Good job in demystifying this subject thanks Richard. Looks like My Route App is the way to go. I have the Nav V and have always found it clunky and buggy as you say. Just gone to a 1250GS Exclusive which comes with BMW connectivity so I think I am going to go with My Route app. I will use my Nav V just for the visual map ( don't like my phone on the handlebars) but other than that it is essentially redundant with BMW's excellent TFT and connectivity capability now on the scene. Biggest problem the bike is stuck in the garage for who knows how long ! All the best.

Thanks, Gordo. The 1250 and TFT is awesome. MyRoute-App's website is a definite winner, whether used with the Connected or (MyRoute-App's own) Navigation app. Let me know how you get on once you are able to ride again.

Excellent video Richard, really appreciate your time and effort. It’s good to see that the connected app, is a viable alternative to the Nav VI. 👍 I think the Garmin products are so antiquated these days, the processing power of them, compared to the latest phones, makes them so frustrating to use. On a side note, my brother has the new 2020 Africa Twin 1100 ES ATAS, which has Apple CarPlay. Once he had learnt how to set it all up, he’s really liking it, with the ability to display with various option of what type of map view you wish. He likes the Satellite view in urban areas, then switching to normal map view. I kinda think thats what BMW should be doing really, maybe that will be their next move, on the next generation TFT’s. Still on lockdown here in the UK, so itching to get out on the bike. Since lockdown, the weather has been amazing, but no riding allowed. 😔 Thanks again for an excellent video. 👍

Thanks, pal. I've used CarPlay on the Goldwing and it's very nice. It can run Waze, which is perfect if you're only going directly to one destination. That's a great point you mention about toggling satellite and map views. I used that a lot when planning routes to check 'exactly' where the drive entrances are for petrol stations and what not. They're easing restriction from today here (not sure entirely wisely!) so having a gentle ride on Sunday to test out a circa 250 mile (60 waypoints) route with Connected. And that will be the true acid test. But on face value, and with little nuances like careful waypoint positioning, it looks to be a great option. Certainly compared with the $900 Garmin!

Given that the route is already available on the iPhone via wifi etc from the computer upon which you designed the route; what is the advantage of then using the connected navigation app as opposed to the phone navigation app. which is in front of you anyway? I have found that a simple phone/headset connection is so much more reliable and simple than a three way bluetooth hookup involving the TFT. I may be missing something pretty simple here.

Good question Lex. Let me offer a view on that. If you prefer a phone for visuals, then the MyRoute-App website and MyRoute-App phone app, is a winning combo, because they're synched and I've found them to be reliable when using the Garmin/HERE overlay map. And I just use Waze if only going from A-B. The pros the Connected app has, is that the directions are much larger and clearer. And require less head/eye movement and therefore distraction from the road ahead. Additionally, the app records extra information to view when not on the bike, like fuel range remaining, miles to service and so forth. Plus stored favorite locations can be selected on the fly through the TFT while still riding. And (key for many) you can basically download entire maps of the world for 'free' to use offline. Now they do require you to be riding a BMW with TFT to use them, but equally for times when you have no phone signal, and occasionally when you may not even have a GPS signal, it means you're still going to be able to navigate. I hope this helps?

Thanks for a well explained tutorial Richard and the time invested. Been reading about iPhone camera problems that can't be fixed caused by vibrations through the handlebar mounts, have you seen anything about this?

I've put about 15,000 miles on my bike while my iPhone X is attached to it and the camera is still excellent, no problems. This is the setup I use on both my Rocket 3R and R1250GSA ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3mCZStvm3_Y.html

Hi, Richard, thanks for taking the time to put up some great and helpfull videos. I have a question, similar to one already posted. With the set up you have (I have the same), what is the point in having a Nav 6. All my connectivity issues seem to be by trying to utilise TFT and Nav 6 for all connections which leads things get a bit confused. As you have said in another video Cardo - Phone - TFT works, but I feel I need to hook up the Nav 6 as well or its been a waste of cash. What I would like is all the functionality of the dash for calls/music etc, Nav 6 for directions and safety camera warnings. But this combination appears to be impossible. Cheers Davy

