I've often said-people like Ricky should be in charge of the country. The best comedians seem to have, not only high intelligence, but an advanced sense of justice and right and wrong. And are naturally altruistic. Unlike the clowns who run the UK and the States at the moment
LOVE the way he spoke with such sense and clarity, despite Colbert’s attempts to talk over and verbally bully Ricky with his ‘version’ of reality…he stayed calm and smashed it!❤
i loved his example of throwing the bible away and throwing alll, the science books aaway. and loved loved loved the you don't believe in 2999 gods. that was genius,
The fact he doesn’t ridicule people for their beliefs, he just outlines his own opinion and makes others take a moment to really think about there’s is what I like most
David Gritton I disagree. I think that he is just a normal, well educated person who actually cares about what he is learning and being told. The same as (hopefully) you and I.
I'd say it was just common sense, and learning to think for yourself, objectively, rather then believing things you're told that have no proof to back them up.
WE ARE ALL DYING! Every day is one day closer to our last day on earth. We should all try to live a great life like you ... but we are not all that lucky.
@John Digsby Firstly, you can't just replace a word in a sentence and think it will make sense, your doesn't. Secondly, you haven't provided any information to make that statement a point
@John Digsby You can but then anyone who's reading will think you're a moron for saying something that doesn't make any sense. If you don't explain what you mean you might as well stay silent
@Hammer 001 Your comment is a prime example of what happens when a really funny joke by Gervais is misused by an amateur to bludgeon another user for no good reason. Not only is it no longer funny, it makes you look like a moron for even trying to use it this way. Next time, -butcher- use your own material. In my eyes, the fact that you are so certain that gods do not exist is just as bad as those who have belief without sufficient and verifiable evidence. Indeed, you are claiming to be sure of something that is, by definition, unknowable. Granted, the probability is extremely low, but it simply cannot be zero. You thinking that it is zero is evidence that you are in that 'special' group that shouldn't be throwing shade on anybody else's maturity.
@Hammer 001 Error. You've wasted all that typing... I do not have a god to defend. I am also a non-believer. But, unlike you, I don't claim to KNOW the unknowable. The word atheist has evolved to mean non-belief in deities, not the archaic (and inaccurate) notion that it means that there is any kind of certainty about the non-existence of any deities at all. That last bit would be an error in logic. If any real evidence comes along someday, I may eventually be convinced that one exists, but if it is anything like the idiotic story books tell it, I won't be a fan.
@Hammer 001 Didn't read it, not gonna. You are probably right. There is probably no god whatsoever... But can you not understand that from a logical standpoint, it cannot, and will never be totally, provably impossible? To think otherwise is a logical fallacy. The fact that everything you mention is poppycock is true, but irrelevant. If the is a deity, then it can be proven. If there isn't, nobody can prove that. You can say how stupid all the stories are, and that can be fun, too... but it all boils down to facts. And you cannot prove a negative proposition. If you cannot understand that, you need to look elsewhere, I have no time for this bullshit.
@@BladeFitness Most religious people were forced to follow their religion since they were kids, they are adoctrinated to follow it, imagine if they didn't study and practice religion until they were 18 or so, very few people would be religious, that's why even smart and cultured people believe in that nonsense, they were simply adoctrinated since they were kids
Yeh your not wrong the world would be a different place without religion that's for sure. But it can help some people and give them hope. I went to a church of England school and had to sing prayer every morning. But it like ricky it didn't take long to see through the stories. I used to think of it as the same as santa when i was a kid you knew it wasnt real you just sort of went along with it.
Love Gervais and the knowledge and intelligence he shows in many different subjects. He’s not just a comedian like many comedians are he’s a world of knowledge too. Thank goodness he never went into politics and destroyed everything we love about him like Izzard did.
Irish Cathlic. He teaches fn cathlic shool on sundays ... on the other hand, he lost his father and 2 brothers in an airplanecrash when he was 10 or so. Maybe you ll draw the same lines as I did.
