I have all three versions and kept one…GR II. I find the GR II lens has more pop 3D kind of rendering. The flash is a great tool especially combined in black and white high contrast scene. It took me close to a thousand shots on the GR III just to decipher if it’s a keeper but I find the GR II is more than what I need to satisfy my cravings. The GR I is the same with 2nd version without the ability to connect with your phone. The extra megapixels on the latter one is really useless even if you’re printing. The cost alone will deter you to something more versatile (but still pocketable) like a Sony RX100 series. My suggestion is if you have the money and can’t find its older siblings then get the GR III. But if you have the first or the second, save your money or have a mini vacation and enjoy.
I have the GR1 after all the hype that it is a goid camera gor street / travel photography. To sone extend it is but nowadays there are many mirrorless cameras which can match it or better. I ceratainly would not buy the GR3 at its current price. At the GR3 price, I can easily buy a better canera like the Canon M6 Mk2 with a 22mm f/2.0 pancake lens. Or much cheaper if I choose the Canon M200. The positive film mode on the GR1 is good though. However, the M6 Mk2 will win due to its 32Mp sensor with a better tracking AF capsbility. It is slightly bigger but it also has a better grip and more lens options should you need it. The GR3 is just over priced and without a built-in flash, it is inconvenient when you need a bit of fill light.
Hi Eric, it wasn’t the image quality that was my deciding factor in keeping my GRIII (3) but the IBIS - that, for me, has been staggeringly useful and fun and broadening the range of when I bring the camera into play vs leaving it in my pocket. Thanks always for your GR videos 🙌

Great video! I’ve a gr2 which I love and a x100f which is better in low light but during the summer it’s just been gathering dust as it’s not pocketable. I mainly just document the family and having snap mode, my children running around hasn’t been a problem. However, now it’s getting darker, I’m more likely to be taking shots inside and I’m finding I can’t rely on the gr2 in this situation. I’m thinking about trading the x100f for a gr3 or gr3x. How do you find the gr3 when shooting inside with the family? Is my logic sound? Is the gr3 better than the gr2 in this regard? Love to hear your thoughts. Love the positive film effect on the gr2. Any chance you can do a video showing how best to use the on camera flash and what a good go to settings is on a gr2.
Believe me or not, but I'm shooting vlogs often with the GRII and much prefer it to the III as far as video goes. Also for photos - positive film is better on the I and II. I'm thinking about the IIIx for that 40mm lens, I think it would be much better for photos :) but overall I think GRII is the perfect camera.
Recently upgraded to the Ricoh griii based in your Ricoh challenge. Love the Ricoh and the shooting experience. Just sold off the rest of my Fuji gear and concentrating on making better images and capturing the moment rather than focusing on all the gear and lens combinations. That for setting me free! My wallet also thanks you!
Parfois j'ai l'impression que mon GRII était plus net et avait un meilleur rendu des tonalités. Je l'aurais gardé s'il n'avait pas tant de poussières sur le capteur. J'utilise désormais l'adaptateur GA1 et un filtre. Le GR3 est un bon appareil mais je n'ai pu m'y attacher comme à mon premier.
If it about cost, then a old Kodak point and shoot from a second hand store will do for $10. The GRiii/GRiiiX is well worth it for me. IBIS for hand held slow shutter speeds are a wow! I can’t believe I have sharp photos at 1/15 shutter speed hand held. Again if you can’t afford it then yes, I am sure you can find many ways to justify why not to upgrade. And yes, GR one and two are great for there specs.
Yes, but that's the point with this GR thing. I can find a 6D, Nikon whatever at same or lower price that could be better, but we're not talking about anything comparable. Who buys the Ricoh just want the size, and the fixed lense. Now, with these 2 in mind, what other APS-C is there on the market that can match ? Not too many... XF10, X70 may be, but that's about it I think. Otherwise if we go with interchangeable lens camera, many are there at this kind of intro price. But again, I believe that's not really what the GR should be compared to...
Not much of a difference on a 1080p stream and both being shot during the day. Take this out at night, shoot at 1/4th, let's see the results then. :) Good video nonetheless.
Question, I'm confused, it looks like you are comparing GRII to GRIII from the photos of the back of the camera. The GR didnt have the lever in the back? Let me know.. thank you ! Great Video!
Hi Eric Nice review of the two GR cameras. It's too bad that Ricoh hasn't addressed the problems with the GR series while they continue the high price for a poorly designed camera. I think I'll save my money and check out some other brands for a compact camera. Best wishes Duane
@@ericrjennings Screws, check your screws on either model, they tend to get loose and are a pain to find since Ricoh (A-holes in this regard) refuses to sell them and they want you to send the camera for putting the screws at 100+ expense. Native GR II color profile sucks too (bluish/grey cast), but one can create a good one in LR. Dust bucket ? Yeah... Sharpness/mpx count is unbelievable on the GR II and seems to closely rival at 24mx but it's a different lens/group/element on the III. Any GR I II users will miss the exp. comp. rocker and the flash. Those upgrading will enjoy much better noise in dark scenes, closer macro, higher mpx count, Ibis and face recognition. Yet, my GR II broke a while ago (could find a new Fuji X70 at good price then - It's a good camera too with better jpeg colors out of the box) but still missing my old GR , and I'm still debating if I want to find a good deal on a used eBay GR II as I had and enjoyed or should go with the GR III (around 850 new which is anyway very low for what this camera can give). The comparative video is good but stays too much in full well lit scenes, It'd have been nice to see the noise from a dark forest shot or dusk scene at high Iso on the III vs the GR I or II. I think this is where the strongest point of the III could actually be. That, and I believe better DR. Thanks for the insightful video anyway...
Yeah I totally feel this. I wanted a GRii last week and I couldn't find any decent ones for under $800. I decided to go with the original GRi for $500 and I just got it today. It's already blowing my mind 🤯 I don't need wifi, I'm totally fine just inserting my sd card into my computer
@@adamhymel2386 did you get yours off ebay? How did you know you could trust the source? I found a couple of GRs for $500 as well, really considering pulling the trigger. They’re both from Japan.
