Ride Boston's New Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail

Protected bike lanes are becoming less rare in many U.S. cities and I got to ride a fine new one in the City of Boston. Called the Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail, it is the beginning segment - about two miles so far - of a longer loop that plans to circle the downtown area.
The idea was to connect historic Boston places via a safe bike route that not only commuters could use to get about, but also visitors or residents wanting to further explore the city.
The segment features a lot of good design practices. Where it intersects with driveways or parking lots the drivers are slowed by having to meet the bike lane which has been raised to the level of the sidewalk. It also features ample #freshkermit (that's green paint) in areas to highlight possible conflict areas between motorists and cyclists. Additionally, some intersections have been built with some protection. And some environmentally friendly bits as well: permeable pavement and a bioswale.
There's one section here tha'ts center running - which, yes, always has its critics - but in this case it makes much more sense to put riders away from crowded sidewalks at North Station/TD Garden. I'd much rather ride in the freedom of the center versus contending with pedestrians and cars. Just imagine this scenario averted.
Big thanks to the good transportation folks from the City of Boston who came out to meet me after work with little notice to take a one hour excursion with Streetfilms!

Now they need to make a way for people to commute from suburban towns on a bike. That would do wonders for traffic.

Seriously!!! It’s so simple to solve the traffic problem… we need more cyclists!!

I recognize a lot of the infrastructure from the Netherlands, you did a great job, so the people can enjoy and save biking in there own town without helmets, like in my country.
@bonniesilva5162

Except, unlike in the Netherlands, in the bike lanes of here you will often encounter PARKED CARS, & trucks unloading deliveries. And you'd better wear a HELMET, not because it's the LAW (it isn't), but for your own safety...

I am so excited for this, I rode from Kenmore along the commons and thought I was going to get killed,the bike lane switched from side to side and did not have a barrier,just white paint that no one payed any attention to. Boston is a great city and will get back 10 fold what they put into bike infrastructure.This is great and I cant wait to see more...very smartly thought out and executed.

Collect signatures and petition local government. Yes, they're dumb, and you need to grab them by the hair and push their noses into problems. It's the same in the Netherlands.

You know when I see these videos I'm expecting being able to point out something that isn't safe at all, some cities like London like to have big names for some paint on the side of the street. This looks great though and is up there with some of the best Dutch bicycle infrastructure. Seperated from busy roads, cars don't have to cross the path to park, not a door zone and bicycle traffic lights this looks like the whole shebang for a relaxed bike ride through the city. You can lose the helmets now that you have this though. A job well done Boston, respect from the Netherlands

The counter is pretty cool. Any idea how the permeable pavement is holding up? Does it have a shorter life span than conventional pavement? % wise do you know how expensive it is to install compared to conventional AC pavement.

As a Dutchman I think I can say this looks excellent, only criticism is that there are not always seperating lines in the middle of the 2-way bike lanes, especially on the green surfaces.

If you actually come here and compare it to the Netherlands I think you’ll change your mind this is only the very beginning even 5 years later cycling in Boston kind of blows to be honest.. but I really hope my country can wake up and look at your country. Actually better idea we need you guys to come here and design our cities please and thank you 😂

Bravo, Boston! This is a great start, but the bike infrastructure needs to extend further out from the historic city center. As a student in the mid-1980s, I lived in the Back Bay near the Prudential Center. The Southwest Corridor Path on top of the Orange Line was just being built at that time. I suppose it connects to the bike loop in the historic city center, but the route up Massachusetts Avenue to Cambridge features just a white stripe delineating a bike lane that passes on the driver's side of parked cars. Of course, even a painted bike lane is a major improvement compared to when I lived there.

Boston is late to the global bicycle party (although first to buy the Bixi/ Blue Bikes outside of Montreal), so it is nice to see the city jump to high-end design. I couldn't believe they put in the Big Dig with no bike infrastructure, but the add-on path seems well designed. My thoughts would be to widen them or put one way paths either side of the corridor between North and South Stations, and to provide clear wayfinding to the ferries (commuter boats) along the harbor, which have always taken bicycles.

If you look you see a specialized bike traffic signal with its own sensors that activate depending on the presence of a bike.

I would like to see bike baricades so that traffic doesn't cut infront of bikers like me and other cyclists it's a must and more cyclists are wanting to bike in summer 2023 without watch tv and seeing accidentsnot only Boston has the bike lanes why not build bike lanes around each of the following towns like all of Natick Wellesley Framingham Sherborn Holiston Milford this needs to be addressed largely enough and making this happen will mean not to sit down on this it's getiing up off to get theproject on the way

@@catprog you can wear one of you want, just don't make them mandatory. If you feel safer by wearing one, all the power to you! But by making them mandatory, it reduces the amount of people willing to cycle, which is worse than not wearing a helmet

@@Arlae_Nova I don't know if it reduces cycling. Or if it is the infrastructure that makes helmets mandatory that is the problem. Either way without good infrastructure you don't get many riders.

the question concerns the city of Boston to all of Massachusetts is why can't someone step in and do the same green bike lanes from Boston Wellesley Natick Sherborn Framingham and don't forget Holliston i think large vehicles in general souldn't force cyclist off the road to begin with because Local driver in vehicles are yelling out their car and truck windows for us to get off the road this is a major concern and has been going on for several yearsplease fix this problem NOW "!"!"!"!"!"!"!"

I cycle in Winter all the time. Well not all the time, but 3 months out of the year. It's not a big deal. You just wear a damn coat and fenders are your friend. You can look up videos from the Netherlands, which I imagine is what inspired a lot of this design. You'll see a ton of people cycling in the dead of winter, because there's proper infrastructure to do so.

So good to see more and more people riding upright bycicles in their daily clothes at a leasury speed. Just as we do in the netherlands. So expand this infrastructure throughout every street in town. Get rid off most of not all cars. Oh yeah. And ditch those helmets. They are for streetracers not for cyclists. And they look silly!!!
@allgoo1964
@allgoo1964 5 лет назад
boele bakker says: "So good to see more and more people riding upright bycicles in their daily clothes at a leasury speed..." == No doubt!! Bicycle will take over the city only when the people start using it for the utility purpose. In US at least, bicycle is all about recreation(for fun). You carry a bicycle on a car to get somewhere to ride a bicycle.
