How do I use Snap Focus for Street Photography with the Ricoh GR III? It's not difficult, especially if you don't put too much thought into. The biggest problem new owners and users face with snap focus and the Ricoh GR cameras is trying to overthink how Snap Focus works. In this video, we try to focus not on the how it works, but how to use it.
Snap Focus with the Ricoh GR III is one of the best features for a street photographer. While it is similar, and based upon the Zone Focusing premise, Ricoh takes the guess work out of the process, and helps the photographer concentrate on the shot and framing, not the technical aspects of zone focusing.
There are three ways to use Snap Focus with the Ricoh GR III. I go through all three options, starting with my least favorite, to my method of choice for my street photography.

When the camera is set in Snap Focus - you can choose to have it autofocus if you want to for a specific shot - just touch the screen where you want it to AF and it will do so for that one shot only.

I'll add to that excellent point by saying that you can also map Manual Focus to the FN button. Now anytime you want to lock the focus press FN. It will remain at the last focus distance and you can shoot with no focus delay. And if you want to change the focus distance, you can (as mentioned) touch the screen and it sets a new focus distance. Want to switch back to standard auto-focus, just press the FN button again.

@@DozierGraphic i immediately set my GRiii up like that based on your recommendation. A lot of people that are new to photography don’t have a clue about how aperture effects depth of field. I used to never use Auto ISO, but sensors are so good now that I don’t worry about shooting at 3200 or beyond.

@@WingMan1964 For street photography ISO is kind of irrelevant, and up to 3200 (or even 6400 if required) is not a big deal. But for landscape, etc I would never go above 1600, but that's just me (an old guy who was raised on film cameras that were terrible over 1600, still can't wrap my mind around higher ISO) lol

I’ve had my GR iiii for about a week and it has been annoying me because of autofocus before snap it was clunky your advice about going into the focus options and choosing snap has sorted that out, thanks a bunch, I’ve since looked at other stuff about snap focus and non mention going into focus and choosing snap!

Wow! Brilliant vid. I've had a Ricoh GR (original) for years and didn't realise there was any way to use the snap-focus other than "press the button quickly all the way". I've always struggled to complete this action while holding the camera steady. I've checked the menu and the original GR also has the AF options you describe here, so I'll be giving it another go. NOTE, Fuji XF10 has a snap focus that works very simply. Using a program ably function button, you can toggle thru settings of f5.6 at 5 meters to f8 at 2 meters back to AF. Set shutter at 1/400 and auto ISO with 3200 max. Works great and it’s simple - don’t need to menu crawl.

Yes sir! That's the way I have it set as well, but didn't want to confuse the issue in this video (or confuse myself lol) so I tried to stay as basic as possible (as I have a tendency to ramble on). But yes, using the Fn button to switch back and forth is the stealthiest way to use the Ricoh!

Using the Fn to focus and lock, it will bring up the distance scale. You can use this to help train your eyes distance from you to your subject, comes in handy when you learning and developing zone shooting skills. Not just for street this also can apply to cityscapes because there are at time when 5m (i keep in the metric settings) isn't far enough and you'll get better focus on a distance object when using infinity.

Much like using Manual mode, it is a good practice, however, I did spend the money on this camera because it does the 'zone focusing' for me. Kind of like why I pay for someone else to change my oil instead of doing it myself lol My style is more rapid point and shoot, less concern about zone and focusing allows me to run and gun and get some exercise. Once I get started, I don't like stopping and fiddling with settings, but again, that's why this camera appeals to me so much. I heavily use snap focus so much so that I've remapped the ISO on the jog wheel to be able to switch between snap mode and AF and the timer/multishot on the opposite side to cycle through snap focus distance. For me its a bit easier then digging through the menus or using the adj button. Thanks again

It's been tough with the winter cold and downtown basically shut down all winter (election, protests, covid, UGH!!!) and let's face it, my strength is street, not technical videos lol so just trying to keep my head above water until people get back outside. On a positive note, we have the NCAA men's tournament coming to Indianapolis in March - that should be a HUGE bounty for me! Keeping fingers crossed! Thanks again my friend!

