He is so right. I am Anglican and I didn’t leave the church but the church left me. I still love the liturgy and the 39 Articles but they are not adhered to anymore so I had to leave. Like Rico I now attend a Reformed Church.

Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones wrote one of the best books I ever read called, “Authority” . It helped me see through Rome, the papacy and the Charismatic movement. He believed in the baptism of the Holy Spirit but in a scriptural way not the circus we call the church today. Authority helped me make sense of society. We need a Martin Lloyd Jones today. He would not have compromised the Gospel.

@@SheepDog1974He is said to have described himself as Calvinistic Methodist (alternatively referred to as Presbyterian) although he became a Congregational minister at Westminster Chapel. When it became clear that the merging of Presbyterian and Congregational churches to create the United Reformed Church (URC) included moving away from the reformation position of Sola Scriptural, he led the Chapel to remain independent from both the URC and the Congregational Federation of independent Congregational churches. Instead it joined the FIEC, in keeping with his view of church government being a fellowship of local churches not bound by the fiats of a denominational hierarchy.

Loved & listened much to the preaching of MLJ and will continue to do so. MLJ was one of the most visionary and of course, apostolic of all preachers in recent times. He was much maligned, even in my little Scottish evangelical church. & after 30+ years of zero discipline, lending to a more liberal stance! I too had to move on to a Presbyterian Church. Order & discipline are very much the teaching of Christ & Paul in particular. MLJ was ahead of his time, much of his teaching describe exactly what has transpired a 100 years on. Correct Doctrine, now an almost forbidden word, certainly a despised word among many ‘evangelicals’ is an essential teaching method of biblical teaching. Maintaining good doctrine will prevent the many abuses of scripture now rampant in the church and what a mess she is in. However, the church has alway been going through refinement as are its members and God is still on the throne. Stay faithful, remain strong in the Lord each & all. Fear not, for time is short.

The operative word here is "Correct Doctrine" ; Doctrine divides, indeed. MLJ follows the correct Doctrine of Christ and the apostiles as Paul so clearly states.

But not about everything. Romans 7, for example. However, the CofE is unreformable, both as an institution and in terms of the local church, so it's definitely time to leave. Those who don't will, in time, be condemning their churches to ever greater compromise and eventual apostasy.

@@alanhowe7659 By my understanding, Dr MLJ previously taught that it was someone under conviction but not yet a regenerate Christian, in the sermon I noted above he stated that it's a regenerate believer who is in the Spirit wrestling with their flesh (which I think is the pretty standard exposition of Romans 7 when you're not trying to dismiss the passage due to the Methodist presuppositions of Christian Perfectionism). There's obviously no way I could know how widespread his earlier understanding of the text was or it's impact but it should be noted that asserting that Paul is not talking about the born-again believer (e.g. Written from the perspective of an unregenerate man or Adam) is the standard Methodist explanation that goes at least as far back as Jacobus Arminius. I'm not defending Dr MLJ's previous view or asserting that it was not harmful, what I am stating is that his theology in this area developed and I think it's appropriate to recognise that. I've heard it asserted from various people that this was Dr MLJ's view as if this was something which had not changed and I trust they are simply unaware that it did. I know that I have said things which have been incorrect and unhelpful and I also know my theology has developed over time too, so I would hope that if someone were to engage with something I said or wrote it would be with the understanding that people learn and grow. Thus, I think that grace should be extended to theologians in history. We need to remember that when we engage with a piece of theological work, it's a snapshot in the wider life and theology of a person.

MLJ was right about the CofE problem, but there was no ready-made destination for CofE men who might have left. What was (and is still) needed is a Reformed Anglican Church separate from the state and faithful to Scripture and the 39 Articles. There needs, in other words, to be a mass walk-out of CofE ministers into such a body, along the lines of ACNA in North America, but without the fault-line of women's ordination. This requires vision and leadership. Where is our modern-day Cranmer?

There are quite a few reformed Anglican bodies out there, as our church discovered when we left the CofE last October, but they are all relatively small. The issue with leaving the CofE for many churches we have spoken to is far more practical - buildings, pensions, payrolls, insurance, safeguarding oversight and the like are not small things you can sort out and set up in an instant. @wemuk5170

CoE schools are much worse than state schools because they pretend to be ‘Christian’ but are clearly not. They are wolves in sheep skin. For example, unlike secular state schools, CoE schools teach and promote non-evidence based theory as truth, critical race theory contrary to directions issued by the government. As a Christian I see it as an absurdity the legal requirement that the CoE topmost leadership, the bishops must be chosen by (non-Christian) prime ministers. Besides Jesus had specifically said that His kingdom is not of this world. Thus the CoE should be separate from the state.

Actually the denominations are not arguing with each other, at least in the UK. They often get together for special events. People have different ways of expressing their worship, and they are free to choose how they will do so. For example, church services in the CofE are, by and large, more traditional, using set texts for worship and prayer. On the other hand, Pentecostal services tend to be more expressive and impromptu, with opportunity for members of the congregation to participate by praying publicly, sharing a scripture and/or a word of encouragement.

I am bewildered by Calvinists who complain, rebuke and attempt to correct what God has predestined, preordained and decreed to happen to everything in the world and has decided who will be saved and who won't, from the foundation of the world! Listen up reformers, you can't have it both ways. Either God has set everything according to His Will and nothing will change it, or He has given men freewill to do what they want with the expectation that they would answer for their decisions at the Judgement Seat.
