Ricoh GR III Quick Tip 1: Is there a problem with dust on the Ricoh GR III sensor?

Ricoh GR III owners, along with most compact camera owners, have either had a battle with dust on the sensor, or have heard horror stories from those that have. This is not unique to the Ricoh GR III, but like most compact cameras, it is susceptible to it. Why? Because the lens is not removable, therefore, when dust attaches itself to the lens housing, then the lens is retracted back into the camera, it pulls the dust particles in with it, and they have to come to rest somewhere. And sometimes that's smack in the middle of your sensor.
This video explains how that happens, and a possible solution to prevent this from occurring. It includes the Ricoh GA-1 Adapter with a 49mm UV filter screwed in to help protect the lens from dust entering.
Keep in mind, having dust on the sensor, or any lens, is not the end of the world. Sometimes it's so small it might only show up with you are at the top end of your aperture (16 to 22), and even then, most photographers are used to dirty lenses at one point or another. I used Lightroom for everything, so if I had a dust issue I would just clone it out and move on. I've had many lenses with this issue, as I didn't feel like taking them apart and cleaning. So it's definitely not unique to this camera, or a deal killer by any means.
I will admit I don't even pay much attention to my Ricoh GR III photos regarding dust spots, as I'm using it for 'gritty' street scenes anyway, where i may be tempted to add artificial grain, and certainly not worrying about cloning out a small spec if I had to.

Thanks Olle! I typically just wrap the Ricoh in a little bubble-wrap pouch I have (must have been from a lens purchase or something), then I put that in my regular camera bag, which goes with me when I shoot in case I want to move over the the Canon or one of my film cameras. So, I don't carry the Ricoh by itself. I'm sure there are options out there though. I assume you've tried Amazon, etc? Either way, I'd say keeping it wrapped/boxed/cased when not using is as important as trying to protect it from dust when you're using it. Good luck my friend!

While a Fuji shooter myself, I found this very useful as I am looking at the X100V. Like the GRs, the X100 lineup is a fixed lens rig, and honestly sensor dust, well, I did not consider that possibility. I’ll have to investigate to see if this is an issue on the X100 before plopping down $1300. Keep these vids comin’...
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 3 года назад
Thanks cameraman! I'll be honest, I should have pointed out in the video, I rarely check for dust spots in the first place. I only use it for street photography, and if it did get dust on the sensor I use lightroom anyway. I've had other DSLR lenses with dust that I used for long periods without cleaning, it was never a huge deal for me. But I know it's a heavy topic, thus the video.
@professionalpotato4764
@professionalpotato4764 2 года назад
The X100V is dust and weather resistant, almost completely. Just pop on a clear/UV filter and it'll seal the camera completely. I think the Ricoh is just more prone because the lens moves in and out. The X100 series just stays put.
@HogbergPhotography
@HogbergPhotography Год назад
In my knowledge, dust issues on the Fujifilm X100-line of cameras is non existent. I have been reckless with my X100F for about 4.5 years shooting in almost every environment possible, and still not a single speck of dust on any shots. You do not need to worry about dust on the X100V.

Do you leave the adapter and filter on all the time? I just got my Ricoh GR iii (used) and set it up like yours. Do you use a case or have one that you recommend? I got the exact adapter and filter that you recommended and also got a Peak Designs wrist strap and a tempered glass LCD screen protector. I bought a case off Amazon but the camera doesn’t fit in it with the adapter and filter in place. I don’t think it’ll be good to take the adapter and filter off and on a lot. Do you recommend a certain type of small case which will accommodate the adapter and 49 mm filter? I’m really looking forward to getting out and shooting some pictures in New Orleans next week. Great videos by the way! Thank you!

I kept my GRIII in a regular camera bag and never carried it in it's own bag. And with the III yes I left the adapter on all the time (again, in a compartment of my regular camera bag usually with other cameras in there as well). This is a great addition to help protect the camera. Are you still using this adapter with the GRiii? I've noticed that near the bottom of the adapter, there are 2 tiny gaps/holes from the protrusion of the design. Have you seen this become a problem with allowing dust and other things to enter the space? Also, other reviews have mentioned that this adapter causes vignetting; have you experienced this issue with this adapter? Thanks for your help.
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 2 года назад
It's def not a fail-proof way of preventing dust, just mainly makes it easier to use for me, but assume it helps with the dust issue slightly. Regarding the vignetting, I can definitely say I have NEVER had an issue with that. Anyone who does have an issue must be using something different than the GA-1. hope that helps my friend!

