I continue north along the west coast of Australia to Broome, which turns in to a 1000km day, then I restock and reset to head back east for the first time on the journey.
she is a big Island so still some more long straight roads to go, but lots of spots to check in between the straight . I'll try and do something with the images, I haven't quite worked out what as yet.
I was up there with a mate just before they re-closed the Fitzroy River temporary crossing due to more water coming down. We were in one of the last groups across heading towards the NT, late in the day, before they decided to close it. The water was about a foot from going over. All the road works going on due to the wash outs shpwed nature is boss. Enjoying your videos and that boab was surrounded with cars and people when we went past. We had our own troubles in Broome, camping on the beach just north of town. On the way back out early the next morning we broke a CV joint on the front drive shaft. After getting to the tar road, we spent hours trying find the fault and then trying to isolate it. Due to the land cruiser having full time 4wd to the front wheels we ended having to call a towie to get us to the first caravan park. very busy. Luckily the next day the first parts shop we walked to had a spare that my mate changed fairly quickly and we were able to make the crossing that same day. We had to be in Darwin in two days and didn't want to get caught waiting for the river to drop, that is also why lots of people every where as the gibb was closed.
Well it's not an adventure until something goes wrong and it definitely sounds like you had one. Yes with the Gibbs closed it funnel everybody into the same area, but all was good and still a great experience. I hope you enjoyed the episode.
that do have a certain look don't they, someone commented they look like they have come straight out of an Indian Jones movie and I think they were right.
Yes, my fault, better planing next time or should I say I'll do some planning instead of winging it 😂. Yes there will be a lot of water for the bike to try and navigate in the next one.
Yes, most of the time when wild camping not and issue but definitely when staying near or in a town. I think the only reason I go a site in the Bungle Bungles was they just opened access to it after the heaving rain and lets just say trying to get in might have scared a few people off (you'll see in the next episode).

Hi Mark, I did a review of the bike after the last series and I'll do another review after this series is finished. But things I don know it has performed a lot better off road that I thought after going up those steep hill climbs in the Flinders Rangers. Also it is handling long milage days. no issues at all with it this far. I test its ability in water in the next episode. I really like the area near Denmark.
Enjoy mate....I did the 16 000km on a Push Bike in just over 5months !! Solo..unsupported !!!Last year half of Australia 8 821km... I know those long lonely roads.....
that's a massive effort, I am sure the roads would have been longer and lonelier for you, but what an epic way to see the country, I do like the slower travel, you just experience more.
the Dunlop 605D on the back about 6000km but that is an off road tyre, great in the dirt rocky lose ground etc all the harder bits. Surprisingly the Dunlop 605D gets about 16,000km. I now have a Heidenau K60-Scout on the back at present and it should do about 15,000km to 20,000km but I only got it on at Perth so it has a lot more left in it.
Well mate looks like nothing has changed in Broome. When I was there last year in August I had the same issue as you. NO ACCOMODATION anywhere. Ended up tenting at the back of a caravan park where they kept all their rubbish. They said "If you can find a spot use it" and still charged me lol. Yep lots of nothing to see up that way. Really enjoyed this episode. Took me back to my trip and reminded of how busy Broome gets for reasons I don’t fully understand. Sad to see Pardoo in such a parlours state despite my nasty comments about their generator!

