Agree with your comments. I have been riding step on in niseko for many years without any issues. Had also a back country guided tour in snow shoes in deep pow with the step ons.
japow!!! i'm a 100% step-on guy now. did a trip to retallack b.c last year and they worked perfectly. not sure why all the haters. i have so much more energy at the end of the day without having to bend down or sit on my arse strapping in. our little secret i guess.
Im just about to but photon boots ans gen 1 step ins for £300 uk still with tags on, feel like im getting a bargain but just checking its worth it for gen 1?
not sure the difference in boots for each gen but the big thing for me was that i have a wide foot and i bought a wide version with then newer boots. i think the new bindings are the key and i believe the older boots work the same for the newer stepons. @@AndrewBartholomew-on4pn
I had the supermatics and I loved them until a release lever broke. It ended up being lucky since it was still under the 30 day return. So took them back and tried the burton step ons. So glad I did. I think the supermatics are going to be amazing in a few years but at the moment I think for my money the step ons win. Either way it’s a good time to be snowboarding. It’s always great to see the evolution of something I love so much. Great video and thanks for pointing out that a lot of the complaints people have with the Burton step ons are kinda universal for boarders regardless of step in, on, or strap in.
Two recommendations I would make is: 1) to use stomp pads by both bindings (even if you're riding directional, see #2) , 2) to use stomp pads with spikes (crab grab shark teeth for example) to help avoid snow getting into my binding bed to begin with. I almost never have issues clipping as I've gotten into the habit of using those spiky stomp pads to clean the bottom of my boots before trying to step in. I can do the whole lift my high-back, wipe binding bed, step-in, go in under a few seconds so it's easy to keep up with all my skier friends. I have been experimenting with the PowerRide inserts this season for stiffer/more support around the ankle on the step-on boots. They seem to stiffen up the boot quite well and makes my board even more responsive, and its seemed to help with my ankle pain as well. Might be worth looking into, especially for those who love to carve.
You hit the nail on the head. HIKES. I hike *a lot* here in CB, if you ride here, you're hiking. There is simply no competition for in/out speed of steps.
I have yr 2 steps and just got this yrs genesis steps. Work great. Have both steps and regular but the longer I have them the less i use the strap bindings.
Thanks for sharing! I really don't understand when people say that "You can't step in if you don't clean the snow", as if they don't clean snow off the footbed of regular bindings. From my own experience, if I don't clean snow off my Cartel, my ankle strap would not be centered on my boots once it's tight, because of the extra snow under my boots. And if there's too thick a layer under my boots, I would not even be able to strap the ankle strap in. That would bother me a lot, maybe it doesn't bother them?
You're right! If I have snow on the footbed of my strap binding, you better believe I'm brushing it off with my gloves. Everyone does this and it's normal with strap bindings and step ons.
Man I'm jealous, Japow is on my bucket list! I don't get why people still have issues with the step-ons, I mean they have been out for a few years now and many have made videos similar to yours on using them in powder. Although not my cup of tea because I prefer my boots to be a little looser than most but I definitely see the advantage of them and I have spoken to numerous people that like them. I'm a flow guy myself, they are great for living in the midwest do hot laps on my small hill.
I am for the step on but here is my experience. I tried them on a 8/10 stiff and wide board. Jones 163w. The step ons are too soft. I put regular strap bindings (stiff side) on the jones board and it unlocked it. Step ons on a medium to soft board were fantastic. 28 years of riding experience so it might just be my preference. I love the ease and response but moving around a stiff, wide and long stick…. Not the best. I bet some stiffer boots would be best.
Hey Mate, looks like a trip of a life time. I'm heading to Rusutsu in 2 weeks. Was your trip organised through a Snow travel company or did you organise guides when you got there? Can I ask where you were? Great video!
That’s awesome man, you’re going to love it! We went to Hirafu, Niseko Village, Rusutsu, Niseko Village, Hanazono, and Moiwa. We decided where to go based on weather conditions.
Sorry for the late reply. I loved it out there!! It was great in pow and all over the resort. Another guy that lives in Japan and was showing us around also owns a hometown hero. He wasn’t using it the week I was there, but he told me he loved it! That board is good everywhere!

I’ve heard the deep daze feels like it hooks into turns more with the channels, curious how you found it in the trees. I’m questioning if a 3d fish (which has a loose tail) would compare with the deep daze which has channels that might have more locked in feeling.
That’s pretty accurate. I loved it in the trees and in powder. Very easy to turn and just felt like I was surfing going through really deep snow. I didn’t like it as much when I went into bumpy, hard terrain because it didn’t absorb everything as much as my camber board, but that’s understandable because of the shape. For me, the first a couple of runs on it felt like it was harder to turn than my hometown hero, but I was wrong though. Just needed to do more laps on it to really start understanding it. It’s a cool board!
