Man I miss the days of arcade gaming so much. You could walk into a random store and find a game you haven't played before there's something to be said of the physical presence of the cabinet itself. I mean, finding a new game on youtube or steam is cool and all but the impact of seeing a new arcade game with the cabinet and everything, was just a more viscerally impacting experience.
@@Mike-nf6nf The atmosphere is lacking but I think it's because it's during daylight. The layout of the place looks rather dull. I remember this one local place in my home town called the Wheels Inn and wow...that arcade atmosphere was just awesome. When you step in it's like being at a place full of pure bliss with all the lighting and noise
Daytona USA absolutely stomped this game in the arcades both in gameplay and its sheer bombastic first impression with that attract mode soundtrack, but Ridge Racer always had the better home conversions. Probably why the series very quickly just moved over to home consoles while Daytona stayed in the arcades to this day.
@@knifeyboy82 3 Tracks instead of 1, 30 simultaneous racers, the most fun implementation of clutch kick drifting in any arcade racer ever? Yeah, sorry, Daytona USA reams Ridge Racer in terms of arcade gameplay. But the home conversion unfortunately ran at 20 fps and had a draw distance of nope.
The Arcade version of Ridge Racer had lines behind it. Ridge Racer needed constant maintenance from the abuse of getting the fastest lap times. Daytona had a dinky 4 speed dash shifter that immediately ruined the experience. Ridge Racer had several different styles of shifter going on, all located where they would be in a real car.
Old, but gold. No matter how much time goes by, this game has nice tracks and environment until nowdays. A job very well done indeed. From 1993 ad aeternum! Daytona USA is another eternal diamond. (Bruno)
@@somethingoriginal1707 Daytona's official release was in 1994. So it has an advantage over RR, which is really running on 1992 hardware. Again, it shouldn't matter because the System 22 and Model 2 were incredibly advanced for their time.
Man, it feels surreal to see this game at 4K. The game looks like this in my rose tinted memories of 1993. That said, these graphics were fucking astounding back then.
The only 4K part of it is the pixel count of this upload, though I think it's also for minimizing the video compression artifacts. By the looks of it, I'd say the actual resolution the game is being displayed at is more like 640x480 or 1024×768. Definitely there's no anti-aliasing going on, but then again, it'd be fair to assume that the arcade machine the game was run on in 1993, used a CRT screen that most likely smoothed out "the staircase effect" we can now see on modern screens.
@@gilotovlog8703 This game does run at 640x480. I think it would be cool to play this game in true 4K, but unfortunately, the official version of MAME will never support a feature like that.
Ahhh the memories, i remember playing this game on PS1 and beating the mysterious #13 car and when i do beat that car feels so good like you were the best in the world, those were the days.
Still one of my favourite racers to this day, I have a Rave Racer deluxe arcade machine but thinking of converting the game to ridge racer (the old soundtrack was way better).
To bad PS1 didn´t manage to make it so crisp as this.. Sony should talk to Namco and make these games available in the PS Store in arcade graphic style ,, just like Daytona USA
@@MegaFCKforever Yeahh, ALL of them...R4, R5 and Rage Racer (R3) hell yesss. Too bad so few truly appreciate this amazing series. Most don't get it. The dynamics and the feeling you get from RR games is unlike any other driving game I have played.
Back in the day in arcadehall, they had this and i always played it with my friends in the weekends. It took a lot of money from me/ learned to drive with this RR arcade cabinet ( manual shifting) but great times!
2:53-2:55 The logo was from the 1992 arcade game Fighter and Attacker that was also produced by Namco. Also, Rave War was the name of the third song from Fighter and Attacker, done by two composers who a year later would do the soundtracks for the Ridge Racer series(mostly the early ones). Not only were both the F/A and the Rave War logo made camoes that were tagged to the red car, but Rave War was also going to be the official title before the name Tekken was it's final option.
We had Ridge Racer and Datyona USA in the same arcade back then. I still preferred Daytona over this, simply because I could change views and see my car while racing.
They had one in the Trocadero in London up until about 2002 I think. The car was a red/dark orange Mazda MX5 if I'm not mistaken. Cost 5 quid to have a go though... absolute madness. And there was an attendant standing next to it at all times (to explain how it worked and, I imagine, to keep people from damaging the car)
Manual transmission, no other way. Let the clutch pedal slam from lifting your foot, swing that wheel. I think you can get that time down to 1.06. I'm old so I can't remember my absolute best... 25 years ago.
Daytona was way ahead of this game. The cars in this game look like they were made in MS Paint. Basic lettering etc. Daytona Usa's cars looked better and also there were more of them. The AI in Daytona is complex: it will adjust according to how you're playing. Three different unique tracks, each with their own look and feel. Realistic car behavior like the fact that if you crash into the wall your car will actually crash. and also the car will look beat-up afterwards.
We definitely need a 16:9 4K 60 FPS remaster for current consoles and wheel support. Last gen we got Daytona USA, bring that back, bring GTI Club, bring Sega Rally, and bring Ridge Racer.
