Mr. Hazo said this piece was made after he had to follow Jack Stamp to his house. They drove 25 miles in 15 mins. This piece is what that experience felt like for him desperately trying to keep up with Mr. Stamp. LMAO
I was First chair when i did this, and only cause i was a senior, the other first chair was like a genious and a sophmore lol- bro the keep up was real i remember SWEATING playing tis
Played this my sophomore year of high school, and it holds a very special place in my heart. My sophomore year happened to be right in the middle of COVID, so we were only going to school every other day, and our directors weren’t sure if we’d be able to put the piece together in the 3 weeks that we had to do so before our spring concert. But, by some miracle, we did, and the end result was incredible. One of the best performances I’d had throughout high school.
Played this my senior year. By far the most challenging piece of music I ever did with the high school band. But when everything finally starts coming together, it felt absolutely exhilarating to play this song successfully and accurately!! The looks on the audiences faces was particularly satisfying. This was probably a college level song and we got all superior ratings at our assessments (not really competitions, your simply graded on an individual level). This really would make a great marching band opener!!
I figured out what makes it so epic. The seamless Retardondo and accelerando, and the fact that part is short compared to the rest of the song so it hits you like a train because you don’t have time to process it’s true EPICNESS. It also sounds like it has no melody even though I’m sure it does.
We're playing both right now and arabesque is harder for 1st and 2nd horn, but ride is harder for 3rd and 4th horns. It's all the runs and rips that Hazo desperately loves to give us horns.
Got the pleasure of playing this back in 7th grade, I'm still haunted by my Marimba part. Curse the south for being so competitive, looking back this was absurd for middle schoolers, let alone 7th graders.
Blasting this while driving through Araluen (Croyden Rd, Perth Hills, Western Australia) is the best fun I've had. I'm trying to imagine listening to this (and John Mackey's Undertow) while driving through the twisty roads of Tasmania.
This brings back memories. This song was one of the songs in the marching band show of my high school...That was 16 years ago, during the 04-05 school year.
. I'm performing this as a bassoon for our spring concert. Just sight read the whole thing today. It's only my junior yr but.... I guess that's what being in the highest band gets you...... wish me luck.
This song is so nostalgic - played it back in 2005 and I was fighting so hard for 1st chair alto sax. didn't get it feels bad man, but the song is so hype i didn't care that much
its a scorching day in mid august.. You are doing sax sectionals inside and hear the drumline in the distance warming up with their cadences outside. Just a matter of time until you join them outside in that heat to run the opener, Ride. Running the same sets over and over again until exhaustion. sweating through your clothes, heels feeling sore and the words "heel to toe!!", "RESET" and "FROM THE TOP" start to become ingrained in your mind. The days fly by and before you know it the scorching heat has turned into the brisk cool air of an October evening and you find yourself in front of a huge crowd, competing against other bands in Scranton PA.. Drum major are you ready? Band are you ready?..
My highschool band played this at WKU not that long ago and we got a distinguished+ since we were the only ones to play this high of a grade piece. We also played o magnum mysterium. Both beautiful pieces.
Our all-county’s band just played this as a closing piece, and one of the best parts was that the band director also gave a speech giving the background of the piece (it was a whole comedy of it’s own). This piece is definitely good at expressing that frenetic stress 😂
I’m a flute player. Haven’t had to play this for band yet, but I might have to. Flute part looks like an absolute nightmare. In fact, I’m convinced that Samuel Hazo wants to torture the woodwinds, just looking at the first few notes.
SteadyRhythms try articulating "da da da da, ga ga ga ga." The "ga" shouldn't be a tongued articulation but rather a "kuh" sound. Then gradually start alternating da's and ga's faster and faster until your double tonguing! The end result should be a fast "dagadaga". It takes TIME so you're not gonna get it right away but it develops muscle memory. Hope this helps
The bells part up to measure 15 made me wanna jump of the school because the temos "Sonic, but with a line of crack" (luckily it was just an adution peice)
This was easily the most complicated piece that was ever in my HS marching band's repertoire. Marching to the ridiculousness that is its mixed meter was pretty crazy
Playing this in band, and I realize now that Samuel Hazo probably despises the flute section. Those notes, I swear, I didn’t even know the fingerings for anything higher than a Bb!
This song isn’t that hard if you think eighth notes and DO NOT TAP YOUR FOOT EVER (Except for the 3:4 section after the sax solo which is 🤤🤤) Just think of 7:8 as groups of eight notes. Connect a bar of 7:8 and 2/4 like this: 12 12 123 12 12 and repeat. If you struggle keeping up I recommend aggressive taping to the eight note subdivision whilst listening to your part in the recording. Other than that if you have any other issues or complications let me know and I will try to assist
I marched this in 2008 with fusion core drum and bugle corps. I was coming off of clarinet and learning baritone for it. Hellish piece to learn on 😂😂😂😂😂
Hey, does anyone know of any music like Ride by Samule. R. Hazo? I ask because this song is just so good and starts off so strongly that I've decided to use it as a character/series theme, but I haven't been able to find a decent, memorable theme for another character/series that's related. So, yeah, if anyone knows any songs so bombastic and distinct and catchy, please, let me know.
Nathan Ballard those are two amazing composers, arrows is awesome. I played the Darklands Symphonies by him and they are awesome. Arabesque isn’t too similar, but it is the best.