Have you found a way to lock the focus/depth of field bar to the display screen? I use at select Af + full press snap, and I can’t find a way to lock it to always be on display without going to manual or snap focus mode

Have you tried putting it on the adjustment wheel? I don't use that configuration, so I don't need to lock the focus/dof bar, but I would assume you would add it to the adjustment wheel (the button on the top back just behind the ON/OFF button. Let me know if that works.

@doziergraphic great video. Appreciate your snap focus tips with your shooting style. You made a comment around shooting at 10’ or more away not being as appealing with regards to the composition. I am curious if you’ve since looked at the 3X? With the 40mm lens I wonder if you could get used to framing you subjects at that distance or if the frame is too tight for your style?

I don’t like the 40mm for street, unless you’re stationary, but even then I feel it looks obvious you aren’t close to the subject and it can lose the ‘intimacy’ of the mood. But while training yourself to be bolder/closer there’s nothing wrong with a 40mm, just too far away for me and harder to frame a subject if you’re both on the move.

No, the half press will not do anything. You have to push all the way down. I like this better. AF is completely disengaged. With my settings, when you press half shutter it doesn't do anything. Hope that helps.

The battery is more than strong enough to leave it on. You can't shoot spontaneously if you keep turning on and off. I always have three batteries on me in case it becomes a long day.

Hello there. Informative video, just wanted to make sure that I have understood everything correctly.. so after the 1.4.1. firmware update GR iii and GR iii street edition are technically absolutely identical, because the GR iii now has the very same snap focus feature? and everything else is pure appearance? Because the last few weeks I have been searching for only a street edition just to be able to snap focus, but if the gr iii now does the same - the point of paying more is now gone. Could you clarify that?

Off the top of my head I can't tell you anydifferences, but there must be some. Maybe only cosmetic, but I personally wouldn't worry about street edition, unless I just wanted to be fancy or something lol but again, I haven't investigated the differences, if any, because they wouldn't be enough for me to switch. I think the question is do you want 28 or 40mm view - there is a difference between the III and the IIIx - just not sure about the street (and I don't believe much usage difference). I'm a relatively new GR3 user and love the snap focus features. As a street photography lover this was the biggest reason for getting the gr3 along with its discrete size. My question is do you pre-set snap focus as a user mode? And if so is that together with aperture, shutter speed etc? I used a basic preset for daylight shooting and noted that shutter speeds were really slow for low light even though I dialled up a decent ISO. Any thoughts/advice gratefully received!

Yes I set up a preset, in one of the videos, not sure which, where I explain it. On a sunny day I basically just leave it at 1/500, f/9 and auto iso maxed at 3200 with a snap focus distance of 2 or 2.5m (I go back and forth and can't find a definite preference yet). Anything less than 1/400 is possible blur depending on the action of you and the subject, and the f/9 helps give depth of field, while the auto iso allows for more light (not concerned about noise since I don't print street photos and can typically dial that out in editing.) That sounds like a perfect setup you just explained. Just use a shutter speed of at least 1/400 or 1/500 and you'll catch most thing in focus (just make sure to not 'jerk' the camera as you press the shutter). Hope that helps!

For some reason I always use manual. Others certainly use the other modes, and snap does work well with them, but I keep it simple/stupid for my small brain, set it all manual and use the auto ISO (which is a critical factor for me regarding settings) so I can just walk and shoot with no regard to each setting depending on the light/subject/etc. I don't use back button focusing, etc with the GR series cameras. I just make sure the settings are what I want before I start, then just start shooting. EDIT: and I'd stick with minimum 1.5m distance if I'm walking on a sidewalk, or maybe 2 or 2.5 if people are further away. It's a feel thing that you'll have to discover which works best for you. but the HIGH aperture is important - at least f/8 but better if you can go f/9-11.

