TRAVEL TO ICELAND WITH ME: www.trovatrip.com/trips/icela...
The Ricoh GRIII was a hailed camera by the street photography. Coming from the Leica M6 + film photography equipment, I was a bit skeptical of going back to a digital point-and-shoot. The snap focus feature was the only thing that made me consider even making this video because it's so similar to zone focusing on manual lenses. This camera, albeit a perfectly fine tool, is not for me. I don't like having an LCD that'll distract me from trusting my instincts. I tended to the screen's exposure way more than being present with the moving environment around me. The RAW files are just okay too; they're nothing to cheer about.

You really have to spend some time with a GR to fully appreciate how good it is, and I mean months. The snap is great. I'm finding that the more I use this camera, the better my images get.

A couple of things, none of which are a critique of the video: First, grabbing a GR series camera (or most cameras?) and learning on-the-fly, it can be a bit hard to fully appreciate the subtleties, but I think you picked up on the important points of the camera (body size, APS-C sensor, snap focus, nicely placed controls). Second, snap focus is great as mentioned, but how you set the snap distance can make a huge difference in how beneficial it may seem. My preferred method is to assign Manual Focus to the Function button on the back of the camera and set the touch screen to "touch to focus". So now as I walk around with the camera in manual focus if I see something interesting I touch the screen to set the new focus point (yes, even in MF it resets the focus to the new distance) and now I can fire away and it won't refocus until I touch the screen again or toggle it off MF to AF. This is a very quick way to reset the focus distance and makes the camera incredibly quick to use. Of course if I want to switch to AF, I just toggle it by pressing the FN button. And finally, just to give some perspective to my comments, I have an M6 (20yrs), GRiii (10yrs, including the GRii) and the Fuji X100V (just over a year). They are all great cameras, but the x100V will be for sale soon, as the GRiii just works for me...

I loved the look of the Fuji X100V which I owned for a short time, but for me there were too many things to adjust and think about. I've had my GR1 (just ordered a GR3) for a while now and with snap focusing it's so simple to use and allows me to concentrate on getting the photos.

I love this camera... image quality, sensor, and body size, built in lens cap, built in ND, wifi, usb-C, super compact, etc. My only complaint is the cheap feel of the wheel on the back, it feels like its going to be the first thing that breaks. I would love to see some improved control surfaces that use a hall-effect sensors so they will last "forever" and keep up with the constant pressing and turning, etc.

I find this shooting style very uncomfortable, where you just walk up to a guy as he's looking at you, take a picture and walk away. Even using two hands on a ricoh feels like a bit much. In my city if you tried this then people would confront you and you could even lose your camera. I use the gr-ii and I shoot from the hip mostly, very much like how you shot the guy smoking. Hey, also don't be so hard on yourself, the smoking shot is great, I don't feel like the background is a problem because he's clearly the subject and you can see the environment and also the slightly out of focus is not an issue either.

I think you'd have a better time if you set it to snap focus instead of relying on the "smashing the button" for snap focus. When in snap focus you can quickly change your zone by holding the macro button and using the scroll wheel on the top. But still not as nice as using an M-camera for sure. Mine doesn't replace my Leica, but it replaces my iPhone. Also, I would recommend people buy the GRII, at less than half the price, (or GR I which is the same as the II minus wifi) instead of the III. The GR I and II have flash, better sharpness, better battery life and the positive film looks better.

Ya man, I love my GR. I used the GR1 forever until it started to fail on me so now I'm using the 3. I quickly figured out to keep it in snap focus mode because when I was using full press I'd miss shots since the af was hunting from the previous focus point. I didn't know that about using the macro and scroll to change zones. So useful and thanks. I'm been using a GR forever and didn't know. Now I can replace U2 from 1m to something else. Much appreciated!

