I’m across the river in Canada and lucky enough every once in a while to see her and the B-25 flying

That would be awesome to see! Yankee Air Museum has a great collection of planes. Living on the opposite side of the state, we sometimes get to catch them flying to the air show at Oshkosh. You should check out the Thunder Over Michigan airshow in a few weeks at Willow Run.

My Uncle was a tail gunner in a plane like this in WW2. They picked the short guys for that job because of the difficulty of getting back there. He was about 5' 5". He came back alive but a lot did not because it apparently was the most dangerous position... since enemy aircraft would approach from behind. I've heard it was usually a crew of 18-22 year olds with the pilot usually being 20-22. ...glad you got to have such a wonderful flying experience.

that is awesome about your uncle. Both of my grandfather's were pilots, but neither flew in WW2. One flew for the USAF after WW2 and the other only flew as a private pilot since 1944. Flying in the B-17 gave me even more respect for the crews that took these into battle.

long, cold, dangerous missions and once the bombadire locked on target they were sitting ducks for flack until bombs away. My dad was in WW2 and became a private pilot after he got out. I was a passenger with him as a kid. Maybe you got to fly with one of your grandfathers.

yes, I used to fly with my one grandfather for many years. He flew until his late 90's and passed away at 99 this past May. I built an RC version of his plane and was able to show it to him before he passed away. Logged many hours flying his Arrow around Michigan and really miss doing that with him. I am thankful for the chance to do that with him growing up.

wonderful memories with your Grandfather .... My dad flew a Piper Comanche and before that a Cessna 172 - I have good memories of flying with him.

it is a great experience! You absolutely must go for a ride in a B-17. I wanted to do this ever since I was a kid and sure glad I did. The problem now is that I want to keep doing it!

What an awesome experience! The Collins foundation brings their Fortress and Lib around here every fall. I've got to take a flight on one of them for sure. What a great memory to have with your dad too! Jim

Thanks James. I hope to attend Bomber Camp some day and spend some time in Nine-O-Nine or Witchcraft. The last time I saw the B-24, it was painted up as All American. Speaking of Collin's Foundation's B-24, MotionRC released a large RC B-24 that was developed with the help of the foundation.

BRGT350 that's too funny! The Motion RC release of their new Lib is what lead me to your video! By your user name I think we have a bunch of similar interests? I've owned a bunch of Mustangs ( still have my 03 Mach) always loved WWII warbirds and recently have been getting into RC aircraft. Did get a chance to walk through the Collins's B24 and 17 but I gotta a flight on one of them next fall when they're back. Jim

Good guess on the screen name. I have used BRGT350 online since the mid-1990's when I bought my 1984 Mustang and decided since it was white with red interior, that I would add the 20th anniversary GT350 stripes. I took my initials and GT350 and have been using them ever since. 20 some years later and I still have the Mustang, but it has been heavily modified since buying it as a very rusted 2.3L automatic. It is now fully equipped with a Maximum Motorsports suspension, freshly built 302, and comes out for autocross races. Much like you, I have always had a great interest in WWII planes and that is what lead me to get started in RC a few years ago. I started with a couple of trainers and finally started to fly larger warbirds last spring. This year I moved into the big B-17 and a micro A-10. The new B-24 is next on my list. I have about 10 planes in the hanger of all different sizes. A few micros, a couple of civilian birds, and then the warbirds. Besides the PBY and B-17's, they are all E-Flite/Parkzone/Hobbyzone planes from Horizon Hobby. I highly suggest going for a flight on the B-24 or B-17. It really changes your entire perspective and worth every penny to fly on one of these historic bombers. The only problem is that you will want to do it again!

Nice work! By the looks of the weather, I'm guessing you flew mid-day Saturday. I was in the first flight on Sunday morning. I also posted a video here, but mine was much shorter than yours. I was using my Canon EOS Rebel, which is a fine camera, but not the optimal video camera (not enough memory even with the SD card), so I kept it to short bursts.... and also because I wanted to experience the flight and not just run the camera. I gotta get a GoPro!

thanks! Yes, I flew on the 3:00 flight on Saturday. We were delayed due to the F-22 Raptor and didn't get into the air until closer to 4:00. It started to rain and the thunderstorm was closing in, so I am thinking we were the last flight on Saturday. I used my Canon DSLR for the long distant taxi shots, iPhone for close up, and the GoPro for the POV. The GoPro works fantastic for events like this. The hard part is remembering the camera is above your eyes, so sometimes I hit it on things or think I am recording something only to find that things are in the way above my head. I really hope to go back and fly again, and glad you had a chance to go as well!
