserving of righteous judgement. That is wherre Jesus Christ comes in. His blood washes away our sin. The Holy Spirit come into you when you accept Christ. YOu begin to realize the true meaning of life and purpose to existence. It's a lot simpler than you think actually. IT's actually so simple that a child can easil grasp it. Yet so complicated that men can spend their whole lives studying it. The only peace to be had is the peace given to us by Jesus Christ. The only knowledge and wisdom to be gained is the knowledge and wisdom of Christ. I urge you to get a King James Bible and start reading. True understanding starts there. Have a wonderful day and God Bless brotha.

Yes, it is. I was ordained for 2 years in Thailand at a place where we considered perhaps brewing mushroom tea during some future meditation retreat. Never came to pass, but it was interesting to be around folks monks that would consider it. I've often thought of ordaining again. Unfortunately, conservatism is usually overwhelming. Not that I think entheogens are necessary, but can be a help. And in such an environment....the potential for benefit is...High.

Like all things drugs are empty of self nature, and as you say monks realise this. Buddhism basics on emptiness isn't it. drugs alone are not the experience, the brain alone is not the experience, consciousness alone is not the experience, they are all empty of individual nature, hence our true self is the combination of all of these, whatever experience that may be, any conceptual time, any conceptual place. love life :)

Buddhism basics would say that the view of the self being a combination of those things is a wrong-view, because those things combined is what creates our idea of being. Since this would be a conditioned phenomena, it is impermanent. Since it is impermanent, it is suffering and/or unsatisfying. Since it is suffering, it is not the self. "Just as when, with an assemblage of parts, there's the word 'chariot', even so when the aggregates are present, there's the convention of 'living being.'" JM2¢
@tonbonthemon
@tonbonthemon 11 лет назад
The reason why monks don't take psychedelics (as monks) is because the psychedelic trip is so unreliable for insight. The senses are distorted, there's an overly pleasant feeling going through the body (sensual pleasure is the cause of desire), and the mind is going nuts. Meditating while sober is the most reliable way to insight, however slow it may be. It's better to have a clear, straight mind than a wild mind.
@squamish4244
@squamish4244 6 лет назад
I think it is not so clear-cut. I think that psychedelics can possibly have an even more profound effect on people who have already done a great deal of stabilization and purification but have simply been unable to attain a breakthrough. There are so many meditators out there who have been working hard for ten or twenty years - or longer - and while much has changed, much stubbornly refuses to change, they have never had a breakthrough and they are getting tired and burned out. A careful psychedelic experience can provide the powerful insight that, having already laid the foundation, they can quickly integrate and continue practicing, rejuvenated. I have heard such stories as this - and it also happened with me.
@niktak4658
@niktak4658 6 лет назад
I think a hit or try of psychedelics is not bad. It gives you experiences that you do not know of, I feel like after people take them, they would be more inclined to meditate in the future.
@tuanjim799
@tuanjim799 5 лет назад
This is nonsense. People who take psychedelics for pleasure or fun are just flat-out misusing them. Just because a few people recklessly abuse/misuse a tool, that doesn't invalidate the importance and benefit of the tool itself. Psychedelics are not a hedonistic/recreational experience. In fact, they can even be quite jarring and unpleasantly intense at times. But when used properly, they almost always will provide the user with astonishingly deep and subtle insights into the nature of our reality. Psychedelics are what got me interested in meditation. I never gave any thought to meditation until I had a few life-changing psilocybin trips. Those experiences made me into a spiritual person, and clarified my vision in ways that I'm still benefiting from to this day.
@craighicksartwork
@craighicksartwork 5 лет назад
DMT can be one of the most insightful experiences of a human being's life. It doesn't give you falsehoods or make your brain go loopy like LSD can but instead just takes you to another world where you are witness. You are completely lucid the entire trip.

read in comments that DMT and meditation is the same.... yeah right... saying DMT and meditation is the same is like saying doping and not doping is the same... 1 is a chemical substance which brings those results for a certain period of time and has many side effects, you are controlled by the substance and the more you take the more you fuck your body up, the other is a controlled state which you reached through personal effort and can have it any time you want without any side effects but only benefits, so not only is it not the same but it's the exact opposite spectrum... and i am not against drugs, i have taken drugs when i was young and as rick says here it was the very reason i entered a spiritual path so i can have those experiences without the need of external triggers, chemical and TOXIC external triggers which fuck up your body and melt away your brain the more you take them... so yes drugs can help to get a glimpse and open your eyes and motivate you, but that's it, it's just a preview of what someone can experience if they meditate long enough, and then go higher and higher coz as beautiful as a DMT experience is compared to what we can experience through our 5 senses in the physical realm, it just scratches the surface of what is possible, of what is out there... also, i never heard about terence giving a monk DMT but i watched dharam das' story where he gave his spiritual master MEGA doses of LSD and nothing happened coz advanced masters have full control over their body and mind, they can go into those states in a moment and back and control everything about it, by this showing how much superior it is to reach there and beyond through meditation but as in everything else in life people don't wanna put in the time, they want shortcuts, even though they know very well the dangers and side effects of it, but it's so damn sweet and fast that it's difficult to say no and go the hard way with years and years of trying to control and still the mind to be able to rise above physical body consciousness and have those experiences

@@Buddhist_Philosopher i don't think so, they all show that they are interested in spirituality coz of the names and descriptions they are using, but as so many people they don't wanna put in the time to get there on their own, instead they choose a quick trip to the other side and then continue with their mundane lives... and i don'rt blame them, it's very very difficult to get the same results through spiritual practice, and only a handful of people in this world have dedicated their lives to spirituality so much that they can have those kind of experiences through meditation, all the rest live out their lives not even realizing there is more to it then what the eyes can see.. but we all will go back, so everyone will eventually in some life choose spirituality when they are ready for it and tired of hunting physical desires...

Oh, I can guarantee that psychedelics were the impetus for 90% of Buddhist practitioners becoming just that - Buddhist Practitioners. This is fact and I don't think most would have any problem admitting it. Buddhism is simply too difficult a practice to undertake it on a lark. I might be able to think of a handful who continued taking psychedelics infrequently after receiving vows, but not many. A lot of my practice was focused on trying to stabilize my mind from the hits it had taken from psychedelics. I sure as hell wasn't trying to rescramble it.

Compared to where meditation can get you and where drugs can get you is like comparing bacteria to a full fledged bird. No matter what kind of experience you get on drugs - it will still be only a huge rock in the path of enlightenment! There were so many enlightened beings that came on earth - they wrote so many books - shared knowledge - created new languages - new spiritual methods -- left their body in an intense way. Some even announced their death years/months/before - have excellent control over their body, mind and soul. None of the drug people showed us anything of value. If you want to know the difference between meditation and drugs then please tell me is there any drug invented by human beings that can bring back the memory of your past lives - the answer is NO whereas with meditations there are techniques like jati smaran where you can once again live those past lives!

The thing is that i know now for sure that drugs cannot be of anymore help to me because the experiences they give me is limited.

+Brandon King yeah the drugs don't do it because you have to get the message that's the psycadelics give you to reach enlightenment

@Josh from Duncannon Indeed. Would have never thought about meditating or understood it's significance if I didn't have psychedelic experiences. While it may be true that psychedelics may not bring about the transformation that meditative practices can, it certainly is capable of giving you profound insights depending on how you use them.
