Nice video! You bought up an interesting point about these GR cameras that is often overlooked. I think a lot of people are reticent to use the crop modes because they feel that they'll lose out to the lower resolutions. The fact is that 15mp and 7mp images are totally fine for social media. I think that I'll be experimenting with all these focal lengths to diversify my photography in future. Cheers

My favorite focal length used to be 35mm on my Fuji X100 but I switched to 28mm with a Ricoh GRIII and a Q2. The first reason is that I like to have some context around my subject and,also secondly, because it gives more possibilities of cropping.
Thank you for your comment. I completely see your point. I do alot of cropping at 28mm as well. Although, I wish I could get in closer more often ,at 28, and utilise the whole sensor without cropping. I find it is great for landscapes and seascapes with people in the scene, though, and also architecture style street photography. Have a great week.
Thanks. I appreciate it. There are many tools to upscale photos, but I was surprised that when I zoomed into the cropped photos, they looked absolutely fine.
Great video, liked and subbed immediately. I get people who are prejudiced against crop modes, but they really need to break that if they're using a GR, because what makes this little camera so convenient for crop modes is the razor sharp lens & image stabilization combo. 15mp 35mm crop photos are near perfect, and even 7mp 50mm crops are more than OK for digital use (blog posts, social media, etc). The ability to get sharp and beautiful images at 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm makes the GR one of the most versatile cameras on the market. So unless they're getting large prints, I encourage anyone who owns this tiny pocket rocket to use, at least experiment with, the crop modes more.

Thanks Joe, i am really enjoying your videos. I watched the other one of yours going through the various jpeg profiles. I have ordered a GR3 diary thats all i could get in Australia. Everything else on back order till end of July. Also interesting is the crop modes in this video, so very helpful. I am also interested in how you set up this selfie stick. Can you explain how to set up and use for the GR3 please. I love the tripod on it so small to pack away. Thanks in advance.

I have a disability, so the selfie stick, literally just screws into the bottom of the camera and I use it to hold the camera. I cannot use it without one. I have a video on setting up for night photography, but I do not have one yet for setting it up in general. Check out this video by this street Photographer on setting it up. @@joeredski thanks so much. Also loved the photos of Brighton Beach, our go to beach when we used to live in London before emigrating to West Australia many years ago. The beach area hasn’t changed much over the years. In my beatnik days we used to have Raves down there. Now I’m older but still like offbeat things. My camera has yet to arrive. So taking notes for when it does. I’ve been and still will be a Fuji user, as I love their jpegs too.
While this sensor crop allows different focal lengths this method doesn't replicate the depth of field produced by an equivalent lens. You may get compression and achieve subject isolation with framing but not DOF.

You’re absolutely right that using the crop modes on the Ricoh GR III/GR IIIx doesn’t replicate the exact depth of field you’d get with a true longer focal length lens. While cropping does simulate different focal lengths in terms of framing and compression, the depth of field remains consistent with the original lens, so you won’t achieve the same background blur or subject isolation as you would with a longer lens at the same aperture. That said, for my style of street photography, the difference in depth of field isn’t a dealbreaker. In fact, varying depth of field isn’t something I focus on much in my street photography work-I’m more interested in capturing moments and compositions. The convenience of having a compact, versatile camera that allows me to quickly change my field of view without swapping lenses is a huge advantage. In most situations, the slight difference in depth of field doesn’t detract from the overall image or the story I’m trying to tell. The crop modes provide me with the flexibility I need, and for the majority of shots, they meet my creative needs perfectly. So while your point is totally valid from a technical perspective, in practice, the trade-off is one I’m happy to make for the benefits it provides in the field. Appreciate the insight!
I did a crop test between 40mm and 71mm bummer is that there isn't any actual compression it's just the optical illusion from cropping. Would be nice if there's a firmware or next gen that does provide that.
Hi Joe, nice video, very interesting option. Regarding details of these crop modes, have you seen differences in details and sharpness between GRIII and GRIIIx? I’ve heard GRIII is noticeably softer than GRIIIx. Thanks!
Appreciate your GR videos. Question: why not just crop in post? That way you aren’t limited to 3 focal lengths. Does that make any difference to image quality as compared to the preset crop modes?
My Fujifilm XF10 has this feature, 28, 35 and 50mm. I have two questions. Are these just digital crops in camera and if they are does that mean that any distortion (barrel effect for example) of the 28mm setting get carried into the crop? It would seem to. me that must be the case.
Thanks for the comment. They are digital crops, but I don’t see any barrel distortion. You don’t get much barrel distortion with these fixed lens cameras.