The only thing I can think is that Broome being the largest town, it has all the supplies that you can't get at a service station and makes things a little easier after being on the road for day (especially the caravaners and campers with kids). I was actually not going to stop there but I didn't have enough oil to change the oil and it's rare to see motorcycle oil in a service station out here. Yes it is sand about Pardoo, and so unlucky to get a direct hit by a category 5 cyclone.
roads are really straight....they are to straight and paved....but, can cover a lot of ground quickly...keep up the good work, enjoy your coverage of a place I would love to see.
Another great video of your riding adventure…the one thing I love and I don’t know if there is a specific film term but I’m going to call it cutting it to the beat of the music when travelling down the road. I don’t know if it’s because I ride and am always listening for cadence. Any way I see your videos mostly as art. 😊 hope that made sense lol
Thank Indi, yes matching music to the edit helps it flow better your eyes and ears see and hear the change at the same time so it creates that rhythm or cadence. You can also use it the other way, if you're trying to make the viewer feel uncomfortable say in a fiction movie you can deliberately not have these match. It can be jarring and just doesn't feel right, so it a thriller just before something bad is about to happen this technique can be used.
Try and cut a small piece of conveyer belt to screw into bottom of footstand Joe. Has worked great for me in soft ground on the heavily loaded Africa Twin. A cheap fix.
Thanks for the tip mate. I had a larger foot that bolted on to the side stand foot, but when I was doing the very rocky hill climbs in the Flinders Rangers it got ripped off, so haven't had the chance to do anything about it, but I'll have a look at your idea when I get a chance.

Yes it is a unique part of the country although harsh it has its own beauty. I have past a few people on bicycle in the middle of no where, enjoying there adventure at there speed, you do take a lot more in.

It is great to hear you are enjoying the series around Australia. Malcolm Douglas was a real adventurer, with rough paper maps and a lot of bush skill and survival skill, he was a legend. To have only a tiny bit of his knowledge and his experiences would be incredible.
@@freewayproject yes. He was a real legend. Some time I'll visit this part of Australia. I'm afraid of spiders. That's the problem. Even the UK house spider scares me. 🙈
@@littlepuppy101 Well I have seem spiders bigger than my hand, but there not deadly, the Funnel-web spider, Trapdoor spiders, White-tailed spider and Redback spider amongst others are the ones to watch out for, I've been bitten by a redbacks a could of times, year you don't feel great after that happens.

Thanks Neil. Yes Port Hedland is 600km south, there is Derby but it is 220km away and also 40km off the main HWY and Kununurra is 1000km away, so unless you only need fuel and some bad service station food, you really have to stop there.

Got caught travelling out to Mt Isa in December 2020 (Summer HOT 44 Deg , pulling into a Servo at Julia Creek for some unleaded fuel, the bowsers had tripped out due to the intense heat, the attendant had to run a water hose over them to kool them off, still didn't help !
Always fun in the outback. I had that once at Pine Creek in the Northern Territory, we pulled into the servo but the heat had stopped it working due to it being so hot and turning into gas or something weird, lucky the other fuel station was covered a little better and could get some fuel out. They joys of the outback hey.

Good job! Those roads look a little boring? Even though the rain causes a bit of damage I assume it was welcome wet weather. Question- Did you feel safe at all time in the very remote parts of WA? Any towns /places you wanted to avaoid? Thx
Yes the long stretches can get boring but they do lead to the really good spots (like in the next episode). The wet season hits every year up there, they just have that cycle of it rain for a few months then it does rain for the rest of the year, so it would be all about managing there water up there. Yes I felt safe at all times, I had heard they did have issues at one stage of kids throwing rocks at cars and bike over the Fitzroy Crossing Bridge but that's gone now so I gather that is no longer an issue. Also if you don't actually stay in towns it would be even safer as there is no one out in the middle of nowhere.

