The Ricoh MF-1 is a pretty unique and powerful camera for what looks like a point and shoot. It offers manual focus, aperutre control, 3 photo burst mode on film, double exposure and more! In this video I test out a roll of Kodak pro image 100 in the MF-1 to see if this budget film camera is a hidden gem!

Two questions! Did that lens hood come with it? Or what lens hood are you using AND have you found any sort of manual for this camera? Searching everywhere. Thanks! Great review.

How do you use the hotshoe for external flash?

This looks really cool, might be tempted to pick one of these up as a throw around camera although technically I did get a GRII cheap for that. How has it held up a year later? Any issues and were you able to find the manual?

Interesting compact camera : ) I think film compact cameras require more talent from the users than DSLRs, I like your photos with it, even the motion blur looks expressive.

Thank you for the kind words and sorry for the late reply! Compact film cameras can add a bit of a challenge to capturing the image you want haha The photographer often has to bend to the whims of the camera rather than the other way around but when you find one that meshes with your style it can open up a lot of possibilities that cannot be achieved with other systems and cameras!

If Pentax with their upcoming new design compact analog camera does something similar to this I will be VERY happy. A compact camera with loads of manual settings will be fantastic. Not to mention rangefinder focus and a flash. Now that would sell like hotcakes.

Thank you for the comment! Something in line with the MF-1s features but with modern and faster optics would be fantastic! I don't know what direction pentax will go in, but I got my start on pentax film cameras and have always been a fan so I hope to cover it on the channel!

Very nice, might look into this. Whats the max ISO/ASA on this? Been looking for a budget travel manual point & shoot.
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture Год назад
Thanks for the comment! The max you can get off of the DX code is apparently 1600 iso but with the exposure comp you could probably do some high iso push processing! It's something I should test out when I have some time. So far its been great for a daily camera and so it should also work well as a travel companion.

How do you focus manually with this camera? Does it give an indication in the viewfinder or anything?
@TheWholePicture
@TheWholePicture Год назад
Thank you for this question! Sorry, I didn't clarify this. The MF-1 offers auto focus or scale focus. In the thumbnail you can see markings for infinity to 0.6m but there is no feedback in the viewfinder or a focusing mechanism like a rangefinder. Most of the time I just set it to 2.5m or infinity but it is nice to have manual close focus when you need it! Thank you for the comment! If I do a proper review I will try to clarify this.

Is the exposure compensation only full stops or does it do half stops?

Hi mate, great camera. Will have a look at the used market now. A question: are you going to make a video of your Kowa H? It’s such a RARE one. No one talks about it nor mention.you are the first person To own this camera which is insane. I only saw it in a picture didn’t even know it was real. Keen to see a video reviewing such a gem. Cheers

@TheWholePicture Год назад
Hello and thank you for the comment! You have a good eye! I often have the Kowa SW in the back of my videos. It is one of my favorite cameras and I own both a black and silver model and use them frequently! I wrapped up a project that used these cameras so I might have a good chance to talk about them but they are truly amazing compact options and you should pick one up while prices are still low! These hidden gems wont stay hidden for long.

@@TheWholePicture Seriously? mate listen, LITERALLY, you are the first person I know/see to have that camera. And not only one but 2 bodies. How cool is that? I have only seen the camera on Ebay while I was searching for other Kowa stuff and even thought it was fake because there is not enough info out there about the camera. No one really (cares) about Kowa and you just got 2. No words. I have 2 Set R2 bodies, working, and a 50mm lens. These are so RARE! Not even on Ebay you find a Kowa lens for my camera. I am selling it on Ebay but I am thinking in keeping it because of just that. Well enough words hehe Can I please ask you to do a video speaking and showing of those cameras? Close ups, listening the shutter etC? The design is superb and I find strange no one speaks about it. Or could you post some photos? I can send my email if needed. p.s: have looked into ebay and there are options from Japan, but hthe price man, just cannot afford by any means. The black one is pure gold though. thanks for answering, Cheers!

