Let's get into the key factors to consider when looking at these machines.
PC Required
Melco machines need a separate computer to run. For Ricoma, there's a standalone computer system in the form of a touchscreen panel that's built into the machine, so you don't need an external computer. The perks of the built-in controls are features like hoop selection, one-step tracing, color selection, and other embroidery settings. Another positive of an attached panel is that it's mobile. You can roll the machine anywhere, without a computer as well. This is helpful when you're traveling to a tradeshow, craft fair, or even around your shop.
Melco really emphasizes their modular system, where you're able to connect a computer to the machine to run the operating system and network different single-head machines together into a multi-head option. The benefit of this is if one head goes down or stops due to a thread break or a bobbin change, the other heads can continue to work. This wouldn't work for a multi-head machine; if one head stops, all the others do as well. Also, the modular system is not unique to Melco. This function is available on Ricoma machines and other embroidery machine brands.
Machine Variety
The second difference is that Melco only has single-head machines, where they emphasize a modular system. Ricoma has a range of machines, from single head to multi-head machines. For a commercial embroiderer to scale with Melco, they have to buy more single head machines, which can be too expensive. If you are only looking for a few machines, a Melco might be a good option. But, if you're looking to run a 30 head embroidery shop, it will be ineffective to have 30 single heads instead of having multi-head machines.
Ongoing Support
Melco and Ricoma are very different when it comes to support and training. Melco doesn't offer lifetime support. So, after the warranty expires, you have to pay extra every month to get support for your machine. You may even have to pay extra depending on the type of machine and how long it's been out of warranty. With Ricoma, we offer lifetime support, which means you have access to our support team for the lifetime of the machine, even after your warranty expires. And even if you bought a used machine, you still have access to our team to get the help you need. We offer seven-day after-hour support so you can get the job down no matter what. You get a lot more bang for your buck with a Ricoma than a Melco because of the access to support and resources.
Company Values
The vision of both companies is also different. 10 to 20 years ago, Melco manufactured multi-head and commercial embroidery machines. However, they were acquired by a company called Bernina, which makes sewing and home embroidery machines. Now they focus on home and hobbyist embroidery machines because that's the main focus of their parent company Bernina. But Ricoma has always been in the commercial embroidery machine business, and that's why we have a wide range of machines to choose from. Our expertise in the commercial embroidery machines has driven us to invest on what commercial embroiderers want.
Machine Specs
Between the Melco EMT16X and the Ricoma MT-1501, Melco has auto tensioning, while Ricoma has manual tensioning. People are attracted to the automatic feature because it seems much easier than manual tensioning. Many people complain about setting their tension, but auto tensioning isn't always the best choice because you lose a lot of the control that you have with manual tensioning. Many commercial embroidery machines on the market have manual tension knobs because commercial embroiders want to have more control and be able to adjust on the fly.
When it comes to purchasing a large ticket item such as an embroidery machine, choose a brand and company that offers exactly what you need. Every situation is different, and you want to make sure you are making an educated decision that is based on your budget, your preferred workflow, the item you plan on embroidering, and your goals for the future.

Though I understand your point regarding auto tension, auto tension is nice and helpful. You have to remember small home businesses have your single head machines as well. Suggestion: it would be AWESOME if you had auto tension as an option! Like an On or Off option on the screen. That way one can take advantage of auto and turn it off for projects that require adjusting the tension manually.

Illustrator and Chroma are very different programs. Illustrator is used for design and designing vector files while Chroma is used for digitizing. You can import vector files into chroma to then begin your digitizing process. But as long as the digitizing software outputs a DST file format, it can work with out machines. Hope this helps!

But does your multi head allow for networking? From what I understand they don’t. You can only run one design at a time. I want the 4 head machine.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
If you mean can our multi head connect via Ethernet to a computer network to be able to send designs to the machine from computer, then absolutely. But when you said you can only run one design at a time, that’s going to be true for all multihead machines as they’re meant to run bulk orders. If you’re looking to do different designs because you focus on personalization orders, then you’re better off with multiple single heads and network them together, which ricoma single heads can achieve. Hope this helps!