CrackityJones... I lost so much respect for Colbert in that argument. It's sad. So many reasons to like him: his Lord of the Rings fandom. His Neutral Milk Hotel fandom. His bear hatred. Now it's all muddled with the trinity crap. [shudder]
Is he? the way i see it, he's being a wingman so that ricky made a great response for it. I think stephen make an argument that most religion people would do. So that someone with that argument, will know this great response.
For 40 yrs i was the most devout hindu. I always was decent, helpful and had respect for all other religions as well. All this inspite my father abusing me like hell. Once my warrior mom.died and some other terrible experiences, i found peace in atheism. This video made a lot of sense and made me feel happy. Self worth and decency to me is everything. Every day i try. Cheers to all.

i think its absolutely brilliant, currently in love with viking type shows such as Vikings, The Last Kingdom, and its really frustrating how each religion says they have the true gods and every other religion is wrong, but now seeing Ricki's story about denying gods, shines a whole new light onto religions and how toxic they are to any but their own.
@@Kanosirus Also the part of if no religion or anything fictional can be taught to people under 20 years of age was good and it would mean far less if any would believe because by 20 you would have learnt and grown your own mind fully unlike when a child who takes all adults say inside of it and so when told things about god, you would just say what ever. Loads of what he says is brilliant, he doesnt not believe he just asks for proof to believe and what proof is there? None.
his biggest point is dont teach kids religion. let them think for themselves instead of believing what their parents or whoever tells them about religion at a young age
Colin Hanmer : here's the problem I have with your statement - atheism isn't a set of beliefs it's the absence of belief in gods. You can't "teach atheism" in the same way you can't "teach someone how not to play golf." You're not teaching some sort of anti religion, you're just not teaching them religion. Actually, you're just not telling them that those religious texts are 100% true. I have already talked to my son about religions. The different ones that are out there, where they come from and some of their histories. I just don't tell him that we know absolutely positively that there's a supreme being that doesn't want us to eat shrimp. And you know what, at 5yrs old he can already see through the bs.
"There are about 3000 Gods to choose from so, basically, you deny one less God than I do, You don't believe in 2999 Gods and I don't believe in just one more." GENIUS!:)
If you make your argument 'they believe in gods (plural). You'd have the beginning of an argument. Christian's have only ONE god. It's not the same as all the others.
Lol, you people have an answer to everything don't you? You just replace everything with 'christian god' and think it's done with that. It's all bullshit
So you explain the Greek Pantheon of gods and Norse mythology as just them mistaking the one true god for a bunch of different gods? You're absolutely mental my man.
@Billy But Whole It is totally different because that is HOW science works. Once people disprove something with the scientific method and discover that they are doing things wrong and that it really doesn't work, they SCRAP it, as you just said, it's not done anymore, yes, once people believed it but they know better now because of what? SCIENCE. Yet, that will never happen with religion. NEVER. Does prayer work? Did it ever work? No and no. Will people stop believing and give in? NOPE. They will keep reading a two thousand-year old book of mythology as if it were all true and ignore all of the slavery, genocide, wife-beating, rape, pedophilia, and the number of people god kills along with the insane things he does and commands people to do and keep right on praying. They have done scientific studies and proven that prayer does not work and the religious keep right on praying and as far as hurting people with wrong "beliefs" no one can hold a candle to the pain and sorrow and death brought about by religious belief!! Wow. And as far as the Big Bang, you weren't there either and through science, yes, science so far, the best theory is the Big Bang and scientists have reams of research to back it up. Scientists with IQs and education that would be double yours and mine put together! So, who am I likely to side with, some preacher who is reading the same old shit that is terribly crude and flawed and frankly, insane with terrible morality gleaned from ONE book, or thousands of years of research and development by hundreds of the greatest minds on earth who can prove most of what they do? Hmm, not a tough question at all...