Thanks Sky! I 'typically' use Highlight Weighted mode. However, I went back and forth a few times last year trying to decide which was best. I think I've decided Highlight Weighted is best, due to some blown-out street shots in some of the later videos. So my suggestion would be Highlight Weighted. Just understand that the jpegs will appear much darker than normal, as it's compensating for the low light and trying to keep things from blowing out. Just up the exposure in Lightroom and you're golden!

I'm not aware of a ricoh gr Iv?? And I'm not sure what you mean by 'remote focus.' If you can elaborate I'd be happy to answer your questions gerald. By remote focus, do you mean auto? or a remote control?

Thanks for the tip. I just got a GRIII and was wondering about this. What do you use as the maximum ISO value by the way? With these settings, it probably has to be raised when not shooting in broad daylight. Everything is a compromise :)

If I am shooting street photography on a sunny day, I typically go to a max of 3200 on ISO, though usually it never gets close to that. For cloudy, or evening I bump it to 6400, and really dont like going higher than that, but you certainly can. The only time I do typically go higher than 6400 ISO would be the night shots, and even then, I would normally use a tripod for night shots, so I would use a low ISO and long shutter speed. But handheld at night in a couple of those videos I believe I went higher than 6400, but the noise was expected. You can check those videos where I discuss that. To me, snap focus, is like having preset focal lengths and practicing to see how good I am at guesstimating distances, which becomes apparent when assessing the subject focus in any given image… the sharper the focus, the better my guess at the distance preset… and actually guessing distance is fairly precise - as it turns out

Snap makes it easy to just GO! No fiddling with settings, etc. This can be very helpful for those of us with eyesight going downhill. I hate having to stand and set my settings, etc once I'm out of the car. I like only having to adjust the snap distance, which I rarely do, and just let 'er rip for 45 minutes with no concern about focal lengths, settings, missing a great (in my mind) shot because my focus distance 'moved' or wasn't locked in. But of course, NOTHING wrong with good old zone focusing for a challenge!

The way you use the Snap focus wouldn't be like manual focus on any other camera and interpreting the zone focus? What would be the difference in using Manual and setting the focus distance to the same as the snap?

Similar but different Alexis. Yes, you could set the camera up for easy manual focus Zone Focusing (easier than most cameras), but the difference I see is you can easily switch your focus distances with a simple push of a button, or switch back to AF for portraits, which I do frequently on the street. So yes, it is similar to Zone, but you don't have to worry about settings slipping out of whack, focusing changing while you're moving around, and the camera's 'brain' is still working for you in regards to exposure. While Snap Focus can be said to be slightly slower than manual focus by a fraction of a second (for the Ricoh to actually focus and check exposure in a split second before taking the shot) but I find it to be more accurate. If you don't own a Ricoh, Zone Focusing is a good choice, but with the Ricoh, let the camera do the work and I feel the shots are just a little sharper than manual. Nothing scientific here, and open to opinion, but that's the way I see it, hope that helps!

That's about 7 or 8 feet! That'd be a little too far for me, but obviously we all adapt to our surroundings. I'd love to get back to DC sometime soon, however, I think walking around with a gopro strapped to my chest might get quite a few looks from authorities and survellience cameras - I'll hang back til the craziness subsides (if ever!) lol Are you typically snapping shots in the downtown area?

I just watched your video and it is 2 years after you posted it. As I just got my GR3 a week ago, I am learning and searching all I can about GR3 setting on RU-vid. One question about the setting on SNAP, when you suggested to set the Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO...assuming you meant we need to do all setting while the camera is under the "M" mode. With my GR3, I used the Fn key to turn on and off of the SNAP function. So that I can do regular shooting with the camera, and boom, if I need, I hit the Fn key and get into the SNAP mode right away.

That's teh method I currently use also. And yes, I typically only shoot in Manual mode, but nothing wrong with using other settings. Youll find the one that works best for you. Keep in mind, I use the auto ISO maxed at about 1600 or so, giving the camera the option of choosing the ISO.

The x with the 40mm lens would be difficult to get a decent amount of dof, not a fan of it, but also have never owned or used an x - but again, I don't like between 40mm-80mm lenses. Shorter or longer seem to work best for me, so that x doesn't hit the sweet spot for me.