I am the owner of 2 Melco's (EMT16 Plus and EMT16) and have used Brother, Baruaden and Tajima in the past for businesses I worked for. My 2nd machine I purchased used when I bought out another business, but I don't believe that each Melco cost is the same because the first one will have software and the additional ones will not. I imagine this will bring the price down a bit. Though I am overall satisfied with my machines, there are some things I hate about them. I've never seen a Ricoma in person, but they look like knockoffs of other brands machines.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
While the cost of the each one might be different, the economies of scale of multiple single heads still cannot beat the cost savings of a multihead. So while the second or third or fourth machine might cost a bit less, it will still be significantly more than a 4-head for example. Again, something to keep in mind for people looking to scale.

@@MikeJones-nq6nv Greetings Mike. If you have ever used an industrial embroidery machine, you've likely seen a hook that grabs the thread while trimming. The Melco has a sweeper bar (I forget what they call it) that is always in the way. I always jam my fingers into it and it is annoying. Another thing is that Melco loves to talk about their Acti-Feed system. I think it is nothing but a sales pitch. I'd rather have actual tension knobs. Lastly... I did the "upgrade" last June that was supposed to be awesome..... For me that is not the case. I know others (who use the same techs), that are VERY HAPPY with it. Feel free to look up Happy Hermit Embroidery on FB or IG. Send me a message and I'll give you my number. We can talk one on one if that is helpful to you.

Keep in mind that with a Multi-Head machine, if you are doing hats, you have to make sure that ALL hats are hooped exactly alike so that they are all centered. Where as with individual heads, you don't have to be exact and you can adjust each one to be centered. This goes for flats as well. Everything must be hooped alike.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
Yes, very true, that is something that needs to be very consistent on a multihead machine. But there are accessories and tools to assist with consistent hooping in this instance that are much more cost effective than going with multiple single heads. This is not to say that there aren’t use cases for multiple single heads, as they can be quite effective if you focus on one off jobs or personalization/customization. But the fact that ricoma gives you the option to have multiple single heads or scale with multiheads was the point of that part of the comparison, vs Melco only having single heads and no multiheads.

So if I was to buy a Ricoma 1. Is there anywhere in Colorado to get hands on training? How would a person who has never stood in front of a machine get the training they need to be successful? 2. If a problem occurred.... is their a tech in Colorado? Many of the social platforms say to only purchase a machine that can provide hands on training and have tech in your state. What are your thoughts on that. Thank you for your time.

Hi there, first off, the majority of our customers have never used an embroidery machine before. We have Hands-on, in-person training available free with your machine at our head quarters in miami, or online via video chat. We do have lots of customers come in for their training and the rest typically do that training online with a trainer. If you were to purchase a multi head machine, we end the tech to you for your in person training. We do offer a limited warranty that includes a tech coming to you if something goes wrong, but typically our customers call in via video chat and our team walks them through getting the machine up and running in no time. Ricoma is the manufacturers of our machine so we are the experts of our products and we offer lifetime support after hours and on weekends free with your machine. Our customer service is top notch. We also provide digitizing classes and free resources like facebook groups with ricoma employees tech and customers with options to chat with out techs to ask questions and get practice with professionals over and over again at no extra cost. We're very focused on education and making sure our customers are well trained and understand their machine. You'll always have us as a resource.

Depends on what type of item you’re doing right? If it’s 100 pieces of the same logo, yeah a 4-head is going to outperform 4 single heads every time. Why? 4 times fewer the set up. But if you’re doing 100 pieces all different personalized items, then 4 single heads is going to outperform because you would have to shut off 3 out of the 4 heads on a 4-head machine to run one item at a time.

This excellent comparison was done 3 years ago as of 11/30/2023. But things have changed, specially with Melco/Bernina. Melco/Bernina just introduced the EMT-16 PRO that has the same type of control panel as the Ricoma, it has built-in WiFi capabilities, and it has four or five built-in brands' thread listing from where you can select the colors of the cones you will put on the thread rack. I already have a Bernina B830 embroidery machine, and it can connect to the big machine very easily using the Bernina Embroidery that I already own.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 8 месяцев назад
Appreciate your input. Several key differences to note on the Bernina E16 Pro vs the Ricoma 10S panel (maybe we’ll even do an updated comparison video): Bernina’s is not multi-touch, meaning it won’t support sliding and pinching functions. In addition, it still has analog buttons around the panel and so it’s not 100% touchscreen. E16 Pro is also listed at $22k, while the Ricoma 10S is 30% less in cost while boasting a more advanced panel. But it’s about time Melco moved into the 21st century!

