One thing the new producers liked to do was bring back old enemies of the Doctor. Partly for nostalgic reasons (at least for older viewers), but also because they always seem to present interesting stories.

One of my favourite aspects of the cybermen is simply how sad they are. They’re simply just normal people which have been forced into becoming these emotionless machines. Nothing illustrates this more than the simple design choice of having teardrops carved out underneath their eyes.
@therealpbristow
@therealpbristow 3 месяца назад
The irony is, those teardrops were originally just cooling holes drilled into the existing helmets, because the actors were overheating inside. But the resulting effect/metaphor was so great, they've been brought back as a deliberate feature. =:o}

The Cybermen are one of the biggest villains from the classic series, along with the Daleks and one other who has yet to appear. The ones we see here are a slightly different version, being from a parallel universe. There are quite a few actors who were in both Harry Potter and Doctor Who. Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) appears later this series and Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), David Bradley (Filch), John Hurt (Ollivander) and others appear in later series. They both cast a lot of British actors so some crossovers are bound to occur.

Roger Lloyd-Pack (John Lumic) was in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Barty Crouch Senior; in the same movie, David Tennant played Barty Crouch Junior. But in the UK, Roger is most well known for sitcoms, particularly as Owen in Vicar of Dibley, and as Trigger in Only Fools and Horses 🙂

Dr. Kit Pedler who created the Cybermen in the the mid 60s was a Surgeon who was concerned about the new technology of replacing organs. Script Editor Gerry Davis read his book (which I have) and adapted the concepts to create the Cybermen. They are credited with being inspired for The Borg in Trek 20 years later
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 3 месяца назад
Pedler was a doctor who specialised in eye diseases, not a surgeon. He later got involved in parapsychology (ESP, the paranormal, ghosts etc).
@therealpbristow
@therealpbristow 3 месяца назад
Pedlar was actually hired as the show's scientific advisor. His first contribution was the basis of "The War Machines", and then he and Davis together created the Cybermen.
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 3 месяца назад
@@therealpbristow I don't think he was "hired" per se, as it was an unofficial position, and I've never been able to find out how many stories he was asked to advise on.
@therealpbristow
@therealpbristow 3 месяца назад
@@ftumschk Fair point; I should have said "brought in". =:o} His definite, credited contributions are "the War Machines" (where he worked with writer Pat Dunlop (father of actress Leslie), until Pat got a new gig elsewhere and Ian Stuart Black took over), and the creation of the Cybermen, as well as storylines/draught scripts for several subsequent Cybermen stories (some of which are credited solely to him - probably because Gerry Davis wasn't allowed to be credited as writer at the same time as script editor). I would guess Gerry would have discussed other ideas with him, some of which would end up in the show and some not, but there's really only a couple of other stories over that period that might have needed any input from a science advisor. "The Power of the Daleks" re-uses some established (completely wrong!) "science" about static electricity, much beloved of its writer David Whitaker, so no input needed there (the idea of a mercury swamp is more likely to have come from Whitaker's interest in the ideas/history of alchemy - where mercury plays a big role - than from Kit). "The Underwater Menace" might potentially have benefitted from some comments about hydrodynamics and/or genetic manipulation...? "The Macra Terror" plays with the idea of aliens requiring a completely different atmosphere to Earth-based life, which *might* have been something Kit raised; And then comes "The Evil of the Daleks" which (1) just re-uses David Whitaker's "magical" interpretation of what static electricity can do, plus (2) was the point where Gerry Davis was handing over the reigns of script editor, thus becoming free to *officially* co-write "The Tomb of the Cybermen" with Kit. There's no indication that any of the subsequent script editors called on Pedlar except as a source of Cyberman story outlines, and I think it was probably Terrance Dicks who later commented that on "Doctor Who" you don't really need a scientific advisor, and if anything they'd just get in the way! =:o}

The Cybermen are on par with the daleks. They, along with the daleks, are one of the longest returning villians in who and have had major changes over the years. The original designs had human hands and eyes with a head wrapped in bandages with a human skull in it using a mechanism to lower the jaw so they could talk. And that was in 1966! They are one of the best examples of body horror in television to date imo.

The Doctor saw a Cyberman head at the beginning of Dalek (from the last season). That's what they looked like in the classic series. Speaking of the classic series... we did see a parallel world in that, all the way back in the 70s. The Third Doctor went to a parallel world in the story Inferno. It's regarded as pretty great, especially the twist at the end. Technically the Fourth Doctor visited another one (called E-Space), but it's weird and complicated and not really worth getting into.

The Cybermen in NuWho are different to classic Who. The Cybermen were created by Dr. Kit Pedler, a scientist whom the Doctor Who production team brought on board back in the 60’s to come up with new scientific ideas that could be turned into stories. Pedler was fascinated by cybernetics replacing human parts and organs, and wondered what would happen to a person who had all their emotions removed, as well as some cybernetic parts replacing diseased limbs etc. Would they still be a person, or would they be part machine or a combination of both? In NuWho, that idea is portrayed slightly differently, wherein only a person’s brain is removed from the body, and grafted onto an exo-skeletal suit, which in itself is empty! Apart from the notion that a brain can be severed from a body and placed in a tin helmet (which can’t be done) I personally think that the way classic Cybermen are portrayed is a much more horrific and frightening idea - of someone losing their humanity and needing cybernetic parts to keep them ‘alive!’ Be interesting to hear your thoughts on the two comparisons if you ever decide to give classic Who a go, as to which ones you like the best!