The Nav 6 has three specific advantages. Missed way-points can be skipped via on screen button; the system will re-route (not just recalculate); your laptop (Basecamp) and device (Nav 6) can both be on the exact same map and version. I.e. If it looks good on your computer it 'will' work on the Garmin. This makes it hard to beat on a complex two week vacation, when if you get off track you could be in trouble. But personally, I would not buy another, because their pros are not justified by the inflated price. Personally I do not pair my Nav 6 to the TFT or my intercom. It means no (annoying anyway?) voice prompts, but zero conflicts. If you have your headset paired to your phone and your phone paired to the BMW TFT. Then with the Connected app open, and voice set to on, you can have voice commands and directions on the TFT in the Navigation screen, and operate phone via contact list and music via artist/playlist. I don't do that because I have many playlists and Connected doesn't seem to display them all (bug). And I don't want to take my eyes off the road hunting for a contact or a playlist, when I can simply say 'Hey Siri... ring Jerry,,, set reminder to call Steve... text Tony... play Playlist Rock Classics, through my Cardo PackTalk Bold mesh intercom. They only negative with my set up is I have to turn voice prompts off for Connected Navigation, to return audio control to my phone, otherwise Siri won't talk to me (Connected bug).Your conflict is arsing I suspect because you are probably pairing your headset to both the Nav 6 and the Connected TFT. That's a clear bluetooth audio conflict it seems. The way I think of it, is you've got to be getting your audio from a single source. It's either your Navi, the TFT or your Phone. Your phone gives you the most flexibility/benefits and it can pair to both your headset and TFT without conflicts - just the nuance with the sound setting on (no Siri) or off (Siri available - but only if the headset is turned on 'after' bike has connected to the phone first!). What really needs to happen is a common protocols forum between bike manufacturers, GPS manufacturers, intercom manufacturers and phone manufacturers, so that everyone is on the same page re: software compatibility. And then companies like BMW should provide a comprehensive step-by-step video library of what is compatible and how best to configure it based on what permutations / equipment are being utilized. I know... frustrating isn't it!

@@RichDunn Thanks for making the effort and taking the time to reply. It helps me a lot. You are correct I have been trying to connect the headset to 2, sources, currently the TFT and the phone, Siri doesn't appear to work and neither does "hey cardo". Problems are compounded by the "start up" sequence also. As you say they basically need to get their act together and produce and stick to a standard. I'll pair as you have and see where I get to. Another issue u have is the advisory speed white square, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't , probably due to the above mentioned conflicts. However thanks again for giving me a sense of direction. All the best.
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 4 года назад
@@davidprentice1764 The speed advisory white square is purely down to two things. (1) You must have the Connected app open and communication established (TFT shows phone icon). And (2) You must have Speed Indicator toggled to On in the TFT Settings. You definitely have the same issues I was having. My view would be delete all pairings with the Garmin. Delete pairing (must be a: 'forget this device') between headset and TFT. Set voice prompts in Connected app to Off. Then, so long as you wait for the phone to connect to the TFT (phone icon) before you turn on your intercom. You should be able to use Siri and Cardo commands to control your phone and music. And the Connected app to display loaded routes (which seem to work most reliability using a Google Maps derived GPX) in the Navigation screen. Remember: each time you stop and turn the bike off, you have to turn your Cardo intercom off too, but leave Connected open. When you jump back on, let the phone talk to the TFT again, then turn your headset on. It's a mild pain, but keep doing that and everything should work very reliability for you. And if your intercom isn't talking to your friends, it's not config/TFT related, it's purely that one of you hasn't selected the right rider Group in the Cardo app itself. One is an Admin, the other a Member. Both must select the Groups you had when originally paired. Let me know if that all helps! :-D

Can we put WAZE on BMW TFT screen ?
@huwevans4452
@huwevans4452 4 года назад
That would be ideal for me too!
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 4 года назад
@@huwevans4452 I'd love that, because if you're just going A-B, then (Google owned) Waze is the best. In fact, once Waze supports multi-waypoint routes, 'all' GPS devices are dead! But no, the only bike with Apple CarPlay is the Goldwing.

Total numpty question with the Nav V also on the bike does the route not display in Navigator ? Or only on the TFT & Phone .
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 года назад
If you use the Connected phone app, it only works with the TFT's navigation system. The Garmin is standalone. So you could use both, and if one gets lost the other can keep you on course. Or one or the other. Personally, I prefer BMW's Connected app and it seems more reliable to me if using imported GPX files that were created with an OpenStreetMap (OSM) format. Just be sure to zoom in 100% on each and every waypoint when planning to ensure all are central in the road on the map. I hope that helps Des!