Haha! My video idea was going to be along the lines of "best camera you never heard of" for the Kowa SW. I also dont see much about them online, but hopefully I can do a deep dive and dig up some history on the camera when I do a proper review video. In general I have been wanting to talk about Kowa for a long time as they made some of the best optics and some of the most interesting cameras of that era, and they are still around today but mostly out of the mainstream photography space. Glad to hear you enjoy the R2! If im not mistaken there are some shared parts between the R2 and the SW (it seems many of their cameras have shared parts). I havent used one myself but I have some vintage Kowa cine lenses and want to get expereince with their SLRs and medium format cameras before doing a video on their history! Thank you for your interest in a video! And I'm glad you brought up the shutter sound, I have been wanting to put together a spreadsheet on shutter sounds and weight of cameras so it is on the to do list! I can send you some photos in the mean time though, my email is in the bio part of the channel page! As far as eBay goes, the prices are surprisingly better than what I see in stores here these days for the SW! under 300 USD is quite good for the silver and I saw a 600 dollar black model which is cheaper than what I got it for. It is creeping into the premium space of film cameras but I think its worth it!

@@TheWholePicture amazing stuff! I don't even need to say anything else, just that you'll be the first person bringing this camera up. Maybe wiser to stock pile a few more for the resell market after your video comes out 😅 (I don't have money but will keep an eye on eBay and following prices hehe). You have brilliant ideas, I'll keep following the channel and wait for them. Thanks for answering, enjoy your photography!

@@TheWholePicture Hey mate, how about the Kowa SW? heheh I haven't forget about this conversation here, and once in awhile come checking your YT channel to see if the vid is uploaed for last or not. Can't wait to see the K SW in full review. Cheers

He was not able to get readouts unless the lens aperture was 5.6 or smaller, because the widest aperture of the lens is 5.6, nothing faster. The lens is a 3-element (triplet) 30mm focal length. A triplet just is not going to give truly sharp photos at such a wide angle. Any faster aperture, and it's imaging would probably dissolve before your eyes. If you can accept those limitations, the rest of the camera offers a larger (hardly compact), full frame 35mm camera with a full set of user controls, making it both a P-n-S and subject to user input and control over its imaging unlike most consumer cameras of its era. At the pricing indicated in the video, there were probably few sold new, as the lens limitations would be a deal killer for many, even if they didn't use the faster apertures of a 2.8 lens. Their used asking prices seem a bit rich IMO at around $200. At $50 - 100, it could be a very interesting purchase.

Thank you for the comment and I appreciate your in depth take on this camera. The widest aperture on the lens is f/3.9, while performance at that F stop might not be great the camera still captures images in all modes wide open. It was just strange that the shutter read out would not appear on the top plate compared to other settings. I would also say the camera is compact for what it is, being similar in size to the Contax T-2 and Nikon 35ti. Of course, something like the Minolta TC-1 offers a similar level of control at half the size but also more than double the price. The MF-1 is a bit of an oddity in the compact camera market, offering higher end functionality but with lower end build quality but I feel it is a gem for the right person. No camera is perfect and gear is always about where you are willing to compromise. Thank you for the comment as it helps make future videos more accurate and informative!

Its hard to say but you can find them from about 250-400 USD depending on condition and accessories. I would look online at past sales in the UK for a better idea, but also just because it is valued at a certain price doesnt mean it will go for that right away. The lower you price it the faster it should go. Best of luck!

To be honest, the pics here ( at least as presented through RU-vid ) do not look anything particularly special. I'm in the UK but there's nothing there that would persuade me to pay a couple of hundred £'s for one of these. That lens is quite slow, and also, like several Ricoh digital point and shoot from the mid-2000's that I have owned, the colours seem quite restrained, even taking account of the rather bleached rendering due to the US sun.