Definitely, needing to be in town to pick up supplies and not thinking straight after 1000km day, lesson learn. I'll try not to make that mistake again.
Just curious to know why you were riding the midline either side of Pardoo and after? I've done that once in Queensland when both sides of the road were so carved up by trucks that it was safer to ride down the centre line, but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the road you were on. Fantastic cinematography as usual. Love the still of the boab.
I lived up this way..roads are very cambered for the wet season and chew your tyres out on the right hand side/heaps and heaps of animals from camels goats heaps of cows and kangaroos ,riding in the middle just feels safer ie a millisecond more reaction time and the road trains from all the mines do chop up the road…not sure if these are Joe’s reason but definitely mine .
Yes what @jktl1000s said, there was no traffic out there so sitting in the middle or the road gives you a slightly better chance to see any issues. Also anyone who has ridden out there will tell you the roads are very coarse in that region (as they have to last) so it chews through tyres.
From all the specs it looks like a better bike. I got my bike second hand as it is all I cold afford, so it might be some time before I can get a look at one.
What was the name of that app mate? I want to make sure I never use it! 🤣 Google maps is just about as bad, especially in Mexico. Serious question next..... What do you catch your oil in when you do a change? I have one coming up, and I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Not that I don't know how to do the service, it's doing it outside of a shop. In the past, when I had my own home and garage, I'd do a trip, come back, do the service. Now that I'm a nomad, doing the services in the wild is a question. I could be like Itchy Boots and pay for some random to do the service, but, I'm uncomfortable with that, if anybody is going to strip my drain plug, it will be me. 🙄
It was bookings . com but really it was user error by me 😂. I bought an "Oil Drain Pan" in Broome, they are about $5 the cheap plastic ones (if you look at the thumbnail of this episode or the images at the end you'll see it on the top of my gear), then I use empty plastic oil bottle the newel came in or ahold water bottles to pour the old oil in.
@@freewayproject I guess one from a dollar store would work...... 🤔 Tomorrow I'm going to pull my rear axle to check the lubrication, I've been getting a squeaking sound lately. If it needs some grease I'll do both ends. I have over 4,000 miles on it, so it might be due.

depending where I am it the fuel cost can vary from $1.60AUD - $2.25AUD (1.39CAD - $1.91CAD) main tank is 15L side tanks are 5L each so 25L in total. So cost varies between $40AUD - 56.25AUD ($34CAD - $48.76CAD) I get around 700km - 750km if I am just cruising (not pushing hard into an head wind or really hilly or rough tracks or sandy tracks)
The short answer, you aren't allow to free camp in or near towns (in this area) there were not camp specific sites either. This was the last place to get supplies (oil I needed to do an oil change on the bike) so had to be in the town. I had ridden about 1000km that day and was very tired so wasn't thinking clearly either, there were other options if I had planned ahead, but I hadn't planned anything the whole trips so why start now 😂

@freewayproject Because I ride a Harley, I've got custom-made silicon earplugs which cut out not only the engine noise (which isn't that bad), but also the wind noise (which can be really bad). I'd highly recommend getting some. But also, I think any 800-1000 km day leads to a spaced-out head anyway.
Australia loves a rule. there are areas you can free camp and areas you can't. you can not free camp anywhere near a town unless it is specifically stated but they are rare to find. which is the main issue I had as I was near towns at the end of the day and needing to get off the bike. Out on the open road most of the land near the main roads is private and is fenced off, camping between the fences and roads is only a few metres so very hard to get to sleep (I did it in the first episode of this series). That is why there are free places to camp (they have no camping facility just cleared ground further away from the main road). Different states have different rules NSW is the worst everything cost. I have the same issue with flying a drone, all the places that would be great to get incredible images is illegal like National Parks, if I didn't get caught doing it then posted the footage on here then I can get find just from showing it in the video so not worth it. So yes Australia loves a rule.
That would have been cool doing it back then, more of an adventure. I had to get oil for the bike (I needed to service and it was the last place I could for thousands of KM) so I thought I may as well going into town restock food as it is the only town in the area and after riding 1000km in the day and super tired I just wasn't thinking clearly I just focused on having to be there to get the stuff. You can't camp on the side of the HWY near town and also there has been issue camping on the side of the road in that area (once you hare past the city limits) with locals. Once you are 100km plus no issues. So just a combination of a few things, manly me being tired and not thinking straight. Lesson learnt.
@@freewayproject fair enough for sure. Don’t ride tired. Bloody hot too. I only rode in daylight I think doing about 400-500km a day from memory stopping before sunset. About off-road side camp, I get it. Probably unsafe these days. Will catch up on your previous vids keep them coming! 👍
Yes I was trying to avoid Broome but needed supplies I couldn't get anywhere for a few thousands of km, but next time I'll bush camp then ride in get the stuff then ride out again and bush cap again. Seem logical after the fact, not idea what I was thinking at the time.🤦🏼♂️
