Miracles happen. Just ask Ricky Rudd.
Coming off turn four during the 1984 edition of the Busch Clash at Daytona, Ricky got turned into a horrifying series of barrel rolls and pirouettes that left his car destroyed and his body bruised and battered.
And he never missed a beat. This is his story.

I always liked Ricky Rudd and pulled for him for many years. We all tend to pull for the superstars, the Pettys, Waltrips, Earnhardts, Gordon’s of his time. But how few of us are actual superstars in our own professional lives? Most of us are hard workers, show up to work every day, and are very good, maybe even great at what we do. But not a superstar. I think that personifies Ricky Rudd’s career in Nascar. His placement in Hall of Fame is well deserved. Congratulations

You summed it up perfectly. As a Rudd fan I can tell you this is what appealed to me. He was the personification of working class. Nitty Gritty and always there. He did not politic with the France Family. That even cost him a race, Sears Point 1991. They took a win from him. They said that Dale Earnhardt was the working mans driver, I don't mean no disrespect but Dale Earnhardt had access to Bill France on his radio. Dale played politics with the France family. Dale also had many contested disputed go his way, just ask Mark Martin. Ricky Rudd personified the working class better than any other driver. He also held is own. He was fighting for wins from 1977 all the way until 2005. He remained the sports constant for over 30 years.

In 1984 Earnhardt was a long way from being a superstar and Gordon hadn't turned a lap in a race car .Rudd was a good driver on certain tracks but was never in that top eshalonn of drivers as his numbers show .That coupled with the personality of a cactus was the reason he was never a fan favorite .

I can still see him now, sitting in the car with the duct tape keeping his eyes 👀 open. Ricky is one tough dude 😎

I have the Richmond race on video tape. After Rudd passed Waltrip he never took the inside. Lap after lap he stayed high and the announcers couldn't believe it. When your car takes you to the front in the top lane why change things. Great redemption for Raccoon eyes. RIP Bud Moore a great American Hero.

Who started talking around the 8:30 mark? Sounded robotic.

It's Steve Waid, a reporter and columnist for many NASCAR magazines. I'm not sure what happened to his voice, but he never used to sound like that back in the day. He must have had some kind of illness.

He had really bad throat cancer nearly 15 years ago. It’s a miracle he’s still around, much less doing a podcast.