Great vid. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should get a simple street photography camera, and which one it would be. I think the X100V still just edges out the Ricoh for me, because it has that gorgeous "Take me with you, everywhere" aesthetic, and the Fuji film sims I love so much

While I do appreciate you making a video with a camera I'm thinking of buying, I have to say it was quite a pain seeing your style of taking photos. There's quite a difference in taking a photo and making one. Spray and Pray couldn't be more far from the process of making art/streetphotography for me. Curiously the only photo I consider quite good, with a subject and story is the one you considered cluttered and out-of-focus - the man smoking, alone, wrinkes in the face and hands sharing the same look with the other two sitting alone. Human loneliness for me. Anyhow, instead of the other "fast food youtuber" you suggested, I suggest you seeing what Adrien Sanguinetti has done with the same camera. I wish you all the best.

The only thing stopping me from upgrade from the old 16mp Fujifilm X70, is: 1. No flip up screen for waist level shooting 2. I hear the buttons and dials break very easily. If they could fix those two issues I'd drop the cash tomorrow, because I'm tired of the low res image quality of the Fujifilm.

I think the griii x would have been better for your style of photos? (more bokeh, and no need to get as closte to your subjects) but of course, the griii x has the same shortcomings as the griii.

Have you ever had an aggressive interaction while doing street photography?
@chrisathanasiadisphoto
@chrisathanasiadisphoto 2 года назад
I'll answer for whatever it's worth. I've been doing street for two years and have become quite obsessed. Yes, I've been confronted a lot...it's part of it. I've developed techniques to keep the confrontations down that help tremendously but there's no way around it. Some people don't care about your photos and will tell you about it.
@09_johnpatrick

@@chrisathanasiadisphoto Thank you so much for this! I've been wanting to do some street photography but this fear of confrontation is holding me back. but I'll definitely work on my confidence and maybe steal some techniques from the pros haha
@chrisathanasiadisphoto
@chrisathanasiadisphoto 2 года назад
@@09_johnpatrick Def not a pro but if you do try these methods then you'll avoid unnecessary conflict. 1. Never make eye contact. 2. Never drop your camera after you've take a shot. If you've been spotted, keep it up and point your camera at something else like you're shooting it. 3. Start shooting at more touristy places where cameras are more common to build up your confidence. 4. Shoot like a tourist. Hope it helps :)

The GR is not a crop sensor camera. The sensor of the GR covers 100% of the image circle of the lens on the GR - there is no crop of the sensor into the image circle of the lens. For comparison: something like a Canon EOS 850D is a crop camera, because its sensor is APSC but the camera takes lenses with an image circle covering Kleinbild - incorrectly known as "full frame", so the sensor of the EOS 850D crops into the image circle of a lens with an image circle larger than the sensor area. Part of the problem discussing photography formats is that most people don't understand photography formats. The GR lens has been designed to match the sensor. As a "system" or "format", the GR takes advantages from that design that an actual crop camera does not because its lenses where not designed and optimized for the sensor size. Please be precise when discussing formats. BTW, at 3:00: why the heck did you not shoot the blue sky with the heart shaped cloud/jet stream pattern and the red awning in one frame?! That scene was BEGGING to be framed. When you said "this looks sick" with your camera pointing up, I thought that's what you saw.
@samguw
@samguw 2 года назад
I'm quite interested your explanation but I'm finding it a little hard to fully understand. If the sensor fully covers the image circle of the lens, wouldn't that result in an 18mm FOV instead of 28? Ricoh even says in their site that it's a 28mm equiv fov. By your explanation, is the Fuji X100V not a crop sensor too since the lens is optimised for the sensor? Which would mean that none of the fuji cameras are crop because they only take lenses that cover an APSC format. And from what I understand, the term "crop sensor" is in relation to 35mm equivalent which means that even if a system is optimised, as long as it is smaller that the 35mm format, it is by definition a crop sensor camera. I'm a little confused by what you said. Also, I'd love to know more about your phrase "incorrectly known as full frame". isn't 135 film 24x36mm which is the same size as full frame digital sensor?
@JP1050x
@JP1050x 2 года назад
The digital camera GR is an APS-C crop sensor camera. The film GR is a 35mm film (full frame) camera. APS-C (similar to Kodak Advantix APS) is a crop format because it’s smaller than the traditional 35mm (120) full frame format. You can put what ever lens in front of the APS-C GR sensor, and it’ll still be a crop sensor camera.
