www.ted.com Like your uncle at a family party, the rumpled Swedish doctor Lennart Green says, "Pick a card, any card." But what he does with those cards is pure magic -- flabbergasting, lightning-fast, how-does-he-do-it? magic.
He just works on a whole different level. I think he's really more of a magician's magician than anything. Just unbelievably original in both his style and content.
I would agree, but my dad, who doesn't know any magic says Lennart Green is his favorite magician. I don't think he's just a magicians magician, it's just that there aren't many close up magicians that laypeople have heard of.
I absolutely love Lennarts approach to magic, I love that "sloppy" style of his, makes you think that hes never touched a deck of cards in his life then when the climax comes he's not one not two but 100 steps ahead of you! hahah love from and icelandic fellow magician :)
The false illusion of sloppiness and the slow lumbering style he presents add an element of surprise for the viewer when the payoff of a trick comes that somebody using a standard slick polished approach doesn't get. At the same time though his style also creates a certain level of awkwardness and leaves a lot of the audience unaware he's even done a trick some of the time.
Very well put. And, for all of you magicians out there, you realize that Lennart is a genius - a veritable god among conjurers. He is really the complete package as to what a magician should aspire to be: a hard worker, a great routine creator, technically excellent, very humorous in a subtle way, great interactions with the audience, flexible in the heat of battle. Long ago, he asked himself, “How can I make people want to see/care about what I do with a deck of cards?” He then set about to create precisely that and, obviously, succeeded. In short, a great entertainer. In my opinion, this is the most entertaining magical clip on RU-vid.
The fact that he starts out slow where you can guess what he's doing and then halfway through it slowly ramps up to the really amazing stuff gets me. Truly a performer.
Lennart Green is a living legend man. He invented some of the most amazing table sleights the card world has seen in a long time. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell any layperson that this stuff is extremely difficult and he makes it look way too easy! Thank you so much for what you have brought to this art👏🏻
Up until now I thought Ricky Jay was at the top level of card mechanics, but this guy is also a grand master. His bumbling manor and sharp humor completely sell it to his audience.
DARYL DIETRICH meh, I just watched some of his tricks, and while he is pretty good, he is missing that air of mysticism that surrounds Ricky Jay. RJ makes me feel like I'm watching a centuries old master of their craft magician.
To be fair, it is lennarts style, to actually break the illusion of smoothness. Whenever he drops a card or misses his palm. The amazing thing is when you notice, he actually wants to miss. His precision is more than amazing.
@@crywhit4619 Pretty good? He is so good that they thought he was cheating on the World Cup of magic so he was disqualified. The experts said that what he performed was "impossible" without stooges. So he later came back, and did the same trick again, now with the judges taking part of it (selecting cards and so on). Then he finally won, as he should have done earlier.
Wow. I am in absolute awe of his skill and especially the way he delivers the entire performance. The 'magic' and misdirection is only part of the routine; the way you deliver your performance is what makes it what it is. Lennart Green has truly mastered both the magic and the deliverance. All I can say is wow. He's truly a legend in the card magic community.
For some people who dont know much about magic. The moves this guy is doing is some of the hardest moves in magic almost impossible to pull off smoothly like he is.
i don't think ppl realize how amazing some of his routine is. like when he changed the 5 clubs to the queen; it actually was one card. he ditched with the right hand and used the top shot w/ the left. the sheer speed and accuracy to top shot into a palm position WHILE ditching is completely unfathomable
If I was approached by a 'Magician' on the street that showed me a 'deck of cards' I would punch him in the face and say, you said you were going to show me 'magic' not a 'card trick' , 'card tricks are not magic' sad bastards. :'-(
@@MrAvocadoMan Totally agree. I found a few things "off" with what he was saying. Hard to follow/a bit confusing. If his English was a bit better, this would be 10/10. At the moment it's 8/10 for me.
@@billyd4eva The accent and his supposed "struggle" with English makes it fun. He has a very good command of the English language - better than many native English speakers.