Glad I found this, my GR came today and I took it out to do some night street photography and mostly good but a few images were blurry. So I will use snap focus for sure. Oh do you recomme turning noise enhance off or leaving it on? Cheers for the video 😊

Congrats! You'll have so much fun with it. Def watch some of my POV street videos as well as the NIGHT videos, which may help out a little. REgarding noise reduction, no, NEVER turn those features on in camera as they drain your battery, and can make your images look weird. I shoot all in RAW, so I have the op to adjust as needed (and reduce noise). If shooting straight to jpeg, at night, you'll have to experiment, but so much easier to post process for maximum performance. Key to most shots are to have a shutter speed at least 125 to 250 for general shooting (use high ISO at night, reduce in post) but for daytime street def no less than 1/400. That should help your blur. In general, blur will happen at less than 1/400 with bikes, and most moving objects. Go at least 1/500 if you can, smaller aperture, unless your going for depth of field, but for general shooting I dont care about distant objects, so I'll shoot 1/500 and f/9 if possible, all the way down to widest aperture if needed, as I prefer non-blur of the subject and could care less about the background. hope that helps. watch from POV video #8 on thru and you'll see some different shooting options. thanks!

@@smooth111012 Sensor isn't everything, but yes, you have a MUCH 'better' and bigger sensor with the GR - it's an APS-C, and is better than most average DSLRs out there.

Hi Abraham! My assumption is you're not using Manual? In order to use this setup, make sure you're in Manual mode, that lets you set your aperture to the f/8, then set your shutter at 1/400. Also, while you're at it, set your ISO to 'Auto ISO' and go into the menu and make 3200 your MAXIMUM ISO setting. This should set you up as needed. What set up do you have on the front of the GR III..filter? and which filter holder? GA-1 Plus 49mm filter?

Very good explanations .It seems to me Snap focus is more challenging with Ricoh GR III X than GR III (lens focal). I never know exactly if you must adjust Snap distance on 1 or 1,5 or 2 m to get pics not blurred...

Just remember it could be more about your shutter speed and aperture than the snap distance. No lower than 1/400 for street and keep your aperture at f/9 or higher. If you're just walking and snapping people within 10 feet, use 1.5 meter, if you're shooting a little more atmosphere then go 2 meter. But if it's just people walking close to you down the street, etc 1.5m typically is good. Also make sure to steady your hand when pressing the shutter button. It's possible you are 'jerking' the camera as you snap. Practice hitting the shutter while you walk, on the fly, without moving the camera in a jerking motion. Hope that helps!

Hello: Nice video and well presented. I have a question, however. While I believe that "snap focus" is a neat feature on the Ricoh, I don't see why that feature offers anything more than using a manual focus lens on any 35mm digital camera. Is it the size of the Ricoh that makes it more attractive? Is it the size that offers an extra bit of stealth? Other than that, I can't think of any reason why one would choose the Ricoh over any other 35mm camera with a manual focus lens. Thanks.

Manual focus requires adjustments, etc whereas the Snap feature is auto, but allows you to choose any of the settings. I don't own the company, or have the manufacturing details, you'd hav eto ask someone more connected with the company itself for answers. I'm just a photographer who likes the camera. Not at all. I like having the room for error. 40mm APSC is too close and too tight for hip-shooting (for me).

Snap focus should be in all cameras. Just got used to zone focusing on my Sony A7R iii. Only really tweaking the metering mode for different effects. Thinking of the Ricoh as a take with me anywhere camera. Undecided between the 40mm or the 28mm. I have a 28mm Nikon lens and using zone focusing on my Nikon F3 the focus scale on that is so wide you can just turn the camera into a point and shoot.

I imagine eventually snap focus will be on most cameras. Wouldn't think it'd be hard to add. But after using it I can say my zone focusing has become much better on my other cameras. Wouldn't know about zone focusing regarding the ricoh because the cheap focus wheel is busted! Thanks for the comment Stuart!