I can confirm the issues with Melco's "tech support". I bought an old machine and tried contacting tech support just to find where I could download a boot disk(something you'd think would be easy to find for an old machine)....I say tried because sales couldn't tell me if it was available and they don't let you talk to anyone in tech support AT ALL. Their phone system will just drop your call. I got someone to answer an email but then they never followed up and I ended up solving all my problems on my own by digging around.

I own three melcos and love them. I can fix them myself and every time I call for help I get an answer. As far as tensioning goes, changing on the fly through the software is great, as well as applying different settings by needle in the control software. You can set different needles to feed at different rates, cut lengths, tail trims and even tie ins. I think between my three machines I'm at over 100,000,000 stitches and nothing has broken yet. I'd recommend them. Plus I live in Denver and I can zip up there whenever I want and pick up a new set of thread rollers or even a Z motor, god forbid

When you assume that a pro setup would be 6 heads. The one point that is an advantage with the Melco, you can run several programs at the same time. AND, if one machine goes down, you don't need to take them all down to repair the one. Keeping the needle going up and down making money is very important for a small shop.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
Yes that’s absolutely true, but like we mentioned in the video, connecting multiple single heads together and run several different jobs/designs as you alluded to is not unique to Melco. Ricoma single heads can be connected in such a way as well. One other tip we would mention is that multiple single heads is good if you are doing very custom orders and personalization, therefore needing different machines to do different jobs, while multiheads like a 6 head would be good for volume and bulk orders.
@garycrumrine9538
@garycrumrine9538 3 года назад
@@ricomatv So , can you go into this a little deeper. In watching your videos, it was explained differently when connecting multiple single head Ricoma machines when stitching several different designs in a custom design scenario. You mentioned connecting machines, multiple computers versus one computer that could print different designs at the same time. Melco does this. Can Ricoma connect multiple single head machines, printing different designs at the same time? I guess my point is not everyone is interested in a multi head due to having to stop all heads to fix a thread break. Granted a multi head is the way to go if you are printing multiple items of the same design. I guess it is depending on how your business is structured. There is no right or wrong, but in your comparison you are comparing apples to oranges and not explaining the difference.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
Like we mentioned before, connecting multiple single head machines together to embroider different designs on each is not unique to Melco. Ricoma single heads can be connected together to embroider different designs. There are customers that do this regularly with 4-5 single head machines.

From these 2 locations we cover the entire US and also have a network of certified technicians that cover all major cities and areas. So while we don’t have a physical location in Dallas, we have several technicians around the Dallas/Fort Worth area and have many customers in Dallas and surrounding areas in Texas. Hope this helps!

One thing i learned is Melco sends direct to from PC to machine, already with the parameters and color settings.saving time on that setup, I have a Ricoma SWD, and been using it about for a month, and was always wondering why i need to re input the color order when it should be able to have it already set up. I own a CNC machine and when i send to cut something with specific bit, it knows what bit i selected,i don't have to go to machine to reselect bit. In other words. I'm imputing again the color order to machine again, when Ive already selected it and set on Chroma..maybe that's something to add for future OS update, like keep your color pallet matching the program so you save on this step. that's my 2 cents..although felt like 25cents :). Note, Laptops also can do the job. Mobil and light , although i prefer PCs

It’s not that hard to move a laptop around. On top of that the software can be updated better through computer rather than on a built in screen that will become outdated. You act like everybody is old school using only a desktop.
@ricomatv
@ricomatv 3 года назад
That might be your opinion but for half the people who have a Mac, they’d have to buy a new Windows laptop just for connecting to a Melco, and not everyone is willing or able to spend the extra investment, plus it does limit mobility. Something to consider as actual feedback from customers! Thanks for watching!