Rest in peace to the girl. I remember watching this so long ago. Sad to know that she passed away. This has been one of the best magic performances I’ve always come back to watch.
I had the pleasure of seeing Lennart in person in the company of other top magicians, and he was definitely who everyone else was talking about. He's the rare magician that developed all his own original techniques. Other magicians are now performing the trick where he deals cards and they vanish when they hit the table, but when I first saw it, I just about lost it. That really felt like magic. I can understand sort of how it is done, but what a mind to have thought of doing that in the first place.
Do you all understand how absolutely incredibly difficult this is There are about a dozen different methods going on and on top of it he has to act like this amd make it look completely out of control/random Absolutely genius level stuff
BOAB You mean they need to bring back people like him. His appearance here precedes all the self indulgent bullshitters on TED in the last 7-8 years. It's gotten so bad that that's what they created the TEDX branch for.
@@PreservationEnthusiast No. It stands for Technology Entertainment and Design. And they indeed do include everything now. This talk however is from 2005.
Watched this when I first started college, I graduated last year. Many nights during freshman year was me practicing that card flick and catch with the other hand, and now whenever I pull it off, it always gets a reaction. Thanks Mr. Green.
I think i’ve had this recommended every 6 months since it was recorded. And Year on Year this is still my favourite sleight/control routine. Brilliant to watch!
The assistant’s reaction about 15:37, is a dream for all performers. From audience control to card control, there was nobody better, for my money. Like many have said, you watch it all the way through, no skipping ahead, it is just that good.
A true professional and master of the craft! This guy is so pro, it's unbelievable! Magicians and those who know sleight of hand will probably appreciate this guy's work more than anything. It's difficult to put into words how remarkable this performance is...
I just love the improvisation of this moment. It may have been a set up but it feels improvised. If you watch closely you can see him decide to take the heckler on as he realizes he can pull an Armani out of nowhere. This guy is a genius.
@@stephenbochicchio4506 it was already part of his act but just not at that moment. And he even implies it when he says "it was after the blindfold" meaning the blindfold act that he was gonna do next
"A blonde"? Not even "A blonde GIRL"? Just "a blonde" like that is what defines here. And what about her anyway. Shes just a girl. Why are so many magicians social misfits who HAVE to react to any girl on a magic video? No wonder so few of us are into magic! Pathetic.
"What about her". She looks absolutely stunning, and people like looking at pretty people. "Why are so many magicians social misfits who HAVE to react to any girl on a magic video?" You dug this one comment about the girl from reply to another comment among hundreds of comments where one mentions she looks nice, and you take that to mean **many** magicians are social misfits. For someone that seemingly tries to preach message of treating everyone as person regardless of their characteristics, you seem to have ironically just stereotyped a huge bunch of people in your search for social justice. "No wonder so few of us are into magic!" As someone that is somewhat interested in gender gaps, some fields being hugely male-oriented is a puzzle, but I really can't see you making shallow judgemental comments like this helping in figuring that puzzle out or improving the world otherwise :p
"Don't look at the beam, my fault. Because this is a high frequency laser, and it's enough with a fraction of a second to destroy the retina completely" lool this guy is hilarious and his sleight of hand is on point!!!! Great stuff
amazing performance, amazing misdirection, amazing slight of hand, amazing presentation, amazing humour from an amazing man.....trust me, it takes years of practice to be this good.
30:10 "Queen with mis-direction" lol the girls reaction - couldn't have been more perfect - he's little hand gesture tops it - knowing exactly where she's been distracted haha funny guy
Every time I watch this I find some new gags, new subtleties, new funny ideas. This guy is such a legend. So much entertainment with just a deck of cards. I will never get bored of this performance
This guy is one of the most supremely talented cardmen today. His techniques are quite original and he performs them with enviable precision and mastery. Lennart is a truly unique gift to the magic community. While everyone else was busy drooling over the girl, I was drooling over Lennart's amazing skills.
