Riding Australia's Oldest Commuter Train - V/Line H Set Trip to Bacchus Marsh

Join me as we take a ride onboard one of the oldest commuter trains in Australia. In this video we'll take a ride onboard V/Line's H Set carriages on an afternoon peak hour service from Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh. The carriages have their origins from the Harris electric multiple units which first entered service in 1956. Several carriages were rebuilt into H type carriages for use on regional services in the 1980's and included new interiors and air conditioning.
We ride these carriages behind N Class locomotive N455 on the 6:04pm service from Melbourne's Southern Cross Station to the peri-urban commuter town of Bacchus Marsh around 50km west of Melbourne along the Ballarat Line.
These carriages are now nudging on 70 years old and V/Line is in the process of phasing out the H Sets, with the last rumoured to be withdrawn in early February 2024. So what are these carriages like to ride on today?

Awesome video mate. I recently took a trip to melbourne and was able to catch a h set to Geelong. The seats were very comfortable but like you said in the video the carriages were very creaky and I noticed every time we passed another train the doors would get sucked out slightly then slamed back into the carriage. Overall I found it to be a very fascinating experience.

I just love these trains. I always have. So comfy. I especially liked the rare longer set or sets, I don't rememberhow many long sets there were. I only got to ride it a couple of times, but it was really cool. The only thing i didn't like was how the doors rattled when passing other trains.

That locomotive looks cool. Like a mix of a UK Class 58 and a SD40-2 mixed together.

For Bacchus Marsh services yes (although they ended coming back jan 2024 because of a Vlocity Shortage) but as of Yesterday the H sets ran their last services ever to Geelong and now ether the rest of the fleet is gonna be stored or scrapped.

I took the last rostered h set towards bacchus marsh on december 7 (it only ran towards melbourne on the 8th) shame that these trains wont be around for much longer