@Billy But Whole Well, that was nonsense! You cannot be serious?! You honestly think that RELIGION and its morality is KEEPING people kind and thoughtful and restraining them from crime and keeping them in line and from doing the "wrong things?" The Bible has a terrible moral compass and the moral compass of most religious people is totally backward. People do have different genders than just male and female. Your sexuality is in your brain, not your genitals. There are gay people and the LGBTQIA community exists and is just fine and doesn't need the religious peoples' approval or disapproval and there is nothing wrong with love between two consenting adults in the privacy of their own bedrooms. The religious need to get their noses out of other people's love lives and stop being bigoted and cruel because of an old mythology that ignores all of its other stupid laws like mixing fibers and planting mixed crops, no one cares about those, but everyone wants to jump all over the gay thing. People just need to butt out and grow up. I don't care what any of my neighbours do in the sex lives whether they are gay or straight and neither should anyone else UNLESS it includes victims like animals or children who cannot consent and that brings me right back to RELIGION!! Religion has been the biggest contributor to pedophilia ever because people who want to pick on children and abuse them can hide behind a religious title much more easily than anything else. They'll be covered for and moved around by their own church. And the bible condones rape, slavery, pedophilia, murder, genocide, beating children to DEATH, wife-beating, plural wives and old men sleeping with 12 year-old girls and you're going to try to tell me that it brings GOOD morality to the table? No, get rid of religion and the backward thinking it causes. Like thinking slavery was OK and using the bible for backup. Like gay bashing and using the bible for backup, I mean COME ON! We make our own purpose, we don't need one handed to us and religion never gave me a purpose nor any atheist that I know and we're all doing just fine. I have great purpose in life, thanks. As if I need an imaginary genie in the sky full of hideous ideology to have purpose! I just loved this comment I read here! stjernekikkert: "I'm glad that I live in Denmark, haven't met anyone my whole life who is religious. There are some who just keep the traditions alive because it's "hyggeligt" :-)* and yet we have one of the safest and most equal places on earth." Sounds like, pardon me, paradise! Lol *Hyggeligt means "Cozy & pleasant" in English.
Religion is a product of ignorance. People have a tendency to believe someone else's version of the truth if they can't think of a better alternative themselves, or are too afraid to question it. Doesn't matter how old you are.
That would hurt the economy. The world needs sheep to be herd and earn money from. By removing the religions, you would lose control of billions of people, questioning why the very few are very rich while they were very poor, praying God for help... Everything is about money. None of the big guys believe in God, they are just thankful to him.
"If you destroyed all (religious doctrine), in a thousand years it would never return. If you destroyed all science texts, in a thousand years it would be back word for word" .......Mic drop. 🎤💥
Katriya You are misinterpreting what he's saying a bit. He means that if you destroy all holy books, new ones would be created, but the stories in the holy books wouldn't be the same as the old ones because religion isn't real but instead a man made concept.
I don’t consider myself an atheist, nor am I religious. Rather, I have neither the time nor desire to waste time on this kind of meaningless argument, either way! However, (much as I sigh at self-congratulatory celebrity atheists), Gervais’ point regarding the probable reappearance of scientific Vs religious text after a fixed period is quite compelling! Good point Mr Gervais!
Pesh Madscientist: agreed! I agree. Eg. Dogs treat people far better than people treat people. I believe they have an instinct that they are not here for long so may aswell enjoy it. Compared to humans who are taught the average life span of most humans. We waste our time to our peril.

im an athiest. my friends kept asking me to go to church, which i eventually did. There was a preacher and within the first 20mins , he asked a room full of poor people to bring money to him for no apparent reason, which to my amazement, they did. his accomplice then walked from the back of the room, took the money and walked off, needless to say i left early. this for me sums up religion.
