This is my first video with a professional performance! Hope you enjoy this spectacular version of Cups and Balls by Ricky Jay . Such videos will be uploaded once a month and it will continue unless i have problems with the copyrights.
I saw Ricky in person many times. His version of this classic of magic is a favorite. In addition to being an amazing magician and excellent performer, Ricky’s verbal skills with his patter, was unmatched. Thank you for sharing this true master of magic. 🎭
I remember this routine from the X-Files! Love the story telling and the dry humour. Anyone who’s watched Penn and Teller knows what’s going on, but it’s all the more impressive because it’s so smooth.
Still can't believe Ricky has passed away, such a master magical card wizard that even had Penn & Teller left baffled over whilst scratching their heads aswell as the magic circle! It was a joy to see Ricky play one of the Bond villains in the Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) playing the role as Henry Gupta who was the mastermind behind the little red box that is the Royal Navy's fleet encoder that can render a ship off coarse such as the HMS Devonshire after it has been tinkered with! Staring alongside Pierce Brosnan (as 007 James Bond) and Jonathan Pryce as the power hungry mad media mogul Elliot Carver & his wife Paris played by Teri Hatcher to name a few! Suffice to say that the International magic circle most certainly will not be the same without Ricky! The best card magician in the entire world by far!!! RIP Big Chap!
I followed most of his movements in this video with the small balls, and always saw when he slid the small red balls in. But I have no idea how the fuck he managed to geth the fruits in. Genius
RIP Jay, I know how you did everything but the last. I do a lot of this act myself, but bloody good show! Before anyone jumps on me I know taking from one persons act is plagiarism, but taking from many is research, and it's up to us to make it our own. He copied many of the greats himself but the last part was his own and he will be missed by me.
At about 2:10, you see the ball in his right hand after it appeared he placed it under the center cup. I DIDN"T see him place it under the cup to his right. Thought he put it under the other one. Only an assumption on my part.
I get so upset when people will say Jay and other magicians at his level, are practicing "black magic" So is that also what the best Athletes or Musicians are all doing....NO its hours and hours and years of practicing your craft, to become one of the best.
Ricky Jay's greatest magic trick was appearing in eight million movies and TV shows, despite always just playing himself, just kind of there, like an old bloodhound, never doing an accent, barely even emoting XD Rest in Prestidigitation Mr Jay
5:21 is planting the first fruit (puts left hand behind back, sneaks fruit into the cup, will do this all 3 times) 5:35 he plants the second 6:11 he plants the final fruit
I can see how he's doing it, but I can't physically see the objects as he pulls them from his pocket or puts them under the cups. It's really mind-blowing to think how much practice in front of a mirror this takes to pull off.
EJS88 whatever you think you know, forget about it. His sleight of hand is amazing but there's something else to this. There has to be something with the table because there's absolutely no way to explain the very last trick, when the fruit appears from under the cups
Yes, there is. Watch each cup before he puts it down again. He sort of slams the cups into the table because he rolls the fruits into them from his pockets. Watch carefully, you'll see it. There's no special tricks -- just practice.
@@gcwrestling888 I saw him do that with the center cup, but I didn't see when he did it with the left and right cups. Do you have a time stamp for that?
Dear Ricky Jay: Well I guess Ricky Jay won't be reading this and e-mailing me. RIP to a great magician. Sorry I didn't scroll down farther on my laptop or I would of known he passed away
Funny story...to me at least. I was at magic/sleight of hand show years ago in Vegas and for his final trick he randomly picked me out of the audience. It was either that or he asked if anybody had a hundred dollar bill on them. I can’t remember for sure. In any event, nothing was set up in advance. Sorry that I don’t remember all the details but it was a long time ago. He was doing something and talking and I think he had a sheet over a funnel or something like that and then he asked me what I did for a living. I said that I owned a chain of bowling alleys. Then the trick was that a bowling ball dropped to the floor. I’m sure everyone in the audience thought it was a setup and the magician was pissed as Hell. I wouldn’t blame him. Who would think that a random audience member would just happen to own bowling alleys? It’s not exactly a very popular business to be in.
@@matturner6890 I assure you, the story is 100% true. However, I didn’t see him or talk to him after the show so it would be impossible for me to know exactly how he felt. If it was me, I’d be pissed because I’d think that the audience figured we just talked about everything in advance, but like I originally said, that didn’t happen.