No one really knows the difference, kind of a mystery, but rest assured, Snap Focus is better than Zone focus/Manual focus - just is. But you'd probably have to get the exact answer from those youtubers that Ricoh supports and gives cameras to - that would not include me! lol

ISOAuto (max of 3200) and usually highlight weighted. be sure to check some of my videos, as I usually go into detail on each video about settings. hope that helps Emilio!

Metering mode is irrelevant because you are setting the exposure manually.

@@WingMan1964 well, if you're shooting street photography, while you want to use manual mode, you want the flexibility of not having to look at your viewfinder screen to make sure every shot is going to come out. So I use the auto-iso (maxed at 1600 or 3200) and also use Highlight weighted as a means to avoid blown out sky - which happens quite a bit on a sunny afternoon. I noticed it in a couple videos where I mentioned in the video I was OFF highlight weighed and using center weighted. So to summize, metering mode is important in my opinion, mainly to avoid blowouts (assuming we are both talking about highlight weighted vs center weighted). Your thoughts Essential?

I have a problem with my GR III. In manual mode, I set the aperture to f/9, shutter to 1/500 and Auto ISO with the limit of 3200. When I want to take a photo, my ISO blinks in yellow with the text AUTO ISO 3200 and the value does not change. Is it a software problem or a wrong settings? I have system version 1.50. Thank you in advance for your answer.

sorry for the delay - have you figured out your problem yet? Sounds like you aren't getting enough light into the lens. Remember, those settings require typically a sunny day, or at least 'bright.' Shooting on a cloudy day should still be ok, but it doesn't hurt to go to 6400 if you have to. It get's a bit noisy (grain) but doesn't bother me when it comes to street photos. Interested to hear your progress on the issue Kubinsky!

The last part where you set the camera on Manual and use snap focus is confusing, to me. Are you saying that when set to "snap", the TV and AV are set and the distance 1.5 meters that the camera has no need to focus? You video is very helpful and well done.

Hi Rick, yes, when you set to 'snap' in manual mode, just like any other focus mode, you are still choosing the aperture and shutter speed. To be clear, I'm not in 'Manual Focus' mode, I'm referring to Manual 'settings' mode. The only focus mode I'm in is SNAP ONLY. In Manual settings, I set the high shutter speed to avoid blurring (usually between 1/400 or 1/500) a high aperture to get maximum depth of field and clarity (between f/8-11), but I also set ISO to AUTO, with a max of either 3200 or 6400, so the camera is choosing the ISO, because I'm not concerned about the noise I may get. But the exposure has nothing to do with being in snap focus mode, auto focus, etc. Hope I understood the question and hope that helps Rick.

The best explanation of the snap focus feature I've seen! Thanks for this video! I have a GR II and a GR IIIx and never really used Snap Focus so far; I wanted to work on it but I always tended to postpone it because it wasn't clear how to set it up / use it. Today I'm finally getting around to it and I came across your video which really helps! Just a question though, if I create a preset with the Snap Focus setting how can I lock the aperture to for example F8 or F9? Do I have to set it to Manual mode?

yes, set it to manual, set your shutter speed (1/500) then set the aperture, then IMPORTANT use auto ISO so the camera decides how much light to let in, but won't blur the photo. Hope that helps my friend!

Look at Anthony going all the way to f/11!!! lol Actually I need to try that, no reason it wouldn't work (or even be better). Curious for conversation, any reason you chose Center Weighted instead of Highlight? I went back and forth all summer, then noticed a few blown-out window/building reflections so 'think' I'm sticking with Highlight weighted. More experimentation this spring.

@@DozierGraphic I've been shooting in this setting for the past 4 years it is my set it and forget it and in respect to traditional old school manual focus style photography. Most will say that going at f11 is just too much however I beg to differ. The only obvious issues are if you're in a very dark area obviously you would just adjust accordingly. I've always used Center weighted however to be honest I am experimenting with highlight weighted. With the gr compared to my x100t I'm learning to use exposure compensation a lot more instead of messing with shutter aperture and ISO. I've been wanting to start a channel for a long time but just don't know how haha, I've been watching you since day one.
