If I played some of these songs a little more often and had a better recording set up they'd sound a helluva lot better. Again, I'm not making any money from this stuff, so I just try to have fun with it.

Just how do you do that?

I'm not sure what "that" is, lol. I've played drums for the majority of my life. I get myself into trouble sometimes posting these vids because I haven't played the songs in a long time and I BS my way through them when I can't remember the exact parts. On the positive side, I also kind of think of that as being a "good drummer"......being able to compensate for my own screw-ups without totally wrecking the song :)

@@DM-tc3gz ‘that’ is what I think is next level drumming! I’m just learning to play and I’m a big fan of the beastie boys and really enjoyed your vid. I’m nowhere on the drumming ladder but I wish I had half your skills. Compensating for the screw up must be a sign of a good drummer, keep on posting vids and I’ll look out for them!

Thanks! I've been there before, and, as long as I've played, I still feel that way when I try to attempt certain songs. There are still things that cross me up when I try to play them the first few times, but I usually figure them out and then it's pretty easy to play. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED with your playing! If you ever keep trying and trying and trying to nail down a difficult song just play a few easier songs instead that you know and have fun with them. Over time you'll eventually get to the point where songs that used to give you trouble are no trouble at all! The best advice I can give is to just keep playing. You'll figure out what works for you, and how to make it work. I'm self-taught. There are a few techniques I've not mastered, but they aren't things that come up often in songs anyway. As a drummer, having a good "internal clock" is probably the most important thing. If you have that you can completely mess up a fill, but if you come back in on the beat nobody knows the difference anyway, and it sounds like it was planned:) The second bit of advice is to play different styles of music. It helps! If you come across a song that you think has some cool drums, or a cool drum part, try to play it! Also, thinking back, a huge step forward for my own playing was when I was able to finally keep a steady 4/4 beat with the hi-hat regardless of what else I was playing. It was something unobtrusive that kept me grounded and opened up freedoms all over everything else on my drum set. Basically, pay attention to that left foot (or the right foot, if you're a lefty). I can play just about every Led Zep song pretty well, and though the bass drum beat swings and varies much of the time, the hi-hat was always rock solid by Bonham. Good luck, and keep playing!