I gotta ask. Is this actual witchcraft? 4:24 I'm not super spiritual. But no amount of explanation of logic can explain how he did this.... This has got to be something beyond human... something supernatural.
Just like all magic, once you learn the sleight that underlies the trick, it's just the same move over and over and over. It's kinda like once you know what the "double-lift" is, roughly half of all card tricks become boring.
I think the balls are magnetic. Just enough that when he slams a cup down, it dislodges. When he scoops the ball into the bottom cup, he adds another one from his hand. That way there are two in the bottom cup. Then when he takes the top cup off, he lifts it up slowly, keeping the ball in the cup. Then you'll notice he explains again, but he switches the bottom cup and the second cup, and when he puts down the new bottom cup, he slams it down, dislodging the ball leaving 3 under the bottom cup.
not necessarily magnetic, but same idea. The very top of the cup is narrow and the ball can be squeezed and lodged there. He makes a point of not showing the inside of that 2nd cup, and he puts it down (as the bottom cup) somewhat harder later, dislodging the ball and adding one of the balls to the reveal of 3 later. Basically, visualize that the ball is still in that cup after 3:04, and watch it closely. He'll put it down as the bottom cup that 3 balls end up appearing out of. That said, he performs this flawlessly, of course.
I just don't know how he could have done it if they weren't magnetic/sticky in some way. Especially given that at times he picks them straight up, and I feel like wedging it wouldn't be reliable enough for a magician.
colavfreak2 you could get it to be consistent depending on the texture and material of the ball. Magnetic would potentially make a sound, but its the same principles either way. Heck, the top of the cups might not be solid and his fingers can apply extra pressure, possibly.
Nolan ZW true. The outside of the balls could be a felt-like material, and then the inside could be metal with the top of the cup being a magnet. That likely wouldn't make any sound because it wouldn't be metal on metal.
@TheBrabon1 Yeah I think he practically hints it, but I didn't realise they were a thing until I looked them up, exact same cups and everything, just can't tell if he bought 3 sets of them and just used the 3 gimmick cups at once 🤣🤣
@TheBrabon1 It doesn't matter in general no, it mattered to me, I don't see what you're trying to explain to me that I already don't understand. Does my original comment not seem very positive or something? I put a smiley face and everything to show that I ENJOYED finding out FOR MYSELF that one of the cups were gimmicked, not to try and call him out, he's not even here anymore, why would I do that....???? Idk just seems like your fighting a fight that isn't there, I inked positively into that comment but I don't feel any from yours.
@TheBrabon1 Would never have actually known, this was the 2nd video I've ever seen about him, I only know of him because someone labeled a video of him as ASMR. Also, David Blaine has been forgotten and lost to the Shadow Realm, no need to stress about him.
The first few misdirections are a bit clunky, a bit obvious, a bit too theatrical. I didn’t realize that they were performed that way on purpose to serve as a massive misdirection at the end of this routine. Genius.
Jay's ability to flawlessly deliver his incredibly dense, literary patter, all while executing brilliant technical sleights, is what made him truly next-level.
The best thing about these performances by Ricky Jay is that he's doing really clever and entertaining magic tricks and yet he's such a showman and great storyteller that the trick becomes almost incidental and you find yourself more interested in the story
This was truly a classic performance. Saw it more than 30 years ago as a kid, still blows me away. One of the finest single performances of magic of all time. And everyone knows him from Boogie Nights...but try House of Games, a David Mamet.
Ricky Jay has also been fantastic in at least a couple other Mamet films, and that's actually where l first became a fan of his. Before l even knew that he was a master magician.
For those interested: 5:17 right fruit 5:34 left fruit 6:10 middle fruit But long setups and constant banter are the real tricks here! Magnificent. Also exagerated but fake switches got even me. It's like nod to magicians out there. Trick within a trick.
That's beyond skill. That's magic. I would not even in my wildest dreams ever hope to just understand how any of this happens and I would love that very much
@@Deere55 just misdirection. Copper Chop cups(with magnets) exist too. From practical standpoint I can only see 2 advantages: they are heavy and, unlike say alluminium or chromed cups, they are quite dark so less chance of revealing a pre-load or switch.