If Mr. Green still does this magic, I'd love to see him on Penn & Teller's Fool Us show on the CW. There was a "messy sleight-of-hand cards" magician on that show recently (Season 10) that worked like this guy does. He got a trophy, and I'm sure Mr. Green would as well.
His techniques are so easy to see, yet when he performs them you're still wowed by them, they're just unprecidented in their precision. It's incredibly impressive.
Laypeople can't appreciate just how good Lennart Green really is. He's doing things that 99.9% of magicians can't do. His technical skill is incredible. One of a kind.
I saw this amazing performer lecture for magicians in Phoenix around 20 years ago. No one knew who he was yet so there were only 10 people in the audience. It was probably the best magic lecture I had ever attended. So entertaining, technical, funny, and amazing. 💥BOOM!!!💥™
Lennart Green is absolutely astounding. Believe it or not, this is one of his poorer performances (a couple of mistakes he covers very well, a couple of misses on catching cards). He is even more talented than what is shown here. He is a great engaging performer, of course, but his technical skill, knowledge, and original contributions to card magic can hardly be overstated. What a guy.
@@TedTheTreeyeah a few were mistakes. When he does the top shot move (the move where he shoots a card from the deck and catches it in his hand) there were a few times it sorta bounced off his hand and he doesn’t catch it. Being someone who does this move myself I know that that’s just the way it goes wrong sometimes, the card shoots at a very slightly different angle or speed making it hard to catch and it bounces off your hand. Not a huge mistake at all. But a slight mistake and not intentional.
@@repeater64 That could be part of the trick, convincing the audience he is always shooting the card from his left to his right hand, when in reality, the first two times he does that trick he already has the card in his right hand. The sloppiness isn't really a problem, especially with him being blindfolded. I think it even adds to his performance.
I saw one clip of his that's only about 1 minute long and he puts 5 cards down, one at a time and they disappear as he puts them down, with no hint as to where they go. I have watched that clip dozens of times and it's truly magic. He is amazing.
I am not a magician but I saw how he did some of those tricks and he is very accomplished. Of course I won't spoil it for anyone, however when you understand how magic tricks are performed it actually makes the magic more enjoyable because you are looking for that moment when the magician distracts the audience from what he/she is doing.
Man ! Saw This Back In The Beginning Of 2012 , Still Stays Fresh ! His Patter His Comedy His Misdirection His Everything Related To Magic Is Awesome . I Think Everyone Will Agree That He Is A Legend In Magic !
one of the few card tricks that knowing the secret make you struck in awe more! while the effect seem not as impressive as some other card tricks the sheer skill and talent for these tricks is out of this world!
15:42 "ok I had to use a little force there" He's joking to magicians only lol. He acted like he was doing a force but clearly didn't. Truly a magician's magician
Even though I know how he's doing some of these amazing things, I still have the utmost respect and admiration for his unmatched skill and performance style. Lightning fast, and almost to quick to be believed. The hand, in this man's case, truly IS quicker than the eye.
He is extremely good. So many card techniques used. Card control, top and bottom deals, amazing use of holds. This man and a skilled dice controller would be dangerous at a casino.
ive been doing magic since i was little....this is guy is an old skool MASTER!!. one of the best magicians ive ever seen!!! had me laughing so hard one minute then in awe next minute!
MAYBE this is a 'TED talk' emphasizing the ability to Multi-Task IF one can put ones mind to the 'TASK'. Lennard Green's multi-tasking ability is at an UNBELIEVABLE level; he appears to make an absolute mess of gathering up the cards, WHILE attempting to explain what he is going to do next, WHILE changing his mind to ask his assistant to shuffle the cards WHILE asking someone in the audience to pick a specific card or suit! His mind MUST function at a WARP-NINE speed just to 'produce' the correct end result HE set out to make........AMAZING!
Awesome, I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen a lot of card tricks and magic, but this guy is on another level. I realised he was something else when he failed to shuffle the cards and even dropped them a few times. That's one talented guy. Thx for the upload.