I don’t know how much I spent money on this arcade lol my initials would be across the screen in my hood. If I would go to the next town and saw this arcade I’d go look for a challenger lol man good memories
This is one of the arcade games I want some day for my future man cave, but the problem is, Ridge Racer and other games I want like Pit-Fighter and Super Street Fighter II Turbo are impossible to find.
Does anyone know if the “view change button” to behind the car view, was ever implemented in the arcade version? (it’s not in MAME) though it is in rave racer..
@@10000viewer If you mean nostalgia by saying 'small club', then I believe it depends on what generation one belongs to, of which could be described as a 'club' or similar ideals and interests also.
@@spongepantssquarebobclorox5427 *sigh* there's always one that tries to pontificate and quantify someone else's feelings like it's a science or something. Listen, this is the game that when you walked into an arcade (something that absolutely IS lost on today's generation and would never understand) your eyes lit up and were immediately drawn to it. This is the game the launched what is now the powerhouse Playstation brand. When this was revealed to be a game that you could play in your home, then that was it, and that's history. So, he's absolutely correct when he says you have to be in a particular club i.e old enough, to understand the impact this game had then, and now.
@@steve_ire321 Ha ha, I meant the same term that you mentioned (I said nostalgia). I wasn't trying to demean anyone by no means. You must've misunderstood.
because this beautiful old race game with improved 3d graphics from 1993 is cheating you, the collisions are annoying your speed slow down also the AI can catch up with rubber banding effect i suffering of this but i love it
Put Lightning McQueen no. 95, Strip Weathers no. 43, Chick Hicks no. 86, Doc (The Fabulous Hudson Hornet no. 51) from Cars Xbox 360 video game and Cruz Ramirez, Jackson Storm, Junior Moon, Louise Nash and River Scott from Cars 3: Driven To Win in a video game series of Ridge Racer right away please? I want to see it on a 100% longplay video.
@@alphatrion100 Yeah, I just found it recently for $10 and always thought it'd suck for some reason....wow, it's ALMOST as good as RR4 and RRV. But yeah, it's definitely a terrific game! Glad I got it.
I’ve never seen this in an arcade but for 1993 the graphics are something else most of us had a Nintendo or Sega back then so this would have blown our minds 😂
This is the game that would of definitively changed the entire fate of Trip Hawkins Panasonic 3DO back in 1993. Both the 3DO and Ridge Racer were released the same year and Trip had access to this game a full 2 years before Sony even decided the name for their new system to come would be called the PlayStation. I've always been puzzled by the decisions that were made about which games the 3DO chose to showcase their new gaming system off to the public eyes that were closely watching them. It would appear that Trip Hawkins followed in the footsteps of what snk did when they released the Neo Geo AES home system in 1990 but unfortunately it was nowhere close to being as successful. If Panasonic would of had this game as a launch title pack in game then I really believe things would of been totally different. The main issue was going to be the system price in 1993. I remember going into EB Games and seeing the 3DO with a $800.00 price tag and I said WHAT!!!!! so loud I was kicked out of the store for emotionally disturbing the peace. It's just sad that Trip Hawkins wasn't able to see the greatness that was right in front of him in this game and he allowed Ridge Racer to slip past his fingertips to give the PlayStation all his glory that he could of had. It's a complete and total tragedy because the 3DO had a golden opportunity but didn't capitalize on it dooming themselves with a price tag that should have only been half of what they were asking for. It was very sad to see Trip's video game legacy end that way but at least it was better than the fate of the Atari Jaguar, I Promise You That!!!!!😮😳😲
When it went into the fluorescent lights tunnel, back in the mid-90s that absolutely registered in my mind as the most realistic transition in a video game lighting I had ever seen, it still, looks cool in 2023!
I hadn't used that Retroarch core, but I verified that the same issue shows up in MAME 0.136. MAME 2010 core is from MAME version 0.139, so it's pretty old. I would imagine that the regular MAME core wouldn't have that problem.
@@arronmunroe Yo, can you explain how you map the controls to a joypad??? There's SOOO MANY controls in the menu I have no clue what is what. I'm also using it on the Mac and when I get in, it drives automatically without me having to press on the gas.
@@CJTranceAddiction For the steering wheel, I would just press a direction on the joystick for "steering wheel analog", but not the ones called "inc or dec". On the other hand, for the gas pedal or brakes, I would suggest mapping a button to just "inc" for both of them while disabling the regular analog. The shoulder triggers on my controller usually have difficulty when set as analog the normal way, but you could set it differently if you're able to get it working. Keep in mind that setting it the way I suggest makes it so you can't partially hold down the brake or the accelerator.
@@arronmunroe This is so confusing, man...yeah I got the analog working on my PS3 controller but I have to press the analog stick up in order to drive forward. Basically the analog also acts as the gas pedal wtf??? Also, there's like P1 Pedal 1 Analog Inc and Paddle Analog Inc.....
