It's a bit more nuanced I think. Ricky is clearly a smart guy, but he's also very full of himself sometimes. If you ever watched the Ricky Gervais show(with Karl) you often find him misunderstanding things and misquoting "scientific" dilemmas and such. He thinks of himself very highly even though the last few years it's gotten a bit less bad.
