Compared to what? It's crazy that Gervais is the first person you've found to share this opinion because I've heard it from everybody and his brother. But really. Humans suck compared to what? Animals? Because we can't live up to our own impossible moral ideals? Of course we can't. But I'll tell you who has far less developed moral sensitivities than us... every other animal we've ever encountered. We're not Gods. We're bloody animals ourselves. We happen to have some brilliant shit invented by a very small minority of brilliant people but most of us are mouth-breathing mongoloids running around with caveman brains and we need to be given a break for not being perfect. Are humans supposed to be awful because they're "ruining the environment"? Is nature supposed to be this wonderful thing that includes everything but humans? Nature isn't good or bad. It just is. Ebola is natural. Leprosy is natural. Earthquakes, super-volcanoes and asteroids are natural. Nature has no morality. A wolf will bite your dick off for fun and not even eat you. Cats cannibalize defective offspring. No other animals besides humans have ever given a moment's thought to something like protecting the environment. The general reason I'm told humanity is so terrible is because bad things exist. War, poverty, inequality--however one would define that. So I suppose a world in which humans weren't awful would be one in which none of these things existed. Humans are awful because we haven't built a perfect world yet? Well that's fucking hard but we're consistently improving by a number of metrics and I don't see anyone else helping. If you're gonna posit we suck compared to an ideal perfect version of humanity that doesn't exist in reality I won't argue that. But a lot of good people are working towards that and the only reason they even care and you even care is obviously because human's aren't completely terrible. I think we'll all be better off if we stop holding each other to unrealistic standards and love instead of hate, we're just stupid animals. Yes homo

We are putting so much pressure on people to be perfect when it isn't possible and it won't stop crap from happening. You can only control your own behaviour.

I personally don't agree with hating everyone but it's not hard to understand why people might go that route. It's kind of hard not to hate people sometimes when something really awful happens, there's just a fine line between hating people because they're awful and hating people because you yourself are awful.

The world is overpopulated, yes. That doesn't really apply to Gervais, however, seeing as he's from England. I respect his decision as well but the countries that suffer from hunger, poverty, famine and war, those are usually the overpopulated ones.

He criticizes (or he used to) overweight people because he himself used to be overweight. And in his case he would do it because he said it was down to laziness and poor eating habits on his part. What's hypocritical about criticizing a trait that you yourself suffer from. And for the record, he's not overweight any more because he started living a more healthier lifestyle (better diet, exercising). Now he jokes that he can't make fun of fat people anymore since he's not fat anymore himself

Robin Williams also used to tell some of his stand up's jokes, but it felt natural and funny. I think comedians also do it because they know how hot some of their latest jokes are, it's like 100% accurate shot.

Humans are basically a parasite on the planet, eating away at all the life/resources trying to sustain the WELL overpopulated species. We will continue to deplete resources at a much faster rate than they can regrow i.e. Trees, Fish, Cattle and wildlife destruction with the deforestation of upto 40 football fields each MINUTE(2017 study). Also the ridiculous amounts of carbon emissions we are pumping into our atmosphere are heating up the planet faster and faster, not going to explain much more but we are turning the planet into venus which has a surface temperature of around 400 Celsius