I was forced to go to church countless times, since I was a kid, because my father's family is catholic. We live in a different country, and somehow my dad never managed to make me go at home. When I was a teenager, I think around 15 or 16, I went to a church and for the first time in my life I didn't just snooze or think about random stuff but listened to the preacher. I was told that Christianity is the only good religion, that neither Judaism, Islam or Buddhism is. And then another preacher said the church is poor and not new anymore, while "someone drove here with their new car" like they were supposed to donate the money. That was the end of it for me. I don't have problem with faith and belief in one or multiple gods as much, because to me, it's more or less spirituality. But I hate church and organized religion. My family is, of course, still faithful, and I don't know what would happen if I told them I didn't believe in God. Sorry for the long comment, just got it out of me.
adam garrett What I want to know about churches is... how come there no Q&A part at the end of a sermon... surely magical men in the sky and whatnot raises a few questions... not least of which is " erm... where did you come by this amazing information? " Every lecture I look at or science debate on RU-vid... well they all have a Q&A so that the audience can ask relevant questions about the premises.... you'd imagine after thousands of years religions would have worked out that it a great way of involving the audience. I got into trouble at a school mass as a kid for that... I stuck my hand up... thats what you do in school right... I never even got to ask my question... I was frogmarched out of the church just for having a question. I was 7 I think... never believed this rubbish from the get go... but that was what propelled me from already atheist to anti-theist. over the last 40 years that stupid attempt to shut me up has created more atheists than just answering the fucking question.
adam garrett for just a moment i thought you were going to say after seeing how easy it was to get this money you became a priest! thank goodness you didn't.
In the past I haven’t really thought Ricky Gervais was funny so I never took any notice of him. However, since his last speech at the Golden Globes I have watched him a few times. That's politics in a nutshell......"this is my team idc what the others have to say". I love to hear from different points of views, I actually welcome them, because I Iove to think and see others rational that differs from mine. Colbert's pompous personality does not allow him to listen to ppl and other points of view. He knows better and what's best for everyone.
I always knew he was deeply, painfully, unfunny as a comedian. I didn't know until recently that, once not self-promoting, he had a decent level of intelligence. Good for you Mr Gervais. Not a fan, but no longer a hater.
He evolved to sleep in the dark of night so as to be rested in the day time to hunt and gather his comedy material so he can feed his cave according to an intricate universal design set off by Early Matter that God used to fueled the big bang. If you want to know where the early matter comes from you will have to pray for an answer. Science will never know. Nailed yah.cisco
I know right, while other animals have better eye sight and other great features that we lack.. With bears being able to recycle poop, and some sea life living beyond many years...
After two and a half thousand years of intellectual debate, the subject is finally "nailed" by a 21st century British comedian in 13.06 minutes on You tube. Hallelujah !
Some Fella FYI, Ricky had told a tale about a “christian” messaging him saying he hoped satan would rape Ricky, so that’s where Stephen pulled that comment from.
No he's not. Colbert can easily counterpoint him. But it's a show, & Ricky is humorous, so he just went on with the flow for the sake of the audience...

@@darkness_of_the_night Yeah there are plenty of examples of magic in Harry Potter too. Your point? Yeah, that MUST be magic because that's such an unlikely scenario. I mean, it's not like there are tens of THOUSANDS of old cities all over the world that are now abandoned and in ruins is it?

The majority of atheists I see online these days go out of their way to say that atheism is nothing more than a lack of belief in god, meaning that being an atheist on this definition requires no thought whatsoever
@@Kate-fi8oh a belief is an acceptance that something exists or is true without sufficient proof. Atheists by definition believe that God does not exist which is a view that is currently indefensible

If religion gives you strength, go and believe in peace. For me, music does the same thing. As long as we are free to choose and don’t hurt each other, there is nothing dangerous in being different and believing differently😎
Jim Elliott Its all a joke to me, anyway. The way I see it is if God was real I'm sure he or she would be completely understanding as to why people didnt believe. I mean if we are referring to that one specific god out of 2900 or so.
