This is a very interesting insight into song writing and rehearsal for the album Going For The One at Mountains Studios in Montreux, Switzerland 1976. Originally made to be a documentary and eventually scrapped this historical document is a must have for any serious collector of rare or vintage Yes material or any serious or enthusiastic fan of vintage progressive rock. In this clip we see Rick Wakeman transcend from light-hardheartedness to master song writer within minutes as we see one of the greatest keyboardists of all time build/improvise a beautiful sequence for the song Awaken.
If you are a collector or simply LOVE Yes and are looking for anything else Yes that's not available in stores I HIGHLY recommend this DVD set

Effin' hilarious. On a more serious note, it's interesting to hear earlier rough vocal takes; they reveal that Anderson made a decisive improvement to the phrasing of "like the time I ran away" in the song's final version.

I first saw (some of) this footage in 1995 as part of the History of Rock 'n' Roll miniseries. At the time, I was pretty blown away by Rick's innate prowess and his courage in using all those keys and synths at once. It's now 22 years later, and I'm still blown away by the whole thing.

This is one of my all-time favorite songs by Yes, and to see it broken down like this in it’s organic form with the amazing Rick Wakeman, I am just, no words. This is amazing for lack of better words

Apparently one difference he had with the rest of the band was that they were all new-age health-food nuts, while he was a Christian pub-food and lager drinker!

Interesting and maybe not known to some is that they often put down tracks solo and not as a full band. Right off the band would rehearse abit all together to see what songs to work on. Then do guide tracks or a rough cuts of the song then layer it from there individually. SO here is Rick laying down all sorts of stuff for Awaken's ending, many of which never made into the final mixdown. But thats what its all about record everything then piece it together during mixdown to see what works best. Its time consuming process and part of the reason their albums took so long to record and release.

Rick Wakeman .. the living embodiment of the sublime “AND” the ridiculous. 😀 What a keyboard player/musician. Like Jon Lord who said .. what’s the point re being in a band and assoc’ nonsense .. if you’re not having fun. They became friends towards the end of Jon’s life and both could easily do an hour of stand up comedy .. with the best of them. 🎭

Is this DVD an existing release? I I don't particularly like behind the scenes documentaries, except for perhaps: behind The Wall, because I was one of the fortunate few they got to see one of 12 or 13 performances in the US, at Nassau Coliseum, and it was number one of my top five concerts ever, I even decided that it surpassed Roger Waters stadium and Arena will concerts as great as they were. And I was curious to see why this tour to promote what was their new album the wall was only limited to just a few cities around the world. Clearly the technology today made it possible for Roger to do so many shows in many cities, with a much more sophisticated stage, sound, video projection and visual effects compared with the original Pink Floyd the wall tour in 1980. This video would be another exception because of the use of the cathedral organ during awaken and parallels, A tour that I also saw in concert from the fourth row of the old Philadelphia spectrum. Plus Yes is one.of my top five best bands

There's about a minute and a half of good stuff in this song and the rest of it is boring filler. Rick's "Look at me, I can play church organ in a rock song!" routine was already old. Yes hit their creative peak on "Relayer" (with Patrick Moraz on keyboards) and it was all downhill from there.