Have that exact same setup with the GRIII and the filter (from day 1) but still have tons of dust on the sensor. It's just a reality on this camera and my number one gripe. Great images and one of my fave ever but not a great enduring adventure camera bc it's not weather sealed.
@DozierGraphic
@DozierGraphic 2 года назад
Can't disagree, even though I haven't had the issue, it's always going to be a threat. But I use the GA-1 more for the way I hold the camera than the dust. Definitely not any proof it works against the dust. Thanks for the comment!
@stevieb7121

I used this method for a while but eventually wanted to go back to the slim-line profile of the original camera. What I now have is a tight, push-on metal cap that fits on the bayonet ring. This stops dust getting to the lens mechanism while the camera is in the bag/pocket and is quickly removed with a twist of the bayonet. There's also no extra glass to shoot through. The extra glass was only a concern, for me, when there's a risk of flare from dust if shooting into the light. Good video and tip!
@DozierGraphic

Great idea on the push-on cap as well Stevie! I failed to point out in this particular video that I like the GA-1 also because of the way I can scissor it while walking, it's a comfortable holding method for me.

Because I keep my camera in my pocket its hard to use the adapter because it adds too much bulk. Currently I use a stick on UV filter and the metal cap while the camera is in my pocket. Been doing this for about 5 months now. When the camera is not in my pocket I keep it in a bubble wrap bag so that dust floating around does not settle on it or under the ring dial.

DIY idea to fix the dust problem 🙂 I bought a GR III a few days ago. Regarding the dust issue with the GR, I had a maybe weird but maybe useful idea to fix the dust issue DIY instead of sending the GR to Ricoh for a costly cleaning. As I was watching the video and thouhgt about how to avoid the dust problem myself, it suddenly came to my mind how much air is sucked out of food (e.g. bread) and how strong it could be compressed when I vacuum food with a food vacuum sealer, that I recently bought. If dust gets sucked into the camera when the lens is retracted, why not try vacuuming it out - with a food vacuum sealer. Put the GR in a sealing bag or box and when you vacuum out the air, maybe the dust will come out of the camera too, or at least clear the sensor of dust? Not sure if the vacuum can hurt the camera, I don't think so. Just a spontaneous idea.

It's certainly not the answer to dust on the sensor, but it's the only way I could hold/shoot the camera (with the GA-1 coupler) so regardless of whether it prevents dust is still preferable for me. I will probably have to get it cleaned by Ricoh, although I don’t know the price for this yet... However, I will probably not get such an adapter, because it is absolutely not compatible with the most important factor which of course is the tininess of the camera. I keep it in my bag or pants or where ever.. and its this ease of use which I love. Well, this love will probably cost me a few hundreds bucks, still worth it.

Thanks for sharing Etienne. I think you make a good point - sometimes it comes down to a choice of convenience vs cost of sensor cleaning. Understandable point, but with the cheaper quality/priced Samsung, you do lose quality and even though I'm pissed about the cheap plastic wheel on the back, there is no doubt the quality of the camera, images and many other features place this camera above most others. In what way? Even with the GA-1 attached, I can hide the entire camera in the palm of my hand. Looks like a phone if anyone glances at it. The fact I wear a gopro vest makes it obvious, but without the vest, the camera is easier to conceal in your hand with the GA-1, as it gives you something to wrap your fingers around. How much dust is flying around ppl lol If you cover it when your not using it and don't open it and close it in an old dusty room I don't see why it should be fine no?

Well, I think most of the issues might be people living in environments that have particles in the air, etc. Or they carry it in their pocket and lint can latch onto the lens and get sucked into the camera when it's turned off and the lens retracts. But again I have to say I don't even look/check for since my street shots are usually so busy. But hope not to ever experience it!

@@DozierGraphic I want this one pretty bad and considering selling some equipment to cut the cost down...do you feel the Autofocus/Snapfocus is good enough for street or does it lag
@DozierGraphic

@@stephengreico2810 No lag at all Stephen. That's what makes it so different. I had to use it before understanding the concept - even though it's pretty basic, makes you wonder why all cameras don't have the feature. Takes all the guess work out of it, and I can't point to any photo that was out of focus that wasn't my fault for moving too fast, etc. but typically camera never fails me when it comes to quick snaps - that's what the feature is for - no lag at all that I can detect. It was a big purchase for me to justify, but if you're shooting street then it's a good investment.

1 inch actually is almost APSC; in facts Canon APSC is 1 inch.

Thanks for the comment Chris, and not calling you wrong, but unless you can come up with some different numbers, I have it as Canon's almost double the 1" sensor ... 1" sensor size: 12.80 x 9.60mm Canon APS-C sensor size: 23.5×15.6 mm What am I missing?