Doryphoros Because statistically atheists know more about the bible than the cherry picking, religious bigots. Read my second comment and pay attention. My point is that in numerous versions of the bible it says non believers will be punished. So why give someone the power of freewill and then punish them for something that is not harmful, but something as simple as just not believing? Lets hear it, smart guy.... im waiting.
Doryphoros Wrong again. You have once again showed your level of ignorance. Im not religious and i have higher morals and treat people better than most religious people. You dont need God, a book or religion to be a good person and thats where the problem lies. Live a life with good morals, treat people kindly, be considerate and compassionate, help others when you can etc. I dont need a book or someone to tell me to be that way. Its the way ive always been. In fact im more of a Christian than most Christians.
I grew up in a Christian area and most of them were drunks, coke heads or people who were pregnant by the age of 15. Thats not judging, thats reality. Its what i saw. I was an alter boy for 2 years, went to church and catholic schools. When i was old enough to know i didnt need an organized religion to lead a good life I left and went to a public highschool for the last couple yrs. Religious people are the biggest judges of all. They themselves cant even follow their own rules and theyre going to to judge me? Lol. Give me a break. Youre done "my friend".
"I think you have to have worth, you have to feel to your self you have worth. Friends, family, a loving relationship, just because we are human, and that's how we are built".
As apealing as it sounds, im afraid that religions will be here to stay for much longer than that. Simple minded people hold on to it as it ease their everyday lives in promise that one day they will live hapily ever after once this shitstorm of a life ends... Its way easier that try to do something with your life to make it less shity and actualy be happy that you are even alive, because chances of that hapening where ridiculously low to begin with... People are just lazy cowards that wont accept the truth...
A populations well being has a direct correlation with how religious they are. Could well be the case that people living in shit tend to stray to religion because it gives them promise of better things, something to dream for.
The idea that we’re even having this conversation in the 21st-century is confounding. the idea that I am in the minority because I don’t believe in literal magic is just bizarre. Atheism is a CONCLUSION, not a belief
I say that all the time how in 2019 can so many people be so stupid . It's such common sense. Like Ricky said he was 8 years old and it took him an hour to figure it out lol
For either you simply need to believe, or not believe. You don't need evidence. You could have the evidence presented to you but choose to still believe or not believe. Atheist and Theist would still stand as what they are. Neither term has anything to do with anything else. I fully or partially believe in the existence of a god, or gods. I fully, or partially, do not believe in the existence of a god, or gods. That's it.
It isn’t true if you have to “believe “ in it. I don’t “believe” in photosynthesis. There is just Photosynthesis. I don’t “believe” in hats. Look: the claim that there is a god is an Extraordinary claim. So that assertion requires Extraordinary proof, of which there is none. That’s it 🤷♂️
At least science you can show people and they can witness it with all their senses, even do some themselves and all those who see it will have the same account of what you witnessed (to differ from religion, even the people in the bible don't tell the same story) maybe not the science on the Huge scale but the good thing is no matter what scale, the science is all the same. So even if you have to take the big scales "on faith" sort of, you've still seen those same building blocks and so it isn't actually faith
literally i couldn't believe in god since i was 11 and i was thinking "why do i say god help me when i'm in bad situations then?" i tried believing in myself and tried to solve things without wanting something from the unknown. it worked. it worked even better. i'm a atheist since then.

@Binguh Bungah .And what you say does not prove anything at all about the existence of a god;they might as well call for their mom,she won,t be there either.
Ancient people didn't have the understanding of what we do so far of the known universe. They were like imaginative children, "That's Apollo dragging the Sun across the sky in his chariot". "The devil was a snake that spoke to eve". Hopefully we have grown up.
My parents said that God loves you and will protect you. When they took me to church we got out of the car and I looked up at the church steeple and saw a lightening rod. I said to mum "why does the church steeple have lightening rod" she told me to be quiet or I will go to hell.
